SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

The beginning of Jesus’ public ministry is given to us in today’s Gospel, with two fundamental points presented.  First, Jesus begins to preach a basic message: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”  Second, He calls His first disciples to become part of His ministry: Peter and Andrew, and then James and John.  These foundational happenings continue to form us today, even though we are many years removed from them.  For someone who is serious about following Christ, repentance will always be a basic part of their life.  And the call to follow Jesus is given to each of us.  May we, like those first disciples, respond with willingness and trust, giving our lives to the One who is true life itself.       Father David

NO WEEKDAY MASSES THIS WEEK……VISITING PRIEST FOR WEEKEND……NEED FOR TRANSPORTATIONBecause of my surgery, I’m not able to celebrate Mass until sometime in February.  So there will be no weekday Masses this week in either parish.  And then, Father Jerry Dalseth will cover both parishes next weekend.  We thank him for coming, and hopefully I will be able to start offering Mass the following week.  However: I need to mention that the doctor has asked me to not drive for at least a month, possible even longer.  I will be calling parishioners to give me rides to Harding when I have Mass there.  If you would like to help me with this, please call me at 468-2111.  And thanks so much for your prayers and help during these days!  The surgery went well, but it’s going to take some time to recover fully.  Fractured vertebrae take time to heal, especially when you’re “approaching older age!”

                                                                                                                                                                                                Father David

RETREATS OFFEREDChrist the King Retreat Center in Buffalo has a wonderful variety of retreats offered through the year, both for individuals and in group settings.  During these cold winter days, this could be a wonderful gift that you give yourself.  Please call the retreat center at (763)682-1394.  Also, Father David can get you a copy of the retreats offered during the year.

HONORING MARRIAGE DAYThose couples celebrating their 5th, 25th, 40th or 50th anniversary this year are invited to an “Honoring Marriage” Day on May 3rd.  This takes place at Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Saint Cloud, starting at 1:00 pm, and includes Mass with Bishop Kettler and a reception.  Please call Father David at 468-2111 to arrange an invitation being sent to you.

NATIONAL CATHOLIC SCHOOL WEEK - Please join us for National Catholic Schools Week, the 40th anniversary of this annual event.  We have a whole week of activities planned (see last week’s bulletin attachment/insert or MCR) to demonstrate what our students are accomplishing and to celebrate the community we've built to educate tomorrow’s citizens and church leaders.  This year’s National Catholic Schools Week theme is based on community: “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.”  The theme highlights the fact that not only are schools communities themselves, they are also part of many other communities, including families, parishes, cities and our country.  In addition, the theme focuses on key components of Catholic education: faith development, academic excellence and dedication to service.  These elements set Catholic schools apart from our educational options.  They are why families make sacrifices to provide a Catholic education to their children.

**CAMP FOLEY BREAKFAST – Mark your calendar for the Camp Foley Breakfast in Buckman on Sunday, February 9th.

FROM GRACE’S CORNER:                             EMAIL: [email protected]                           PHONE NUMBER: 277-3832

Kids Say Such Sweet Things – A mom was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin, 5 and Ryan, 3.  The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake.  Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson.  “If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, ‘Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.’  Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, ‘Ryan, you be Jesus!’”

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of Love.  In return you will receive untold Peace and Happiness.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today’s Gospel is like an echo of last Sunday when we celebrated the Baptism of the Lord.  John the Baptist points out Jesus as the One that people have been expecting, and tells them that “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”  This reminds us of our own Baptism in which we received God’s Holy Spirit for the first time.  Later, in Confirmation, a deeper, more conscious reception of God’s Spirit takes place, partly because of a greater awareness of our young adults regarding their faith in Christ.  We pray that this Holy Spirit will truly come alive in us, leading us to give our lives to Jesus in faith, trust and love.                         Father David

SURGERY SCHEDULEDI will be needing surgery to repair the vertebrae fractures that happened with my fall last October.  The surgery is scheduled for Monday, January 20th in Saint Cloud, and will result in me being pretty much inactive for about two weeks.  Because of this there will not be any weekday Masses in either Parish January 21-23 and January 28-30.  We do have priests scheduled to come in for the weekends of January 25-26 (Father John Hawkins from Crosier in Onamia and February 1-2 (Father Jerry Dalseth).  Please welcome them, and I do ask your prayers for a successful surgery and recovery.              Father David

