SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

As our Easter Season continues, and we move toward the great feast of Pentecost, our Gospel readings speak more of the coming of the Holy Spirit.  Today Jesus tells His disciples about “another Advocate,” also called “the Spirit of truth,” that He will send to them.  We can imagine how mystified they must have felt when first hearing about this.  They were still trying to grapple with the truth of who Jesus is, that He is one with God the Father.  And now there’s this third being, also equal with the Father and Jesus.  Certainly enough to make their heads spin as they try to understand this new truth of who God is!  We too find it challenging to understand the Lord, which really is as it should be.  If we understood God completely, we would bring Him down to our own level.  As it is, the Lord will always be beyond our complete comprehension.  And that’s o.k.  Knowing that He is so much greater than we are assures us that He can give us the gift of eternal life, something we would be powerless to give to ourselves.     Father David

MEMORIAL DAY MASSJoin us at 9:00 am Monday at Saint John’s as we honor those who have given their lives in defense of our country’s freedom.  May God continue to keep us free and help us to become more and more a holy nation, dedicated to serving Him and His people.

ANNUAL DIOCESAN APPEALThrough the Annual Diocesan Appeal in our Saint Cloud Diocese, many programs are funded which help Catholics and others throughout this area—and beyond—to find help, both in their faith and in their temporal needs.  As one note from the Chancery Office puts it: “The Annual Diocesan Appeal is an exercise in gratitude.  When we offer gifts of time, talent or treasure, we are simply thanking God for all that we have.  Your gift to the Diocesan Appeal is a symbol of your love for God and neighbor.  Please know your prayers and gifts have made a difference.  God bless you!”

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

It’s difficult to not worry about things in this life.  Health, finances, family, personal problems…..all of these challenge us at various times, and it’s a test of our faith to meet those challenges.  The words of Jesus in today’s Gospel take on deepened meaning during these times: “Do not let your hearts be troubled.  You have faith in God; have faith also in Me.”  Trusting that God knows what we need and will provide what is best for us…..this takes a daily letting go.  It also means that we strive to be people of prayer.  Bringing ourselves and our needs to Him in prayer, and then trusting Him for the outcome is what we are asked to do.  This is the kind of life that the Lord asks us to live day by day.                         Father David

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – Please carry your Rosary every day with you.  When you carry a Rosary, Satan has a headache and when you use it, he collapses, when he sees you praying it, he faints.  Let’s pray the Rosary every day, so that he’ll keep fainting.  Maybe one day, he’ll have a stroke and never be able to work.   (*Remember the Month of May is Mary’s Month – the Rosary)

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

One of the very comforting identities of Jesus in Scripture is that of the Good Shepherd.  Most of us, at one time or another, have found strength and courage when we realize how great and constant the love is that Jesus has for us, the “sheep of His flock.”  And in today’s Gospel, we are told that the shepherd “calls His own sheep by name and leads them out.”  The Lord assures us of His care and concern, having us always deep within His own heart.  As He says at the end of this Gospel: “I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”  In our times of stress and struggle, may we always remember that our Good Shepherd promises to walk with us, leading us into an abundant life of joy and peace that will be ours for all eternity.                   Father David

WHAT IS A MOTHER? – It takes a Mother’s Love to make a House a Home, a place to be remembered, no matter where we roam.  It takes a Mother’s Patience, to bring a child upright, and her Courage and her Cheerfulness to make a dark day bright.  It takes a Mother’s Thoughtfulness to mend the Heart’s deep “hurts,” and her skill and her endurance to mend little socks and shirts.  It takes a Mother’s Kindness to Forgive us when we err, to sympathize in trouble and bow her head in prayer.  It takes a Mother’s Wisdom to Recognize our needs and to give us reassurance by her loving words and deeds.  It takes a Mother’s Endless Faith, her Confidence and Trust to guide us through the pitfalls of selfishness and trust.  And that is why in all the world there could not be another who could fulfill God’s Purpose as completely as a MOTHER!  (*How true and well said about our Mom’s – Thanks Mom!)

