SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

“His heart was moved with pity for them.”  These words describe the reaction of Jesus when He saw a large crowd of people waiting for Him and His disciples.  And these same words describe how He sees each one of us, especially when we are burdened with sin, fear or other difficulties that make life a struggle.  May we have the kind of trust in Him and His help for us that is portrayed in today’s Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 23):  “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want…..even though I walk in the dark valley, I fear no evil; for you are at my side……”                 Father David

SCRIPTURE READINGS THIS WEEKToday: Jeremiah 23:1-6; Ephesians 2:13-18; Mark 6:30-34.  Next Sunday: 2 Kings 4:42-44; Ephesians 4:1-6; John 6:1-15.

NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING AWARENESS WEEKJuly 19-26 is designated “Natural Family Planning Awareness Week” in the Church.  This is an important time to review why Natural Family Planning (NFP) is so important in our Catholic teaching, and how it serves a crucial purpose in a culture that often seems to have little regard for God’s design for marriage and family.  NFP uses knowledge of the natural rhythms present in a woman’s body to enable a couple to delay or plan the occurrence of pregnancy.  It takes a commitment on the part of husband and wife to learn this method, but countless couples testify to the beauty and holiness that NFP can bring to a marriage.  There are a large number of certified NFP instructors in our diocese, some in and around the Little Falls area.  Call the Office of Marriage and Family at (320)252-4721, and they will direct you to who are committed to NFP and will not recommend artificial contraception or other immoral/questionable methods of birth control.

FRANCISCAN POOR CLARESOur reflections on the religious communities in our diocese during this “Year of Consecrated Life” take us to the wonderful presence of the Franciscan Poor Clare Nuns in Sauk Rapids.  Most, if not all Catholics, probably have either had the experience of asking for their prayers, or of knowing others who have turned to these sisters for prayer.  Their special calling, since the time of their founding by St. Francis and St. Clare of Assisi in the 13th century, has been to live in poverty, mutual love and enclosure.  In their own words: “Living in enclosure invites us to live simply.  This removes the inner pressures of hearing or knowing all the happenings and events prevalent in today’s world, and make it possible to live simply, fostering a spirit of inner stillness…..resulting in intercessory prayer for the world and its needs.”  These sisters give a powerful counter-cultural witness of not owning, but merely using the things of this world, simply and plainly.  For them, it results in a freedom that few of us are able to experience in our often-hurried and cluttered lives.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Faith is a mysterious thing.  We speak much about it, we know that we need it, yet it can be difficult to define.  In general, we speak of it as believing in God and putting our trust in Him for what we need.  Yet, it’s more than this.  Jesus’ own words and His examples in the Gospel show us that faith has a power, that it can “move mountains,” as He told His disciples.  On the other hand, lack of faith not only depletes our lives, it even seems to “hinder” God’s working in us.  Today’s Gospel speaks of Jesus’ amazement at the lack of faith in His own hometown people, even to the point where “He was not able to perform any mighty deed there.”  May we ask the Lord often to increase this gift of faith within us, so that our lives may become what He desires them to be.             Father David

THE DEFINITION OF MARRIAGEDespite the Supreme Court ruling the other week, the Church will continue to define the identity of marriage as consisting of a life-long union between one man and one woman.  This is so necessary if we are to see this reality as not only a societal institution, but also as a sacrament…..a sacred bond between God and those who are married.  Continue to pray that the truth of marriage will become the conviction of more and more people.

SCRIPTURE READINGS THIS WEEKToday: Ezekiel 2:2-5; 2 Corinthians 12:7-10; Mark 6:1-6.  Next Sunday: Amos 7:12-15; Ephesians 1:3-14; Mark 6:7-13.

ST. JOHN’S ABBEY IN COLLEGEVILLEOur ongoing look at the various religious communities in our diocese takes us today to the Benedictine priests and brothers at St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville.  Their history here goes back to 1856 when three priests and two brothers answered the call of Bishop Joseph Cretin of St. Paul to bring the sacraments and Catholic teaching to the immigrant settlements of central Minnesota.  The heart of their community life is based on work and prayer, following the Rule of St. Benedict, with outreach to nearby parishes and many other activities that provide opportunities for faith development.  St. John’s also places a strong emphasis on education, operating the prep school, the college and the School of Theology-Seminary.