ROE V. WADE……41 YEARSAs we somberly recall the Supreme Court decision of January 22nd, 1973, which has resulted in the deaths of over 56 million unborn children, we continue to pray and work toward the day when legal protection will once again be given to all whose lives are vulnerable.  May each of us have a strong conviction of the humanity of the unborn, and may we be people of prayer while we work to change our culture’s attitude toward life

MARCH FOR LIFEPlease join us for the day to “Celebrate Life” on Wednesday, January 22nd.  A motor coach bus will leave Coborn’s in Little Falls at 7:30 am and then pick up in Pierz at Saint Joseph’s at 8:00 am.  We will be returning at approximately 4:00-4:30 pm.  Please bring along a bag lunch, warm clothes and a friend.  Sponsored by the Pierz KC’s.  To sign up for the bus ride, please contact Dale Beierman at 468-6225.

THANK YOU – Christmas is officially over, and thanks go out to all of you who helped with taking down the trees, hauling them out and all the other Christmas decorations.  The Christmas bulbs from the tree with the memory of your loved ones are in the Sacristy to be picked up.  Please pick up as soon as you can, or they can be left and used next year on the tree.  We all know that we’re in the Ordinary Time of the Church Year, as you maybe notice, the Church looks a little bare, but we do have the flowers.  Thanks Again!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus.  This marks the end of the Christmas Season, with tomorrow being the start of Ordinary Time in the Church calendar, which will continue until Ash Wednesday, March 5th.  It’s good today to recall that by His Baptism, Jesus began His public ministry.  This was the work of preaching, teaching and healing, and eventually of giving His life on the cross so that all of us could receive the priceless gift of salvation.  We also remember that, by our own Baptism, we too are called to be a witness to Jesus Himself.  Having been cleansed of Original Sin and being receivers of God’s Holy Spirit, we are empowered to live a life dedicated to God and His will.  May each of us respond to that Baptismal grace by giving ourselves to the Lord, trusting that He will lead us to our eternal reward.  Father David

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT…Take some time today to sit quietly with God.  Tell Him the things that hurt you right now, and ask for His comforting presence.  Sit still, and wait for Him to give you the peace that only He can give.  Expect Him to strengthen and encourage you to whatever you’re facing.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

A beautiful and much-loved part of our Christmas Season is the visit of the Magi—or “the 3 Kings”—to the child Jesus.  We celebrate this event in today’s Solemnity of the Epiphany.  This word means that something (or Someone) is being made known, is being made “manifest”, as the Church describes it.  This is a good time to realize that there can be a big difference between “knowing about” someone, and actually “knowing” that someone.  With Jesus, knowing about Him is absolutely necessary, but is not enough.  He wants us to know Him, to establish a personal, loving, trusting relationship with Him.  As we enter a new year, a wonderful resolution would be to make a special effort to come to know Christ, or to know Him more deeply.  It is this knowledge that makes a great difference in how we look at our Catholic faith and at the Church itself.                   Father David

PRIESTS RETREATBoth Father Ken Popp and I plan to be on retreat next week, from Sunday afternoon (January 12th) into Thursday afternoon.  In case of emergency, the phone number at Christ the King Retreat Center in Buffalo is (763)682-1394.  Please note that there will be no weekday Masses that week.                            Father David

THANK YOU FROM HARDING PLACE  - From Laurie Doroff at Harding Place: “Please put a thank you in the Bulletin thanking Parishioners who bought gifts for residents, and thanking Kathy Tax for the effort in organizing this for Harding Place.  It was greatly appreciated.”

THANK YOU FROM FOOD SHELVESBoth Pierz Area Food Shelf and Onamia Food Shelf send a thank you to those who donated toward their work at the Thanksgiving Service at the end of November.  One of their statements reads: “Your gift is making it possible for us to fulfill our mission to work with communities to build supportive, caring relationships to help people meet their basic needs.”

POPE FRANCIS AND HUNGER CAMPAIGNPope Francis has launched a worldwide campaign, “One Human Family, Food For All”, to respond to the critical situation of widespread hunger throughout the world.  More information will be coming on this, especially from Catholic Relief Services and Catholic Charities USA who are sponsoring this effort in the U.S.