A MOTHER’S DAY PRAYERMay God bless all of our Mother’s who spread their love and sharing their hope and wisdom nurturing each one of us all through our lives.  May God bless all the Mother’s who have worked timelessly praying and providing for us anything it takes to give us a better life.  May God bless all of the Mother’s on this Mother’s Day and every day for her blessings she shares each day of the year.  May God bless all of the Mother’s for this I pray for if anyone deserves it, don’t they?  Amen.  (*Asking God’s Blessings on all our Mom’s, Grandmother’s and Mom’s-to-Be, Our Mom’s are the Stars of our lives-Love U).

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today’s Gospel presents the well-known account of Jesus appearing to two of His disciples as they walked the road toward the village of Emmaus.  Not recognizing Him at first, they enter into a heartfelt conversation with Him which culminates in His breaking bread at the meal.  This opens their eyes to who He is, which re-kindles the fire of their hope and joy.  They now realize that Jesus truly is risen, and they hasten back to Jerusalem to tell the other disciples.  All of this shows us two fundamental things: first, that Jesus walks with us, often unknowingly, often unrecognized.  We might feel alone, feel that He’s not there.  But He always is.  No matter what our feelings may say, we can know for certain that He is present.  And second, in the “breaking of the bread,” that is, the Eucharist, Jesus is deeply, lovingly present to us.  When we receive His Body and Blood, we can know beyond any doubt that we have received the Lord in a unique, wondrous way.  And we thank Him for this gift that gives us light, hope and peace!   Fr. David

MEMO FROM GOD – TO:  You;  DATE:  Today;  SUBJECT:  Yourself;  RERERENCE:  This is God.  Today, I will be handling all of your problems for you.  I do not need your help.  So, have a nice day.  I love you!  P.S.  And remember…If life happens to deliver a situation to you that you cannot handle, do not attempt to resolve it yourself!  Kindly put it is the SFGTD (Something For God To Do) box.  I will get to it in MY TIME.  All situations will be resolved, but in My Time, not yours.  Once the matter is placed into the box, do not hold onto it by worrying about it.  Instead, focus on all the wonderful things that are present in your life now.  Should you decide to send this to a friend, Thank You.  You may have touched their life in ways you will never know!  Now, you have a nice day!     GOD

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

After His resurrection, Jesus appeared a number of times to His disciples, showing them in many ways that He truly was alive.  Today’s Gospel gives us two of those appearances, the second of which many people recall.  This is the one in which “Doubting Thomas” had his disbelief swept away by Jesus, both by His appearance and by His words.  In a way, Thomas is a comfort to many of us.  We too wrestle with doubts and fears, and it helps to know that others share our struggle.  While we may not see Jesus face to face as Thomas did, we are assured that He truly has risen, that He has conquered the power of sin and death.  And we encounter Him—by faith—in the Eucharist each time we go to Mass.  This is the faith that will sustain us in our earthly journey until we experience the tremendous joy that will come when we encounter Him in His glory in His Father’s kingdom.    Father David

FIRST COMMUNION CHILDREN invited to help with the crowning of Mary at the beginning of the 8:45 am and 10:45 am Masses next Sunday at Holy Cross and Saint John’s.

PRACTICE FOR CHILDREN LEADING MASS MAY 4TH – On Sunday, May 4th at the 10:45 am Mass at Saint John’s, we hope to have children and young people of the parish take leadership roles with the Introduction, Readings, Intercessions and Presentation of Gifts.  This is in keeping with the hope that our youth and their parents have a desire to be involved in their parish’s liturgy as much as possible.  To help this take place, we have a practice scheduled for Friday evening, May 2nd, at 7:00 at Saint John’s.  This is open to any young person who would like to help out on Sunday.  Please consider coming Friday evening, to become more deeply involved in the parish celebration of the Eucharist in our Sunday worship.

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE WEEK:

Today: Acts 2:42-47; I Peter 1:3-9; John 20:19-31.  Next Sunday (May 4th): Acts 2:14, 22-33; I Peter 1:17-21; Luke 24: 13-35.

HONORING MARRIAGE DAY MAY 3RD:

Those couples celebrating their 5th, 25th, 40th, 50th and 60th anniversaries this year can still receive an invite to “Honoring Marriage Day” with Bishop Kettler on Saturday, May 3rd, at Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Saint Cloud.  The day starts at 1:00 pm and includes Mass and a reception after.  Call Father David at 468-2111 to receive an invitation.

