SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Sometimes a “doubting Thomas” can do more for our faith than we might think.  Today’s Gospel shows us how Thomas came to believe that Jesus truly was risen, and how this faith led Him to acknowledge who Jesus is in these beautiful words: “My Lord and my God.”  This can inspire us to realize that through wrestling with doubt, a deeper faith is possible.  We need to be honest with ourselves.  If doubt is present, we admit it and then ask the Lord to help us in our struggle.  He will work through our doubts if we ask Him to.  And on this Divine Mercy Sunday, may we never doubt the great love and mercy He has for each of us!              Father David

FATHER DAVID’S SABBATICALA reminder that I will be on a sabbatical this summer from June 1 through August 7.  I will be staying at Saint Scholastica’s College in Duluth, and Father Jerry Dalseth will be taking the weekend Masses in both parishes.  He will also have the Tuesday evening Mass at Saint John’s and the Wednesday morning Mass at Holy Cross.  Father Bernie Kahlhamer will have the Thursday morning Mass at Holy Cross.  When I receive the phone number that will be in the student room where I’ll be staying, I will publish that in the Bulletin.    Father David

DIVINE MERCY SERVICE TODAYEveryone is invited to join us at Holy Cross today (Sunday) at 2:00 pm for our annual Divine Mercy Sunday service.  With a speaker, prayer, song and Adoration, this can be a wonderful experience of the Lord’s love and mercy for us all.  The Sacrament of Penance will also be offered at the end of the service.

FIRST COMMUNION PRACTICE AT HOLY CROSSNext Sunday our children from Holy Cross will be receiving their First Holy Communion.  Practice for this will be Friday, 6:00 pm at the church.  Parents, please note this and come to this important time with your child.  We ask the Lord to bring our children to a deep realization of Jesus’ love for them in this Sacrament of His Body and Blood!

Kids Say Such Sweet Things – Mom was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin (5) and Ryan (3).  The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake.  Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson.  “If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, ‘Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.’  Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, ‘Ryan, you be Jesus!’”

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – Someone gave me a Smile today: I tried my best to give it away to everyone I chanced to meet as I was going down the street.  But everyone that I could see would give my Smile right back to me.  When I got home, besides one Smile, I had enough to reach a mile. (P.S. This is my way of looking at Life and being able to do this with the help of Jesus in me).

Everyone get out this week and the rest of the Easter Season and share your SMILES with everyone you meet – you’ll be happier!!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today is the day of Easter Joy!  Let us be glad and rejoice in it!  These words are used by the Church to express her exultation in the resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ.  And we are meant to make these words our own as we come to this day which is the greatest feast of the entire year.  Despite the struggles that stay with us in this earthly journey, we believe that Jesus has conquered death and sin, and that one day we will share fully in the victory that He won by His death on the cross.  In the words of Saint Paul from the Holy Saturday Easter Vigil: “We were indeed buried with Him through baptism into death, so that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life.”                          Father David

MAY GOD BLESS YOU THIS EASTER!To every parishioner, and to your family members and loved ones, may God bless each of you with His joy and peace as we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ!  And may our faith and trust in Him continue to grow, especially during these 50 days of the Easter Season.                 Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today we begin the most sacred, solemn week of the Church Year.  This Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord starts with an exultant entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem, with people waving palm branches as they acclaim Him.  Very quickly, however, the scene changes into one of betrayal, capture and the way of the cross.  As we meditate on what Jesus chose to let happen to Him, may we realize again that He suffered and died out of love for each one of us.  This Holy Week marks His final steps on earth, a journey leading to a glorious resurrection that brings hope to the entire world.                       Father David

FROM GRACE’S CORNER:             EMAIL: [email protected]                           PHONE NUMBER:  277-3832

Let’s finish with the Stations:  13TH STATION – THE BODY OF JESUS IS TAKEN DOWN FROM THE CROSSAs adults, we seem to be kinder when someone dies.  If only we could learn to see the good things about them while they were alive.  If only we would tell those around us how much we love them, while we still have the opportunity to do so.  14TH STATION – JESUS IS LAID IN THE TOMBAs adults, we can be selfish too.  We can accumulate things and keep them for ourselves.  We try to make sure we have what we want before we share what we have with anybody else.  (Let’s end with the Act of Contrition to Jesus)…O my God, my Redeemer, behold me here at Thy feet.  From the bottom of my heart I am sorry for all my sins, because by them I have offended Thee, Who art infinitely good.  I will die rather than offend thee again.  Amen.