FROM GRACE’S CORNER:                             EMAIL: [email protected]                           PHONE NUMBER: 277-3832

OUR FLAG – Do you get a feeling of pride, when you see our Flag.  Do you react with anger when it is burned like a rag.  Do you stand at attention, when our Flag goes by, especially when you see it on a coffin, is there a tear in your eye.  To some it’s just a piece of cloth, but to most it means much more.  It’s a symbol of all that’s great, as it flies over freedoms door.  If you love it, than defend it and never let anyone tear it down, as long as our Flag is flying, our freedoms will be sound.  America is a great nation, and our Flag will forever wave, over this Land of the Free, because of the Brave.

PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS – Lord, hold our troops in Your loving hands.  Protect them as they protect us.  Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need, and please bring them home safely.  May their sacrifices bring about a lasting and just peace in those lands.  I ask this in the Name of Jesus, Our Lord and Savior.  Amen.  (Thanks for Serving!!)

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

In one sentence (today’s 2nd Reading), St. Paul challenges us on how we are to live our life here on earth.  He says, “He indeed died for all, so that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for Him who for their sake died and was raised.”  If every human being would ask themselves, “What am I really living for?”……would this make a marked difference in our world?  And to put it more clearly, the question is, “Who am I living for?”  An honest answer to that has the power to change one’s life.      Fr. David

PARISH CLUSTER MISSION IN JANUARY – A reminder that on January 17-20 Deacon Ralph Poyo, who has a nation-wide ministry of evangelization, will be leading a time of mission for our four area parishes.  Please plan ahead to attend the evening sessions that take place from 7:00-9:00 pm.  And a note: we are working on the possibility of having each parish be the host for one of the evenings.  This will depend on what works out best for Deacon Ralph.  Otherwise, we are looking at Saint Joseph’s in Pierz being the host parish during the four evenings.

IF YOU’RE UNABLE TO ATTEND MASS – If you’re not able to come to Mass, please let us know if we can bring the Eucharist to you.  While Father David is away (until August 7), please contact Lonna Becker at 468-6244 or Grace Dembouski at 277-3832, and they will contact a Communion Minister for you.  You can also call Father David in Duluth at (218)723-6133, although that phone does not have an answering tape in it.  Father Jerry Dalseth would also help with this when he is able.  His phone is (320)250-3686.

SCRIPTURE READINGS THIS WEEKToday: Job 38:1,8-11; 2 Corinthians 5:14-17; Mark 4:35-41.  Next Sunday: Wisdom 1:13-15, 2:23-24; 2 Corinthians 8:7,9,13-15; Mark 5:21-43.

OUR CROSIER COMMUNITY IN ONAMIAAs we mark the Year of Consecrated Life from November 2014 through February 2016, we thank God for the wonderful presence of the Crosier Priests and Brothers in Onamia.  These religious first arrived in the little town of Butler, MN in 1910, and in 1922 established their Crosier Priory in Onamia, the first in the U.S.  At present there are 31 members living at the priory, including four men in initial formation.  The Crosiers follow the Rule of St. Augustine, with a rich community life of prayer, liturgy and ministry to others, including the parishes of Onamia, Hillman, Wahkon and Vineland.  Since 1952 they have hosted the National Shrine of St. Odilia—patroness of the blind and afflicted, and patron saint of the Crosier Order—in their priory church.  We also note that Father Greg Poser from the order is a Lastrup native.  May the Lord bless this community with guidance, peace and many vocations!

PLEASE PRAY FOR THE ARCHDIOCESEYou may have heard by now of the resignation of Bishop John Nienstedt and Auxiliary Bishop Lee Piche from the Archdiocese of Minneapolis/St. Paul.  It has been a very difficult time for that diocese with the ongoing situation of the Clergy Abuse revelations over the years.  Please keep the Archdiocese, their leaders and Catholic faithful in your prayers.

PRAYER FOR OUR FATHERS – God Our Father, we give you thanks and praise for our fathers young and old.  We pray for young fathers, newly embracing their vocation; May they find the courage and perseverance to balance work, family and faith in joy and sacrifice.  We pray for our own fathers, who have supported and challenged us; May they continue to lead in strong and gentle ways.  We remember fathers around the world whose children are lost or suffering: May they know that the God of compassion walks with them in their sorrow.  We pray for men who are not fathers, but still mentor and guide us with fatherly love and advice. We remember fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers who are no longer with us, but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love.  Amen.  (A VERY HAPPY AND BLESSED FATHER’S AND GRANDFATHER’S DAY – THANKS!)