OUR EASTER CANDLES AND THEIR COLORS:

In both of our parishes we have a “Jewel” Easter Candle, and it may be good to know what each of the three brilliant colors represent.  The red is for ruby, the stone considered most powerful, honoring Christ as the most powerful being in the universe.  The blue is for sapphire, a serene and calming color, honoring Christ as the Prince of Peace.  And the green represents emerald, a healing stone paying homage to Christ the Great Healer.

INVITATION TO ALL PARISHIONERS, FAMILY, FRIENDS AND VISITORS for Thursday evening, May 1st from 7:00-8:00 pm with Divine Mercy Adoration and followed by Mass at 8:00 pm.  A Holy Hour, such as the Adoration is, can be summed up in a simple story.  A visitor to a Catholic parish noticed an old man just sitting in the back of the parish with his eyes on the tabernacle.  After some time, curiosity got the better of the visitor and he asked the old man, “What are you doing?”  The man replied, “I look at Him, and He looks at me.”  A perfectly good Holy Hour can be made simply by sitting in the presence of Our Risen Lord.  Please join us!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

To all of our parishioners, and to family members, guests and visitors who may be reading this Bulletin, may God bring you an Easter of great joy and assurance as we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ!  During our days of Lent, and especially in this past Holy Week, we walked with the Lord through His Paschal Mystery of dying and rising.  Now we claim fully the reality of His victory over sin and death.  His promise to us is that by following Him and giving our lives to Him, we too will share in that victory.  As we begin these 50 days of the Easter Season, may God bring us a deepening joy that comes from knowing Jesus Christ.  And may each of us trust the Lord to continue to bring us through our earthly journey, until the day we celebrate the eternal Easter in His kingdom of peace!                           Father David

“CHILDREN’S MASS AT SAINT JOHN’SAll children and young people of Saint John’s are invited to be part of the 10:45 am Mass at Saint John’s on Sunday, May 4th.  We realize that this is potentially a large number of people, but we are hoping to have a monthly Mass at Saint John’s in which the young people take leadership in being Lectors, Ushers, Gift-Bearers, etc.  We’d like to try this for the first time on May 4th.  And with this effort, we would like to have a practice on Friday evening, May 2nd, at 7:00 pm at Saint John’s.  We’ll see how many come, and then will plan the Mass parts from there.  Any questions, please call Father David at 468-2111.  We’re hoping that this will help our children and their families to have a greater participation in the Sunday Eucharist which is so much at the heart of our Catholic faith.  P.S. That weekend will also have the May Crowning of Mary in our parishes.

MY EASTER PRAYER TO ALL OF YOU – Heavenly Father and God of mercy, we no longer look for Jesus among the dead, for He is alive and has become the Lord of life.  From the waters of death you raise us with Him and renew Your gift of life within us.  Increase in our minds and hearts the risen life we share with Christ and help us to grow as your people toward the fullness of eternal life with you.  We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

The title of today’s special feast is called “Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord.”  This speaks to us of two life-changing happenings in the life of Jesus, events that led to His death and resurrection, events that lead us into the gift of His salvation.  The “Palm Sunday” observance today re-lives the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem shortly before His betrayal and death.  For a brief time He was acclaimed as king, with people laying branches before him as He entered, riding on a colt.  But all too soon those acclamations turned into cries for His crucifixion and death.  The “Passion of the Lord” is given in today’s Gospel, an account that we re-live by actively taking part in the Gospel itself.  It’s the beginning of Holy Week, the most sacred time of the year.  May we live these days well, in prayer and meditation on the great love of Christ that led Him to give His life for us. Father David

HOLY WEEK LITURGIES;

HOLY THURSDAY – On Thursday, at 8:00 pm in Saint John’s, we celebrate the Last Supper of Jesus with His disciples.  The gift of His Body and Blood, first given to them, is also our food and drink on this special evening.  Please not that after the procession with the Blessed Sacrament that ends the Mass, we will have Adoration until 10:30 pm.  Do join us for this graced time of prayer!

GOOD FRIDAY – On Friday at 1:00 pm in Harding and 3:00 pm in Lastrup, we mark the Lord’s passion and death.  We venerate the cross on which He died.  This is the one day of the year in which Mass is not celebrated, although we are still privileged to receive the Body of Christ at Communion.  We thank Father Bernie Kahlhamer for taking the 3:00 pm service at Saint John’s.  And a reminder that this is a day of both fasting (one full meal) and abstinence (no meat).  Also, on this day a collection is taken up to be sent to the Holy Land.  Your generosity is very much appreciated!  Plus….we ask you to bring your Rice Bowl offerings to church this day, or whenever you can.  These monies are then sent on to Catholic Relief Services.