THOUGHT FOR HOLY WEEK – So spend some time today looking closely at a crucifix.  See there the consequences of your sin – and the sins of everyone in all of history.  See the One who took the consequences upon Himself.  See Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God, willingly embracing the fate that should have been yours.  Keep looking.  See on that cross the perfect definition of love.  Jesus said that the greatest love is “to lay down one’s life for one’s friends”.  Let His love for you – His personal, warm love for you – melt your heart.  Let His compassion for you – His willingness to suffer for you – move you to offer Him your life, your will, and your plans.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

The words of Jesus in today’s Gospel are meant for us as well: “Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies it produces much fruit.”  During Lent we’re asked to make a special effort to “die to ourselves,” to confess our sins and turn away from those actions and attitudes that separate us from the Lord and from each other.  As we look forward to the beginning of Holy Week next Sunday, may God’s love and grace help us to be renewed in our quest for holiness.

FROM GRACE’S CORNER:                             EMAIL: [email protected]                                   PHONE NUMBER:  277-3832

Let’s continue on with the Stations:  10TH STATION – JESUS IS STRIPPED OF HIS GARMENTS:  As adults, sometimes we repeat stories that are disrespectful of others.  We can entertain thoughts that are not clean.  Sometimes we give the young people a bad example to follow.  11TH STATION – JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS:  As adults, sometimes we discriminate against others.  Even without thinking, we judge others because of their color, intelligence, income level or name.  We forget that we are to live as a brother or sister to all people.  Sometimes we use harsh words when we speak to our children and family members.  We can find it easy to look for something that isn’t very important and make it very important.  12TH STATION – JESUS DIES ON THE CROSS:  As adults, let us take a few moments to consider Your Love for us.  Help us thank you for Your willingness to go to your death for us.  Help us express our love for You!

THOUGHT FOR THE FIFTH WEEK OF LENT – Try this experiment the next time you are at Mass.  As you are praying and listening to the readings, quiet your heart, and pay attention to whatever comes into your mind.  If you get a sense of God’s love or if you feel peace welling up in you, accept it as a moment of grace. If you sense a new calling – to serve someone in need or to help your neighbor out, recognize that it is most likely a grace-filled invitation from the Lord.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life.” These words of Jesus, from John 3:16, capture the heart of what we believe in our Catholic faith.  Sometimes called “the Gospel in miniature,” this verse assures us of God’s love for everyone that He has created.  However, the challenge is also there for each person to “believe” in Jesus.  And believing means not only an intellectual assent.  It also means a heart/life giving over to the One that is believed in.                Father David

FROM GRACE’S CORNER:                             EMAIL: [email protected]                                   PHONE NUMBER: 277-3832

Let’s continue on with the Stations:  7TH STATION – JESUS FALLS THE SECOND TIME:  As adults, sometimes we think we should know more than we do.  We become impatient with ourselves and find it hard to believe in ourselves when we fail.  It is easy to despair over small things, and sometimes we do.  8TH STATION – JESUS MEETS THE WOMEN OF JERUSALEM:  As adults, sometimes we act like a child, we become so absorbed in ourselves and what we would like that we forget about the needs of others.  We take them for granted, and often ignore their needs.  9TH STATION – JESUS FALLS A THIRD TIME:  As adults, we often feel we should have conquered our weaknesses by now.  We become discouraged when we are confronted by the same problems over and over again.  Sometimes we get weary.  When we have health problems, we can become discouraged and depressed. (Food for Thought during Lent).

THOUGHT FOR THE FOURTH WEEK OF LENT – So today in Prayer, try to make a list of all the different ways God has been involved in your life.  Think first about the truths of the faith: He created you, and He redeemed you.  But think also about the ways He has shown Himself to you personally.  Write them down, and post them someplace prominent.  Your Father loves you deeply!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

All Catholics and other Christians learned about the Ten Commandments from their early years on.  Today’s First Reading gives us these, spelled out in greater detail than what we memorized when we were young.  They have always been a rock-solid foundation on which our actions are based.  During this time of Lent, when—hopefully—we plan to receive the Sacrament of Penance, probably the best Examination of Conscience would be carefully go through these Ten Commandments.  They describe so well what it means to love God above all and to love our neighbor as ourselves.                          Father David

FROM GRACE’S CORNER:                             EMAIL: [email protected]                                   PHONE NUMBER: 277-3832

Let’s continue on with the Stations:  5TH STATION – SIMON OF CYRENE HELPS JESUS CARRY HIS CROSS:  As adults, sometimes we try to do as little as we can and still get by.  Others might need our help, but we ignore their needs.  Even when we are asked to help, we sometimes claim to be too busy.  6TH STATION – VERONICA WIPES THE FACE OF JESUS:  As adults, we notice the needs around us.  Sometimes our own family members crave our attention, and we don’t even seem to notice.  Sometimes a co-worker, friend or family member could use help or understanding, but we don’t reach out to help lest we be criticized, or that they demand more of us than we would like to give.   (Please think about each Station of the Cross as adults of what we could do during Lent, and add on).

