SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

An often quoted verse of Scripture comes from today’s Gospel: “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”  Jesus is telling us that we do have civil, government obligations that we have to meet.  But we need to give to God what belongs to Him.  And when all said and done, that really means everything.  All else that we give or withhold here on earth will pass away.  Only what we give to the Lord—our very life and loyal commitment—will last into eternity.        Father David

SABBATICAL NOTESA reminder that I plan to be on a sabbatical during the months of June and July in 2015.  A note to those who may be having Baptism at that time: Father Jerry Dalseth, who is scheduled to have the weekend Masses, could do the Baptisms, but would like them during Mass, if possible.  Otherwise, parents may want to consider having their Baptism before June 1st or after July 31st.                Father David

MEMORIAL MASS AT SAINT JOHN’S TODAYEveryone is invited to have their deceased loved ones remembered at the special “Memorial Mass” at 10:45 am today (Sunday) at Saint John’s.  A potluck lunch will follow at the parish center.

HOLY CROSS PARISH/FINANCE COUNCIL MEETINGParish and Finance Council members of Holy Cross are reminded of the special meeting this Thursday at 7:30 pm.  This will be to discuss the possibility of having a columbarium in our parish cemetery.

PRACTICE FOR SAINT JOHN’S YOUNG PEOPLEThe next time for our youth to lead us at Mass will be November 2nd at 10:45 am.  Because the previous Friday evening is October 31st, and there is an 8:00 pm Mass at Saint John’s for All Saints Day—plus it is Halloween—we are tentatively having practice on Saturday, November 1st at 11:00 am.  Watch for confirmation of this in next Sunday’s Bulletin.

Let’s continue on with the eight-year-old boy in the third grade on his essay – Explaining God  *You should always go to Church on Sunday, because it makes God happy, and if there’s anybody you want to make happy. It’s God.  Don’t skip Church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach.  This is wrong.  And besides the sun doesn’t come out at the beach until noon anyway.  If you don’t believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can’t go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can.  It is good to know He’s around you when you’re scared in the dark or when you can’t swim and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids. “But…you shouldn’t just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and He can take me back anytime He pleases.  And…that’s why I believe in God.”  (Good job explaining God by a 3rd grader).

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Jesus gives us another parable about the kingdom of heaven in today’s Gospel.  The emphasis is on the invitation that each of us receives, being invited to the Lord’s “wedding feast” for His Son.  We are free to accept or reject the invitation, as the parable shows.  But the consequence of rejecting can mean a life of eternity apart from God…..obviously not a pleasant thought!  It’s a difficult truth to face, and many would contest this reality.  But it stands to reason that the choices we make here on earth will have eternal consequences after we leave this life.       Father David

MEMORIAL MASS NEXT SUNDAYEveryone is invited to the special “Memorial Mass” at Saint John’s next Sunday at 10:45 am.  LaVerne and the Starlites will be providing the music, with a potluck lunch to follow at the parish center.  During Mass we will remember in a special way our loved ones who have gone before us.

ANNUAL APPEAL…..STILL TIME TO GIVEOur Annual Diocesan Appeal is the primary support for many ministries in our Diocese, including the TV Mass, Marriage Preparation, Vocations, and a number of others.  Bishop Kettler encourages us to be as generous as we can, as he quotes Pope Francis: “Life is not given to us to be jealously guarded…..but given to us that we may give it in turn.”  Please consider prayerfully the needs of the Diocese, and give a gift if you have not yet done so.  Any check can be made out to “Diocese of Saint Cloud,” and marked “Annual Appeal.”  We will forward it to the Chancery Office.  And thank you for your gift!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

This year the Saint Cloud Diocese celebrates the 125th anniversary of its founding.  Bishop Kettler has asked us to mark this event in a special way this weekend by honoring Saint Cloud, our patron saint, whose feast is September 7th.  Briefly, Saint Cloud was born in 522 in France, the grandson of Clovis who founded the kingdom of the Franks.  Going through family and political strife, Saint Cloud eventually gave up his right of succession and entered a hermitage, living in solitude and prayer.  He was ordained a priest in 551 and proved himself to be a dedicated pastor, known for his gifts of healing, counseling and preaching.  He died peacefully in 560, at only 38 years of age.  We ask his intercession for our diocese and for our personal lives, that we may always remain faithful to the Lord.                            Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Following Jesus gives much joy, but it also means accepting the cross as part of being His disciple.  Today’s Gospel brings us that teaching, emphasized in Jesus’ own words: “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.”  No one enjoys carrying the cross, no matter what form it may take.  Yet we realize, as we grow in our faith, that it is often through the cross that we become stronger, deeper in our love, and more empathetic with the needs of others.  May the Lord enable all of us to accept the cross when it comes, knowing that He has the power to transform its weight a virtue that brings us closer to Him.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

The question that Jesus puts to His disciples today—“Who do you say that I am?”—is a question for everyone.  Anyone who even hears about Jesus Christ will need to make a decision about Him, even if it is simply passing Him off as a non-significant figure in human history.  We who know Him as Lord and Savior continue to pray that all people who look at Him and ask themselves the question: “Who do I say that He is?” If they ask this question with an open heart, and especially with prayer, they will eventually realize who He truly is.  And this realization will make all the difference in how they live, and how they look at life after death.

