SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

On this Sunday after Christmas, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.  It’s significant that Jesus was born into a human family, with a father and mother to care for Him as He grew and matured.  It tells us of the central place that God has given to the family.  This is where we learn about the Lord to begin with, and this is where we first experience this great love and forgiveness, shown to us through our parents and other family members (granted, we and other members fall short of that at times!)  May God bless all of us and our families.  And may He make us witnesses to Himself in a world so much in need of His healing and compassion.                    Father David

BLESSINGS AND THANK YOUMay God bless each of you and your families during this Christmas Season!  A special word of thanks to all who sent cards, gifts and prayers during these past days.  I’m not able to respond to each one, but know that I deeply appreciate your loving concern and support!             Father David

SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE MOTHER OF GODThursday is the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, a Holy Day of Obligation.  Mass times will be Wednesday, 8:00 pm at Holy Cross, and Thursday, 9:00 am at Saint John’s.  Please join us as we worship God and thank Him for honoring Mary in such a beautiful way.  May her prayers bring us close to her Son, Jesus Christ, as we continue to celebrate His birth.

PRACTICE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AT SAINT JOHN’SOur youth at Saint John’s are once again welcome to help lead us at the 10:45 am Mass on Sunday, January 4th.  Practice for this will be Friday, January 2nd at 7:00 pm.

A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR to Holy Cross and Saint John Nepomuk Parishioners – Let this coming year be better…Vow to do some of the things you’ve always wanted to do but couldn’t find the time.  Call up a forgotten friend.  Share a funny story with someone whose spirits are dragging.  A good laugh can be very good medicine.  Make a genuine effort to stay in closer touch with family and good friends.  The sure way to have a friend is to be one.  Find the time to be kind and thoughtful.  Give a compliment.  Listen more.  Be kind.  Walk tall and SMILE more.  You’ll look 10 years younger.  Don’t be afraid to say, “I Love You.”  Say it again.  They are the sweetest words in the world!                Grace

PRAYER FOR OUR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE – Jesus, please bless and protect all our children and young people.  Enliven the gift of faith that You placed within them at their Baptism.  Please open their hearts to experience Your love.  Draw them closer to You in a personal relationship.  Let them know that You are always with them.  Fill them with Your Holy Spirit.  Please guide them to good friends.  Also, please bring back those who wander from You, that they might know and love Your Son, Jesus.  Amen.

OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF OUR SWEET BABES – A little girl went up to her mother one day while holding her stomach saying, “Mommy, my stomach hurts.”  Her mother replied, “That’s because it’s empty, you have to put something into it!”  Later that day, the pastor and his wife were over for dinner.  The pastor’s wife began to feel bad.  Holding her head she said, “I have such a terrible headache!”  The little girl looked up at her, giving her the sweetest smile that any little child could give.  Then she said, “That’s because it’s empty, you have to put something into it!”

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Last Sunday we heard the Advent message that John the Baptist spoke to the people who were waiting for the Messiah.  Today we hear about John himself, who he is and who he is not.  He testifies that he is not the Christ that people are waiting for, nor is he one of the prophets of old.  Rather, he says that he is “the voice of one crying out in the desert, make straight the way of the Lord.”  The words we speak should testify to who we are.  And all Christians are meant to be a voice calling others to recognize Jesus for who he is: the Lamb of God, the Savior, who takes away the sins of the world.                                Father David

ADORATION THIS WEEK AT SAINT JOHN’S:

We hold our monthly Adoration at Saint John’s this Tuesday.  The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed on the altar from 4:30 pm until just before the 7:00 pm Mass, then again after Mass until 10:30 pm.  Everyone is welcome to come and spend time in prayer, asking the Lord to guide and strengthen us as his people.  If you are able to sign up for an hour on the sheet in the entry—assuring that the hours will be covered—that would be great!  Thanks!

ADDED CONFESSION TIMESAs Catholics, we are encouraged to make the Sacrament of Penance a central part of our Advent time.  Besides the regular Confession times of Saturday, 7:15 pm at Saint John’s, and Sunday, 8:00 am at Holy Cross, this sacrament will be offered as follows this week: today (Sunday), 7:00 pm at Holy Cross; Tuesday, 6:00 pm at Saint John’s; Wednesday, 6:30 pm at Holy Cross; Thursday, 7:00 pm at Saint John’s; Saturday, 3:00 pm at Holy Cross.  Next Sunday will also have 3:00 pm Confessions at Saint John’s, and then a Penance Service with individual Confessions at Saint Joseph’s in Pierz at 7:00 pm.