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Jesus often told parables to teach His listeners (including us) about God and His kingdom.  Today’s Gospel brings us two of these stories, both of them using the image of seed planted in the earth.  The lessons we learn are two: first, that we need patience with ourselves and trust in God as we grow in our faith; second, that from even a small beginning of faith can come a great result.  May we often ask the Lord to strengthen that gift of faith that He planted within us in Baptism.  And may we always be people of prayer which provides the nourishment for that small seed to grow.                       Father David

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THIS WEEKToday: Exodus 17:22-24; 2 Corinthians 5:6-10; Mark 4:26-34.  Next Sunday: Job 38:1,8-11; 2 Corinthians 5:14-17; Mark 4:35-41.

YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFEAs we have heard, Pope Francis has designated November, 2014—February, 2016 as the “Year of Consecrated Life.”  This effort is to make all of us more aware of the many wonderful religious congregations that serve the Church and the world.  In our Diocese of Saint Cloud we are blessed to have six of these orders with us: the Crosier Community of Onamia, the Franciscan Sisters of Little Falls, Saint John’s Abbey in Collegeville, the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict in Saint Joseph, the Franciscan Poor Clare Nuns in Sauk Rapids, and the Vincentian Congregation from India which has several priests now serving in our diocese.  In the following weeks we will be taking a closer look at each of these orders which will help us to appreciate the dedicated service that they bring to us.

OUR FLAY IS SACRED TO US ON THIS FLAG DAY, JUNE 14, 2015.  Today is a chance to renew our Pledge of Allegiance and Devotion to our Country, and an opportunity to offer a Prayer that the Stars and Stripes may truly wave forever, over the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.  May our leaders be blessed with wisdom and humility as they serve.  May our citizens also be blessed with wisdom, and gratitude, and the courage to stand united “Under God”.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – We are proud of our Country, and even though she is not perfect, she is the best that there is.  Long may she stand as a Beacon of Lights to all.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today’s Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity brings us the knowledge that God is a trinity of Persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Our human minds can only go so far in grasping this, and if not for the revelation Jesus gave, we would not be able to know this mystery to the extent that we do.  It stands to reason that God is much more than we are, and that His very being is so much more than ours.  But this also tells us the His love and care are far beyond what we can give or even imagine.  How blessed we are to have our Creator so close to us, and to be so loving and forgiving of our human weakness!           Father David

FATHER DAVID’S SABBATICAL BEGINS MONDAYI will be moving up to Saint Scholastica’s in Duluth tomorrow (Monday), and staying there until August 7.  I ask your prayers, and will certainly continue to pray for all of you.  To note: my phone number at Student Housing at Saint Scholastica’s is (218)723-6226.  Please welcome Father Jerry Dalseth for the weekend Masses here, as well as the Masses on Tuesday and Wednesday.  And also welcome Father Bernie Kahlhamer as he takes the Thursday Mass.  Please note: Father Kahlhamer is on retreat the week of June 7th, so there will not be Mass at Holy Cross on Thursday, June 11th.  Also, note that there will be no Mass for Independence Day, July 4th (the morning).  And……any effort that anyone could make to attend the weekday Masses in our parishes would certainly be very appreciated by our visiting priests.  Thanks!          Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today’s Feast of Pentecost marks the coming of the Holy Spirit to Jesus’ disciples.  Our first reading (Acts of the Apostles) describes the dramatic effect that the Spirit produced, enabling them to speak in different tongues and to proclaim God’s mighty works.  And we know from further reading that these disciples were transformed into courageous, convicted witnesses to Jesus and His resurrection.  This same Spirit has been given to us in Baptism and, more deeply, in Confirmation.  May we ask the Lord often to bring us alive in His Spirit, and—as we come to the end of the Easter Season—to be witnesses to Him of His presence and His love.

                                                                                                                                                                                                Father David

SABBATICAL NOTEA reminder that I will be leaving June 1 for my sabbatical at Saint Scholastica’s College in Duluth.  If any parishioner did not get the information sheet stapled to last week’s Bulletin, let me know at 468-2111.  Also, an encouragement to those who are able to do so: please think about coming to one or more of the daily Masses this summer.  I’m sure this would help Father Dalseth and Father Kahlhamer to feel welcome as they take my place during my sabbatical. Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

We celebrate today the Ascension of the Lord.  This marks the end of Jesus’ visible appearance on earth, but also is the doorway that leads to His sending the Holy Spirit.  That great event we will mark next Sunday on the Feast of Pentecost.  Jesus had told His disciples that it was “necessary” that He return to His Father.  In the mystery of god’s plan, this was the way that the Holy Spirit would come to the disciples, transforming them into bold witnesses of Jesus and His resurrection.  May we also turn to prayer as they did, asking God to empower us with that gift of His own Spirit.           Father David