ROE V. WADE….41 YEARS LATERThe ongoing tragedy of our unborn children being put to death continues to haunt us as we soon mark the 41st Anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision (January 22nd, 1973) that legalized abortion throughout the entire 9 months of pregnancy.  It can be tempting to give in to discouragement as we try to reverse this mentality that has such a strong hold in our society, especially among the leaders in our government.  But progress is being made, even if painfully slow.  Young people—shown at the Pro-Life marches and rallies especially—are increasingly coming to realize that human life exists from the moment of conception.  The ultrasound images and other scientific techniques unmistakably reveal a real child within its mother’s womb.  Please continue to work, to pray, and to witness to others your conviction about the unborn, and about every other human life that may be vulnerable to a “Pro-choice” mentality.  And it needs to be said that underneath that mentality is an even more fundamental evil at work: the turning away from God as the source and reason for our being.  Once the true God is taken out of the picture, other false gods inevitably come in to replace Him.  And these other goods invariably seek to serve our own pleasure rather than serve the truth, and serve the needs of others.

KOINONIA RETREATThe next Koinonia Retreat weekend is January 24th-26th at the TEC Center in Belle Prairie.  The weekend starts at 5:30 pm on Friday and ends on Sunday about 5:00 pm.  Applications can be downloaded from the website: centralmnkoinonia.org, or by calling LeRoy and Mary Lou Raden at (320)293-2080.  You can also call Father David at 468-2111 for an application form.  The cost for a weekend is $60.00, but help is available for those unable to afford this.  Koinonia is a great way for adults Catholics (and other Christians), age 20 and over, to renew their faith in Christ and to become a more active member in their church community.

SACRAMENTAL POLICIES FOR HOLY CROSS CHURCH: I received many calls on these topics, so being we are starting a New Year this is what was drawn up by Father and this is how it reads: One of the most difficult things that I have to do a lot as a pastor is to deal with money.  Every time you turn around people are talking budgets or the lack of money.  I come up with suggested donations.  This does not mean if you can’t pay this that I will turn you away.  My first priority is helping build the kingdom and relationship with God.  These donations go to the church not the pastor.  If you want to give something to the pastor it should be specified.  Weddings: $75.00; Baptisms, $15.00; Baptismal Certificates, $10.00; and Funerals, $50.00.  Hopefully, this will help you now!

THANK YOU goes out to John Blissenbach for the beautiful trees that he donated to Holy Cross Church.  Thanks to all who helped with the decorating of the trees and also the other Christmas decorating around the church.  Thanks go out to the ones who watered the trees and flowers and also donated flowers for their loved ones.  Thanks go out to all our behind-the-scene people!!!

YEAR OF 2014 – As we look toward a brand New Year of 2014, then gaze back to the past, we pause with mixed emotions, and memories that still last.  For the year has taught us lessons, we never thought we’d learn, to stand in the face of adversity, seeking peace which we yearn.  Each life a precious memory, each face burned in our souls, the hero, the innocent, those who were lost, were halves who made someone whole.  So we Pray for this year of 2014 to be peaceful, for strength to see us through, for each one who lost someone precious, and for all that is holy and true.  As we Pray God’s Eternal Blessings, for our leaders and our land, we walk toward the future together, Heart to Heart and Hand in Hand.  (Have a Very Happy and Blessed New Year of 2014)

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – In “The Universal Bank of God”…..God stores His Blessings and has deposited 365 days full of Love, Faith and Happiness for you…..So, enjoy spending it in 2014.

WEATHER – All you Minnesotans out there, do you love the Ice Age Weather we have?  Is this why we live in Minnesota?  What do I have to do to get warmer weather?  I’m ready to move to Hawaii and forget about Minnesota, how about you?  I really don’t know why I’m living in Minnesota, I dislike the Winters, I guess I’m getting old!  Hopefully, it’ll get better down the road!  Ha-Ha!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

It’s very logical for the Church to have this Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph right after celebrating the birth of Jesus.  Any birth of a child either creates or furthers the creation of a human family.  And every family is called to become “holy”, to become “set apart”, as it were, for God and for His kingdom.  While we may never do it as perfectly as Jesus, Mary and Joseph—although they had their challenges as a family, minus the sin that the rest of us fall into—we are still called to pattern our lives after them, as fully as possible.  May the Lord help all of us to strive after this holiness.  And may He bless each of you and your families during this Christmas Season!                Father David

SOLEMNITY OF MARY, MOTHER OF GODEvery January 1st we begin the new year by celebrating the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God.  Mass times will be Tuesday, December 31st, 8:00 pm at Saint John’s; then on Wednesday, January 1st at Holy Cross.  Please note that this is a Holy Day of Obligation in the Church.