WEEKDAY MASS……ARE YOU ABLE TO COME? – A quiet, but very important component of parish life is the weekday Masses that are celebrated in both parishes.  It’s understandable that the majority of people are not able to come to these, given their work schedule as well as family and other obligations.  But a special word of encouragement to those who are able to come……we need you!  Over time there is a tendency for these numbers to dwindle, as people age and younger folk don’t replace them.  If you’re able to come, please gift us with your presence.  We need you to continue this very needed part of our parish worship life!

FROM GRACE’S CORNER:                             Email: [email protected]                                     Phone Number: 277-3832

ADVENT PRAYER – It can be difficult to prepare our lives for Jesus amidst the busy preparations of a material Christmas.  The four weeks before Christmas are a time to prepare our families to celebrate Jesus’ birth; to prepare our minds to accept that God’s Son became a baby and lived and died for us; to prepare our hearts to accept God’s forgiveness, and to change our ways, to prepare our souls to receive God’s healing grace through the celebration of Mass; to take part in not only the work of preparation, but also the hope and joy in the midst of our work.  Amen.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – Prayer is not a “Spare Wheel” you pull out when in trouble; it is the “Steering Wheel” that leads you on the right path.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Once again we come to the special season of Advent.  It’s meant to be a time of prayer, reflection and looking forward to celebrating the Lord’s birth at Christmas.  It’s also a time when our Scripture readings remind us that Jesus will come again, in glory at the end of time.  And even though no one knows that day or hour, today’s Gospel gives us words that are meant for every day: “Be watchful!  Be alert!  You do not know when the time will come.”  May we have these days with prayer, centering our lives on the Lord as fully and completely as we can.                         Father David

WELCOME, FATHER JOHN! – We welcome Father John Odero as he celebrates the Sunday Masses in both of our parishes.  Father John’s experience in ministering both in Africa and here in the U.S. gives him a unique perspective on the Church in the world.  Good to have you with us, Father John!

PRACTICE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE AT SAINT JOHN’SOur young people from Saint John’s are invited to a practice on Friday at 7:00 pm, at the church.  This is to prepare for the 10:45 am Mass on Sunday, December 7th.  Even if you haven’t been involved before with this monthly ministry, feel most welcome to join us!

IMMACULATE CONCEPTION, DECEMBER 8Looking ahead, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary on December 8.  Masses that day will be 8:00 am and 5:30 pm at Saint John’s, and 8:00 pm at Holy Cross.  This is still a Holy Day of Obligation, even though it falls on a Monday this year.

Keep these thoughts with you throughout the coming year of 2015 – 1). If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it.  2). If He had a wallet, your photo would be in it.  3). He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning.  4). Whenever you want to talk, He’ll listen.  5). He could live anywhere in the universe, and He chose your heart.  6). What about the Christmas gift He will sent you in Bethlehem, not to mention that Friday at Calvary.  Face it He really does love you.  And remember: God answers Knee-Mail!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today is the last Sunday of the Church Year, and we celebrate it by honoring Jesus Christ as King of the Universe.  It’s a fitting title for Him, as it points to the day when all will recognize Him as the only ruler of all creation.  The words “king” and “ruler” can seem rather negative, but we realize that God’s rule is meant to be loving and compassionate.  Today’s Gospel scene shows that kind of love that we are asked to have for others, especially those most in need.            Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today’s Scriptures speak both of the Lord’s Second Coming and of the need to use our talents in the present moment.  As we approach the end of the Church Year, the “end times” do have a prominent place in the readings.  Yet, we can never forget the day to day responsibility we have to better this world here and now.  May the Lord help us to be faithful in this life, while also looking forward to the joy He promises in eternal life.      Father David

SABBATICAL REMINDERI do plan on being away for a sabbatical next June and July.  Just to note that I plan to take any funerals that may come.  Baptisms, however, I hope to have Father Jerry Dalseth take, he would prefer these during Mass, if at all possible.  The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick may best be taken by Father Ken Popp from Pierz and Buckman, or by another area priest, such as one of the Crosiers from Onamia.

TUESDAY MASS IN MORNINGBecause of First Penance on Tuesday evening, Mass for Tuesday will be at 8:00 am in Saint John’s.