HOLY SATURDAYThis most solemn feast will be celebrated at Holy Cross at 8:00 pm on Saturday.  We mark the transition from the darkness of death which claimed Jesus in His humanity, moving into the great joy of His resurrection.  Our candles and the blessing of the new water proclaim Christ’s victory over sin and death, giving us that sure hope of eternal life that we are destined to share with Him forever!

EASTER SUNDAY OF THE LORD’S RESURRECTIONThis greatest feast of the entire year will be celebrated at 9:00 am next Sunday in both parishes.  We thank Father John Hawkins from the Crosiers in Onamia for coming to Holy Cross for this Easter Sunday Mass!

The last of the Bible Readings on the Lord’s Prayer…..Our Father – Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil – Holy Week:  Monday, James 1:2-18; Tuesday, Psalm 25:1-10; Wednesday, Matthew 26:9-27:14; Thursday, Matthew 26:26-46; Friday, 1 Corinthians 15:51-57; Saturday, 2 Timothy 3:14-17;4:6-8.     For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever – Easter:  Romans 8:31-39.  (Hopefully, this was some help for you and your family to do a little Bible Reading during Lent).

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT DURING THIS HOLY WEEK – So today in prayer, try to picture Jesus looking at you.  Let Him see into your Heart.  Let Him see your Hopes and Fears, your Needs and Desires.  It’s okay. He knows them already.  But if you give Him the chance to look closely, you’ll began to see yourself as Jesus sees you: as a Valued Member of His Family, as a Beloved Child of His Father, and as a Brother or Sister who really is deserving of His Love and Affection.  (Have a super great Holy Week with Jesus!)

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

As we move more deeply into Lent, our Scripture readings begin to point clearly to the great fact of resurrection.  Today’s Gospel describes one of Jesus’ most powerful miracles….the raising of Lazarus from the dead.  And while this was not yet the defining act by which death was conquered, it made people realize that they were dealing with someone who had unique power over natural forces, even the final force of death that comes to every human being.  Before long they would witness that  final act by which death would be overcome by the Author of Life, even though that Someone would seemingly allow death to first conquer Him. Fr. David

STATIONS OF THE CROSS AND TUESDAY TEACHINGJoin us as we mark the Stations of the Cross during Lent.  These are prayed Tuesday evening at Saint John’s after the 7:00 pm Mass, and Wednesday evening at Holy Cross after the 7:30 pm Mass.  Also, everyone is welcome to our Lenten series of teaching after the Tuesday Stations at Saint John’s.  The topic this week will be “God is Love.”

PALM SUNDAY……..LOOKING AHEADParishioners in both parishes are reminded of the special beginning of the Masses next weekend for Palm Sunday.  At Saint John’s, we hope to begin in the parish center with the procession of palms.  However, this will depend much on the weather, so please be prepared to start in the church if need be.  At Holy Cross, we will begin in the church basement with the blessing and procession of palms.  This day begins Holy Week, the most sacred time of the entire year, marking the “Paschal Mystery” of Jesus Christ by which death was conquered and resurrected life was brought to us.

“VICTORIA’S VAN”Holy Cross parish is sponsoring a special account at Farmer’s and Merchant’s Bank in Pierz that will be used toward purchasing a used adapted van for the Richard and Julie Langer family.  Victoria and John, children of Richard and Julie, have many special needs, and the family is in great need of a vehicle that would spare them the difficult task of lifting the children and wheelchairs into their vehicle.  Any check for this account can be made out to “Victoria’s Van”, and any amount is very much appreciated.  A special collection will also be taken up at Holy Cross next Sunday (Palm Sunday) to help meet this need.  Again, a check given there can be made out to “Victoria’s Van.”  The estimated cost for the van is $40,000.00.

LITTLE HUMOR – A little 3-year-old boy was having a meal one evening.  After everyone finished praying, he said, “Grandma, I only prayed halfway.”  “What do you mean?” I asked.  “I only had one eye closed,” he answered.