THANK YOU!To each of you who gave prayer, a card or a gift to me for Christmas, my heartfelt thanks!  I’m not able to send a reply to everyone, so please accept this as my expression of gratitude to you.                     Father David

A PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS (Let’s please remember our Troops especially during this Christmas Season) – Dear Lord, We thank you for the lives and service of our men and women in the Armed Forces.  Strengthen them and give them guidance as they stand in harm’s way to protect our nation and way of life.  May they face each day of their service the same way Your Son Jesus did; with courage, dignity and faith.  And if it be Your will, when their work is through, bring them safely home.  Lord, please also bless the families of our troops.  Reward them generously, for their sacrifices are known only to You, while their loved ones are so far from home.  And may we never forget those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom and safety; those who have died in the service of our country.  May they rest in peace forever with You in Your kingdom.   Amen

A PRAYER FOR OUR NATION – Gracious and loving God, we come to you in humble prayer for the United States of America.  Bless our President, give him wisdom and strength to serve the American people and lead our country in ways that are pleasing to you.  Bless our Congress, instill in them knowledge and understanding to enact laws that protect the sanctity of life – from the unborn to the elderly; and promote the good of all people.  Bless the People of the United States, make us aware of our responsibility as citizens to uphold the principles of life, liberty, justice and equality.  Send your Holy Spirit upon our beloved country.  Make us people of faith in time of uncertainty.  Make us people of hope in times of trouble.  Make us people of compassion with those who are less fortunate.  Make us people of peace in our homes, our communities, our country and our world.   Amen

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

With all the advertising and activity that surround us this time of year, God’s Word gives a beautiful contrast in the person of Saint Joseph in today’s Gospel.  We have no words of his recorded in the Bible.  That in itself can speak to the need we have to listen, to be silent and still, and to trust that in those times of quiet God will speak to us.  The courage and trust that Joseph displays in taking Mary as His wife undoubtedly found their growth during times of listening and prayer.  We too can find the deeper meaning of Jesus’ birth, not by joining in the busyness of the “season,” but in pondering and listening.  It’s hard to find time for those during these days.  But the depth of faith and trust that can result are well worth the effort.               Father David

TO ALL PARISHIONERS AND YOUR FAMILIESMay God Bless your Christmas with much joy and peace, especially as you gather together to celebrate the Lord’s birth and to share your love and care for each other.  May this Christmas bring all of us deeper into our own personal relationship with Jesus.  May it also bring God’s peace to our world, so wounded by war, conflict, hunger and other struggles.

CHRISTMAS EVE AND CHRISTMAS DAYAll are invited to celebrate the Eucharist with us at our parishes of Saint John’s and Holy Cross on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  Masses on the 24th will be at 4:00 pm in Harding and 8:00 pm in Lastrup, with Christmas carols beginning ½ hour before each Mass.  Then on Christmas Day—thanks to the help given by Father Bernie Kahlhamer—both parishes will have a 9:00 am Mass.  Do join us to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior!

CONFESSION TIMESThe Sacrament of Penance will be offered today (Sunday) at 7:00 pm in Saint John’s and Monday at 7:00 pm in Holy Cross.  Anyone is also welcome to make an appointment for Confession by calling Father David at 468-2111.

THANK YOU, CHOIRS!This is a good time to give special thanks to our four choir groups that serve our two parishes so faithfully, week after week throughout the year.  We deeply appreciate the wonderful music you provide, and your leadership in helping all of us worship the Lord more deeply.  May God bless you for your hard work and sacrifice, and know that we are grateful for who you are and what you do!

NEW YEAR’S DAY…….MARY, THE MOTHER OF GODLooking ahead to January 1st, the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God: Masses will be 8:00 pm, December 31st, at Saint John’s, and 9:00 am, January 1st, at Holy Cross.  Please note that this is a Holy Day of Obligation.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

The word “patience” is a good description for Advent, and for how we often need to be in our lives.  In today’s 2nd Reading, James exhorts us to be patient like the farmer who awaits the life-giving rain for his crops.  And John the Baptist, in today’s Gospel, probably needed a good amount of patience before he was firmly convinced that Jesus was truly the one he was waiting for.  Many areas of our life require patient waiting before we realize the hopes and dreams that we put into them.  Behind all of this lies our God who knows how faith takes place within us.  At times it is only through a patient, trusting kind of walk that has to happen before we encounter the Lord more deeply within our souls.                   Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