FIRST RECONCILIATIONParents and children in both parishes are reminded of our First Reconciliation service Tuesday evening, 6:30 pm at Holy Cross.  All of us are asked to keep the children from all four of our area parishes in prayer as they come to receive this wonderful sacrament of God’s mercy and love during these days.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today we celebrate a feast called “The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica.”  This may sound like an odd title for us to mark, but the reflection in one of our missalettes may be helpful.  It says, “The Basilica of Saint John Lateran is the pope’s cathedral as bishop of Rome.”  This church is called “the mother and head of all churches of Rome and in the world.”  So, we are looking at this church as a sign of the unity of all Catholics around the world.  And this unity finds its expression in our loyalty to the pope, especially now to Pope Francis.  May the Lord bless this unity and give it the grace to continue to grow throughout the world.        Father David

FIRST RECONCILIATION Prayer is asked for all our children from the four parishes who will be receiving their First Reconciliation next week.  To note: our children from Holy Cross and Saint John’s will be receiving this sacrament on Tuesday, November 18th at Holy Cross.  Because of that evening time, Mass that day at Saint John’s will be in the morning at 8:00 am.

ADORATION ON NOVEMBER 18Even though Mass will be in the morning, we will still have our monthly adoration at Saint John’s on Tuesday, November 18th.  We do need people to sign up on the sheet in the church entry, especially since Father David will be in Harding for some time that evening for First Reconciliation.  Thank you so much to those who have been faithfully attending this Adoration time over the last few months!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

An often quoted verse of Scripture comes from today’s Gospel: “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”  Jesus is telling us that we do have civil, government obligations that we have to meet.  But we need to give to God what belongs to Him.  And when all said and done, that really means everything.  All else that we give or withhold here on earth will pass away.  Only what we give to the Lord—our very life and loyal commitment—will last into eternity.        Father David

SABBATICAL NOTESA reminder that I plan to be on a sabbatical during the months of June and July in 2015.  A note to those who may be having Baptism at that time: Father Jerry Dalseth, who is scheduled to have the weekend Masses, could do the Baptisms, but would like them during Mass, if possible.  Otherwise, parents may want to consider having their Baptism before June 1st or after July 31st.                Father David

Let’s continue on with the eight-year-old boy in the third grade on his essay – Explaining God  *You should always go to Church on Sunday, because it makes God happy, and if there’s anybody you want to make happy. It’s God.  Don’t skip Church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach.  This is wrong.  And besides the sun doesn’t come out at the beach until noon anyway.  If you don’t believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can’t go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can.  It is good to know He’s around you when you’re scared in the dark or when you can’t swim and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids. “But…you shouldn’t just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and He can take me back anytime He pleases.  And…that’s why I believe in God.”  (Good job explaining God by a 3rd grader).

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Jesus gives us another parable about the kingdom of heaven in today’s Gospel.  The emphasis is on the invitation that each of us receives, being invited to the Lord’s “wedding feast” for His Son.  We are free to accept or reject the invitation, as the parable shows.  But the consequence of rejecting can mean a life of eternity apart from God…..obviously not a pleasant thought!  It’s a difficult truth to face, and many would contest this reality.  But it stands to reason that the choices we make here on earth will have eternal consequences after we leave this life.       Father David

MEMORIAL MASS NEXT SUNDAYEveryone is invited to the special “Memorial Mass” at Saint John’s next Sunday at 10:45 am.  LaVerne and the Starlites will be providing the music, with a potluck lunch to follow at the parish center.  During Mass we will remember in a special way our loved ones who have gone before us.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

This year the Saint Cloud Diocese celebrates the 125th anniversary of its founding.  Bishop Kettler has asked us to mark this event in a special way this weekend by honoring Saint Cloud, our patron saint, whose feast is September 7th.  Briefly, Saint Cloud was born in 522 in France, the grandson of Clovis who founded the kingdom of the Franks.  Going through family and political strife, Saint Cloud eventually gave up his right of succession and entered a hermitage, living in solitude and prayer.  He was ordained a priest in 551 and proved himself to be a dedicated pastor, known for his gifts of healing, counseling and preaching.  He died peacefully in 560, at only 38 years of age.  We ask his intercession for our diocese and for our personal lives, that we may always remain faithful to the Lord.                            Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Following Jesus gives much joy, but it also means accepting the cross as part of being His disciple.  Today’s Gospel brings us that teaching, emphasized in Jesus’ own words: “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”  No one enjoys carrying the cross, no matter what form it may take.  Yet we realize, as we grow in our faith, that it is often through the cross that we become stronger, deeper in our love, and more empathetic with the needs of others.  May the Lord enable all of us to accept the cross when it comes, knowing that He has the power to transform its weight a virtue that brings us closer to Him.