Thought for the Week – None of us has a “corner” on knowing Jesus.  In fact, each of us has a unique relationship with Him.  That means that we have much to learn from each other – not only those who have walked with the Lord for a long time, but also those for whom the good news is brand new.  So let’s be open to each other!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

At times, Jesus’ words and even His actions can be very difficult to understand.  Today’s Gospel encounter between Him and the woman is certainly one of those times.  The Lord seems to put her off, to not have the desire to heal her troubled daughter.  And His words, at least at the beginning, do not seem inviting or compassionate.  We may never know exactly why Jesus initially responded this way.  But the fact is that He did heal the woman’s daughter, and also commended her for her great faith.  Perhaps this can be a source of comfort and assurance for us the next time we face a situation in which God seems to be silent, or does not seem to be concerned with our needs.  Trusting Him at times requires a great patience and a tenacious faith.                     Father David

ADORATION AT SAINT JOHN’STuesday marks the first day of what we hope will be a monthly time of Adoration at Saint John’s Parish.  The Blessed Sacrament will be upon the altar from 4:30 – 6:30 pm, and again from 7:30 (after Mass) until 10:30 pm.  Adoration is a wonderful way to draw close to the Lord, and to come to know what He wants us to realize in our hearts.  Join us at any time during these hours.  And a special thanks to those who have signed up to take an hour for this effort!

A PRAYER FOR SUMMER……Dear God, creator of all, thank you for summer!  Thank you for the warmth of the sun and the increased daylight.  Thank you for the beauty we see all around us and for the opportunity to be outside and enjoy Your creation.  Thank you for the increased time we have to be with friends and family, and for the more casual pace of the summer season.  Draw us closer to You this summer.  Teach us how we can pray no matter where we are or what we are doing.  Warm our souls with the awareness of Your presence and light our path with Your Word and counsel.  As we enjoy Your creation, create in us a pure heart and a hunger and a thirst for You.     Amen.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

People often ask: how does God speak to us?  We don’t hear Him audibly, as we do another person.  Yet our faith tells us that, in some way, God does speak to His people.  One of the ways is found in today’s first reading where Elijah is searching and waiting for God’s voice.  The Lord spoke to Him, not in the wind or the earthquake or the fire, but in a “tiny whispering sound.”  This tells us that we need to listen with the inner ear of our heart, the inner sense of our mind.  God does indeed speak to us.  But unless we can withdraw at times from the often-loud and constant amount of noise around us, we may never hear that quiet, still voice that lives deep within our being.                           Father David

ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARYFriday, August 15th, is the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics.  Mass times will be on Thursday at 8:00 pm in Holy Cross, Friday morning at 8:00 in Holy Cross, and Friday evening at 8:00 in Saint John’s.  At Saint John’s there will also be a Rosary Procession, beginning at 7:00 pm, with decades being prayed at various stops in the church and on the parish grounds.  Do join us as we honor Mary’s Assumption, and as we praise God for what He has done through her for our salvation.

ADORATION……….A WONDERFUL WAY TO PRAYBoth of our parishes will now have a monthly time of Adoration, as Saint John’s will begin this on Tuesday, August 19th, from 4:30-10:30 pm.  Holy Cross has an evening time of Adoration, usually the 1st Thursday of the month, plus a Wednesday evening prayer group in the Adoration chapel.  There is a sign-up sheet at Saint John’s with some hours still looking for someone’s name.  Think about joining us for an hour that day as we honor the Lord, visibly present in His Holy Sacrament of the Altar.

NEW CUSTODIAN AT SAINT JOHN’SRuth Monson is now the new custodian at Saint John’s, also filling the position of contact person for use of the parish center.  Ruth’s phone number is 232-0300.  Welcome, Ruth!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

To heal the sick, to feed the hungry……these two corporal works of mercy are given to us by Jesus in today’s Gospel.  What He had done for others is what we are called to do, as far as we are able.  Granted, we may not have the power to work miracles as Jesus did (although He told us that with faith all things are possible), but we can certainly have the compassion for others that He always showed in His ministry.  The person I meet today is the one that God has placed in my path.  And this is the one that I am asked to bring Christ’s love to, in whatever way may be needed.  May we always have His compassion within us, especially for those who are not able to provide for their own needs.                Father David