THOUGHT FOR THE THIRD WEEK OF LENT – So today open your heart to Jesus.  Sit quietly with Jesus in prayer, and ponder a short Scripture passage, perhaps something from Mass that has touched your heart.  Remember, Jesus will do the rest!  Good Luck!

THANK YOU to all our Parents who so willingly volunteer to take the task on of helping their child with their prayers that they should know when they make their 1st Holy Communion. You’re doing a great Job with your child - I can’t do it by myself!       Gr. Gracie

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Each year on the 2nd Sunday of Lent, we hear about the Transfiguration of Jesus up on the mountain.  Perhaps a basic lesson we receive from this is that we catch “glimpses” of the glory that belongs to Jesus, and which is awaiting us in eternal life.  This time of earth often enough is a period of trial and struggle.  By revealing His glory to His disciples, Jesus also assure us that we will someday share in that beautiful joy and peace that is now His with the Father and all the saints in heaven.                             Father David

FROM GRACE’S CORNER:                             EMAIL: [email protected]                                   PHONE NUMBER: 277-3832

Let’s continue on with the Stations:  3RD STATION – JESUS FALLS THE FIRST TIME: As an adult, we sometimes put things off.  We give up too easily and sometimes don’t do our work as well as we know we can.  4TH STATION – JESUS MEETS HIS MOTHER: As an adult, we sometimes feel overwhelmed by many things.  Life is so competitive, and we worry so much about our future and those who have some control over it.  We need to remember that being an adult does not mean having to solve every problem all by ourselves.  We need to look around us for a friendly face, for the help we need.

A DAILY PRAYER FOR LENT – Lord Jesus, help us take up our cross daily and follow in Your footsteps, especially during this time of Lent.  Turn our hearts to You so that we may love You above all else and our neighbor as ourselves.  Amen.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

As we begin this sacred season of Lent, the Gospel gives us a simple picture of Jesus and His 40 days in the desert.  We know that He was tempted by Satan and that angels ministered to Him.  We too face temptations toward sin: from Satan, from our own weakness, and from the world around us.  May we live these days wisely, striving to turn away from sin through prayer, penance and alms-giving (charity).  And may the Lord bless our efforts and renew our faith and trust in Him.       Father David

SPECIAL THANKSTo everyone who gave prayer, Mass offerings or other gifts toward my Mom’s funeral, and to those who attended the wake or the Mass, a heartfelt Thank You from myself and my siblings.  Also, for the plant and the flower given by our two parishes, our sincere gratitude.  May God bless you all for your concern and generosity!           Father David

LENTEN REGULATIONSFor Catholics, the Season of Lent asks the following acts of penance:  fasting—less than two full meals—on Good Friday for those ages 18-59; abstinence—no meat—on Fridays for those ages 14 and over (children ages 7-13 are highly encouraged to also follow this discipline).

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION WEDNESDAYWe congratulate our young adults from both parishes who will be confirmed this Wednesday at Saint Joseph’s in Pierz.  May God bless you with a deeper reception of His Holy Spirit into your lives, and may your future be marked by service and involvement in the Church.  We thank you for your witness to all of us of the importance of Jesus Christ in your lives!

FROM GRACE’S CORNER:                             EMAIL: [email protected]                   PHONE NUMBER: 277-3832

Something to think about for the Stations:  1st Station – Jesus Is Condemned To Death: As an adult, sometimes we feel abandoned and afraid as well.  Sometimes we too, feel like we are treated unfairly or blamed for things unfairly.  We have a hard time when people criticize us at home or work.  2nd Station – Jesus Carries His CrossAs an adult, we sometimes feel like were not appreciated.  Sometimes we feel as if we accept more responsibility that we need to.  We can feel sorry for ourselves, even though the crosses others carry are much larger than our own.  In our self-pity, we don’t reach out to help. O Jesus, our adorable Savior, we seek Your forgiveness and mercy for ourselves and for our loved ones. Give us the grace to enter more deeply into the mystery of Your Cross, so that sharing in Your suffering and death, we may experience a deep sorrow for our sins and be ready to embrace willingly, even with joy, all the sufferings and humiliations of this life and pilgrimage.