SABBATICAL ATTACHMENT SHEETPlease note the attachment to today’s Bulletin.  This lists the basic information that I hope will be helpful during my sabbatical from June 1 through August 7.  And just an added note: it would be wonderful if parishioners who are able would come to daily Mass, especially this summer when Father Jerry Dalseth and Father Bernie Kahlhamer are here.  I’m sure they would feel encouraged in their efforts to help us while I’m gone.                         Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

The love that God has for us is often spelled out in Sacred Scripture.  Jesus speaks today, “As the Father loves me, so I also love you.  Remain in my love.”  These words can easily affect our minds only and not become an inner experience and conviction.  It takes prayer and reflection to sense this love truly within us, where Christ dwells.  And it also takes a reaching out to others with this same love.  If I want the Lord to be a deep part of my life, then I need to love others as I have been loved by Him.          Father David

SOME CHANGES DURING FATHER DAVID’S SABBATICALPlease note that while I’m gone from June 1 through August 7, the following events will be affected: 1) no Adoration in June or July in either parish; 2) our young people not having the readings, etc., at Saint John’s for the months of June, July and August; 3) no Mass on July 4th.

REGARDING THE SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSIONMany of us still remember when the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord was on the Thursday after the 6th Sunday of Easter.  That has now been transferred to the following Sunday, which this year is May 17th.  So, this Thursday is not a Holy Day of Obligation in our diocese, or in most dioceses.

A MOTHER’S DAY PRAYERMay God bless all of our Mother’s who spread their love, sharing their hope and wisdom, nurturing each one of us through our lives.  May God bless all the Mother’s who have worked tirelessly praying and providing for us anything it takes to give us a better life.  May God bless all of the Mother’s on this Mother’s Day and every day for her blessings she shares each day of the year.  Amen.  (May God Bless all the Mother’s on this Mother’s Day, they sure deserve a day like this!)

WHAT IS A MOTHER?  It takes a Mother’s Love to make a house a home, a place to be remembered, no matter where we roam.  It takes a Mother’s Patience, to bring a child up right, and her Courage and her Cheerfulness to make a dark day bright.  It takes a Mother’s Thoughtfulness to mend the heart’s deep “hurts” and her Skill and her Endurance to mend little socks and shirts.  It takes a Mother’s Kindness to forgive us when we err, to sympathize in trouble and bow her head in prayer.  It takes a Mother’s Wisdom to recognize our needs and to give us reassurance by her loving words and deeds.  It takes a Mother’s Endless Faith, her Confidence and Trust to guid us through the pitfalls of selfishness and trust.  And that is why in all the World there could not be another who could fulfill God’s purpose as completely as a MOTHER!  (How true this all is of a Mother!)

MOTHER—SUCH A SIMPLE WORD – And, yet there is no doubt , six simple little letters spell what love is about.  Also, the word “special” means we are “special” in our own ways, each one of us has a personality that Jesus loves, because of who we are!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

One of the most beautiful images we have of Jesus is that of the Good Shepherd.  Today’s Gospel brings us this comforting reality, that Jesus—as our Shepherd—will even lay down His life to protect and sustain us.  As we continue to celebrate His resurrection, may we also pray that our trust in Him will be strong.  Like the sheep of His flock, may we follow where He leads, believing He will nourish and guide us into everlasting life.                             Father David

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – Would you like to see heaven touching earth?  Then say Yes and stand up.  It doesn’t matter how many times, or how hard, you’ve fallen in the past.  This is a season of breakthrough!  Every day, spend time with Jesus.  Ask Him to fill you with love until your cup runs over.  And practice walking through the natural peaks, plains, and valleys of your day close to His side.  Then you’ll surely dance when you see Him using your life to usher in His kingdom.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

We continue to hear about the appearances that Jesus made to His disciples after His resurrection.  Today’s Gospel shows Him assuring them in various ways that it is truly Him that they are seeing, and that He truly has risen from the dead.  Our Easter Season is about placing faith in Him, and in the fact that He has conquered death and sin by His resurrection.  We may not see Him face to face, but we can experience His presence and His love in the depths of our hearts.  May He continue to deepen our faith, and may we continue to seek Him in all that we do during our time on earth.                     Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

We continue to hear about the appearances that Jesus made to His disciples after His resurrection.  Today’s Gospel shows Him assuring them in various ways that it is truly Him that they are seeing, and that He truly has risen from the dead.  Our Easter Season is about placing faith in Him, and in the fact that He has conquered death and sin by His resurrection.  We may not see Him face to face, but we can experience His presence and His love in the depths of our hearts.  May He continue to deepen our faith, and may we continue to seek Him in all that we do during our time on earth.                     Father David