John the Baptist is a prominent voice in our Advent Season.  As the one who prepared the people for Jesus’ coming, John also reminds us of two basic truths in our spiritual life: first, that repentance is always a key in our relationship with God; and second, that Jesus is the One who comes to “baptize” us with the Holy Spirit and with fire.  These words are challenging to understand, but we know that the Lord not only wants us to receive His Holy Spirit.  He also wants us to be “on fire” for Him and for the Gospel.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                Father David

IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONThis year, December 8th falls on a Sunday, which means that the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (normally a Holy Day of Obligation) will be celebrated the following day, December 9th.  Because of this transfer, the obligation to attend Mass is lifted.  However, all Catholics are encouraged to attend Mass this Monday, if at all possible.  Masses will be 8:00 am at Holy Cross and 7:30 pm at Saint John’s.  Join us as we honor what God has done in Mary’s life, by keeping her free from any stain of Original Sin from the moment of her conception.

SACRAMENT OF PENANCE DURING ADVENTThere will be a number of added times for going to Confession during this Advent Season.  Times this week are: tonight (Sunday) at 7:00 pm in Saint John’s; Tuesday, 6:00 pm at Saint John’s; Saturday, 3:00 pm at Holy Cross.  Plus we have the usual times before the Saturday 8:00 pm Mass and the Sunday 8:45 am Mass.  Also, next Sunday (December 15th) there will be Penance services at 2:00 pm (Saint John’s), 4:00 pm (Buckman) and 7:30 pm (Pierz).  At each of these there will be at least two priests available for Confession.

HONORING MARRIAGE DAYCouples celebrating 5th, 25th, 40th or 50th wedding anniversaries are invited to a special “Honoring Marriage” day on Saturday, May 3rd.  This event will take place at Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Saint Cloud, starting at 1:00 pm.  Send a note to Father David, and he will arrange to have you invited to this wonderful celebration.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

A blessed happy New Year!  No, I haven’t missed a month on the calendar.  Rather, today—the First Sunday of Advent—is the beginning of a new Church Year.  Once again we enter this special time in which we meditate on the Lord’s coming to us: both His first coming as a child in Bethlehem, and His second, which will happen at the end of time.  Today’s Gospel gives us some of Jesus’ words on this, emphasizing that we always need to be prepared.  Both Jesus and St. Paul, in the Second Reading, speak of the importance of living in the here and now.  Our call is to be faithful to the Lord, moment by moment, day by day.  He will take care of His Second Coming in His own time.                Father David

SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONThis year December 8th falls on a Sunday, which will move the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception to the following day, Monday, December 9th.  Because of this, the obligation to attend Mass is lifted.  However, all Catholics are strongly encouraged to attend Mass, if able to do so.  Masses on December 9th will be at 8:00 am at Holy Cross and 7:30 pm at Saint John’s.

PARISH BREAKFAST TODAY (SUNDAY) AT SAINT JOHN’SEveryone is invited to the parish breakfast today at Saint John’s.  Serving takes place from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.

PARISH LIAISONS TO DIOCESAN PASTORAL COUNCILThe Saint Cloud is divided into a number of “deaneries” which include parishes located fairly close to each other.   Lastrup and Harding are part of the Little Falls Deanery.  Each deanery has a representative to the “Pastoral Council” of the diocese.  This council brings parish concerns to the Bishop from these representatives.  The rep from the Little Falls Deanery is Darrell Welle of Holy Family Parish in Belle Prairie.  Darrell has asked our parishes to have a liaison person that he would communicate with as far as parish concerns to bring to the Bishop.  The liaisons from our parishes are Dale Beierman of Saint John’s and Phyllis Schmidtbauer of Holy Cross.  Parishioners are welcome to call them if they have concerns that they think should go to the Pastoral Council.  Dale’s phone is 468-6225 and Phyllis’ phone is 277-3869.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE CELEBRATIONA special Mass in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe will take place Sunday, December 15th at Saint John’s Abbey Church in Collegeville.  Mass begins at 2:00 pm, with Bishop Kettler presiding.  The special intention of this Mass is to pray for all immigrants and for a just reformation of the immigration laws in the United States.  Following Mass, a reception will be held in Guild Hall with Latino cuisine and entertainment.