Amen.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Two verses from our Scripture readings today provide us with solid direction for our lives.  The Gospel speaks of a leper coming to Jesus, begging to be made clean.  And then the words, “Moved with pity, He stretched out His hand, touched Him…..”  The compassion of Jesus needs to be our compassion, especially for those suffering in any way.  And then St. Paul, writing to the Corinthians, says, “……whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.”  These few words give us the basic foundation that can guide all our actions and all the words we speak.     Father David

ADORATION AT SAINT JOHN’SOur monthly Adoration time at Saint John’s will be this Tuesday, 4:30 – 10:30 pm.  There is a sign-up sheet in the entry.  This would be a wonderful way to prepare for the Season of Lent which begins the following day.

ASH WEDNESDAY……THE BEGINNING OF LENTThis Wednesday we enter that annual time of the Church’s spiritual renewal, the Season of Lent.  The Lord calls us to look within, to become more conscious of where sin has taken root in our lives.  But He also points us toward that most holy week of the year, the days preceding Easter.  Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting—less than two full meals for those of ages 18 through 59.  It is also a day of abstinence, meaning no meat for those of ages 14 and above.  Mass times will be 5:00 pm at Holy Cross and 8:00 pm at Saint John’s.

SACRAMENT OF PENANCEThe Lenten Season is a prime time for receiving the Sacrament of Penance, especially if one has not done so for some time.  This is a wonderful way to not only experience God’s forgiveness, but also to receive the strength and healing that is needed in our lives.

SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATIONThe young adults from our four-parish area, as well as some nearby parishes, will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation on Wednesday, February 25th, at 7:00 pm in Saint Joseph’s Church in Pierz.  Please pray for them, that their openness to a deeper receiving of the Holy Spirit will prepare them for a full life of faith and charity in our Catholic Church.

LETTER TO ALL PARISHIONERS EXPLAINING ASSESSMENT SITUATIONSEach registered household in both parishes will soon be receiving a letter from Father David and the Trustees which details the current challenge we face regarding financial support for Holy Trinity School and Father Pierz School of Religion.  Please take time to read this.  It will help all of us to become more aware of how both of these corporations provide so much for our children’s growth in faith, and will also explain the financial situation that we now face.  Please keep all of this in your prayer, and also prayerfully consider how you can help both of these wonderful organizations to continue their crucial work of educating our children in their Catholic faith.

SCRIPTURE READINGS THIS WEEKToday: Leviticus 13:1-2,44-46; 1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1; Mark 1:40-45.  Ash Wednesday: Joel 2:12-18; 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:2; Matthew 6:1-6,16-18.  Next Sunday: Genesis 9:8-15; 1 Peter 3:18-22; Mark 1:12-15.

TAIZE’ PRAYER WITH THE CROSIERSYou are invited to join the Crosier Fathers and Brothers this Lenten Season for Taize’ prayer at the Cathedral of Saint Mary in Saint Cloud.  Times will be on Fridays, February 20 & 27, March 6, 13 and 20, beginning at 7:00 pm, lasting about an hour.  Taize’ prayer is a contemplative time of prayer around the cross, including a ritual blessing with the relic of Saint Odilia.

NO BETTER WAY…FASTING, ALMSGIVING, AND PRAYER – These three traditional Lenten practices strengthen us for our Lenten Journey.  So let’s all commit ourselves to these three vital spiritual practices this Lent.  Remember, it matters less how we pray or what we give up or what we give away.  It matters more that we take up these practices in a way that will help us all come closer to the Lord (maybe one way would be by attending daily Masses during Lent, maybe reading the Bible like fifteen minutes a day or saying the Rosary to our Blessed Mother).  If we can just try to do the best we can in each area, we can be sure that God will bless us beyond our expectations.  **God wants to give all of us breakthroughs as we pray, fast, and give alms this Lent.

THOUGHT FOR LENT – Try to stop a few times each day, and check where you are placing your heart, time and attention.  You may be battling traffic, or dealing with kids, but take a moment to realign your heart with God.  Imprint yourself back to Him.  God is in charge of us, and if we follow Him, He will safely lead us wherever He wants us to go.  *HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY – FROM MY HEART TO YOUR HEART!  *Why not light one candle in someone’s life today and each day after!  God Bless Each One of You!!