SABBATICAL UPDATE……………WEDDINGS NEXT YEARI plan on being on a sabbatical (time away) next summer in June and July.  Those couples planning for marriage in 2015, please contact me early.  I want to make sure we have you prepared well ahead of time, and to also plan on who will be doing your wedding if it is planned for June or July.                 Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Jesus often speaks of the “kingdom of heaven” in His Gospel teachings.  Today He makes it clear that nothing else can be compared with the value of gaining that kingdom.  To put it more simply, He says to us that God and the salvation He offers are the most important realities that exist.  No other possession, no amount of fame or success, can compare with the prize of living with the Lord for all eternity.  Each of us can ask ourselves a question similar to this: is God and salvation the number one priority for me?  If not, what does that mean for a life of eternity after I die?                             Father David

SAINT JOHN’S YOUNG PEOPLE INVITEDNext Sunday, at the 10:45 am Mass, our children and youth from Saint John’s are invited to help lead us in the Introduction, Readings, Petitions and Gifts procession.  Practice for this will be Friday, August 1st, at 7:00 pm in the church.  Do join us!  It’s wonderful to see our young people take leadership in helping us worship God on the Lord’s Day!

RURAL LIFE LEADERS NEEDEDCatholic Charities in Saint Cloud is working with the National Rural Life Conference to seek out parish leaders who are interested in engaging parishioners in the work of social justice, evangelization and charity as part of a rural parish social ministry effort.  Kathy Langer and Doug Scott are heading up this effort in our diocese.  Training will be provided by them for those who are willing to become part of this outreach.  If you would like to see stronger social ministry in either of our parishes, please contact Father David at 468-2111.  This does take some commitment, but the reward will be a deeper ability for the parish to meet these needs among our people.

SPECIAL COLLECTION AT HOLY CROSSBirthline, the Crisis Pregnancy Center in Saint Cloud which helps mothers through difficult pregnancies, is asking help from parishes in our diocese.  Largely due to health care reform, Birthline has lost some significant funding and is asking for help from other places.  Holy Cross Parish Council voted to have a special collection for Birthline, and we will take this up on Sunday, August 3rd.  Any check can be made out to Holy Cross, with a memo line of “Birthline”.  I realize we have a lot of special collections, but hopefully we can sacrifice a little for a ministry whose main goal is to eventually have every child become a wanted child, with zero abortions taking place in this area.  A note: Saint John’s Parish Council voted at the last meeting to make a parish contribution for this need.                Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today’s parable of Jesus, describing the man who sowed seed on the land, is a wonderful illustration of human reactions to God’s Word.  Some people take in His Word, growing and bearing fruit for the Lord and His Church. Some others, for various reasons, do not let that Word affect their lives.  Jesus does speak about some of the fundamental things that can get in the way: the “evil one” (Satan) who can lure us away from the Lord; tribulation or persecution; worldly anxiety or the attraction of riches.  Any of these can lead us astray if we’re not careful.  May we ask God often in our prayers to give us the wisdom and courage to follow His way alone, and not be led astray by other false gods that promise much but deliver little.                             Father David

SABBATICAL UPDATE As mentioned previously, I hope to take a sabbatical next summer, from June 1st through about August 6th.  It looks like I will be staying in student housing at the College of Scholastica in Duluth during that time, so will be close enough to come back for any funerals that may occur.  Otherwise, Father Jerry Dalseth has agreed to take our weekend Masses, plus two of the three weekday Masses.  Father Bernie Kahlhamer will hopefully be able to take the other weekday Mass.  Just to note: those couples planning for marriage next year are encouraged to contact me early so we can look at dates and at who will witness their wedding.  Please call me at (320) 468-2111.                                Father David

ADORATION TO BEGIN AT SAINT JOHN’SWe are planning to start a monthly time of Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament at Saint John’s.  As of now, this devotion is scheduled to begin the 3rd Tuesday of August, the 19th, starting at 4:30 pm.  Adoration will continue until 6:30 pm, then resume after Mass at about 7:30 pm.  We then hope to continue the prayer time until 10:30 pm.  Volunteers are needed to commit for an hour at a time for this effort.  There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the entry at Saint John’s, and anyone—from any parish—is welcome to take an hour (or more).  Please consider signing up.  At least one person (preferably two or more) is needed for each hour, as the Blessed Sacrament can never be left unattended.  Father David will bring out the monstrance at the beginning, and then repose it at the end.  Again, we hope to establish this monthly devotion at Saint John’s, but do need willing, faithful people to sign up.  Note:  Holy Cross has a monthly Adoration, usually the 1st Thursday of the month, starting at 7:00 pm, and lasting until shortly before the 8:00 pm Mass.  Also, on Wednesday evenings, the prayer group at Holy Cross invites everyone to join them in the Adoration Chapel at 8:00 pm.  When Father David is able to be there, a time of Adoration is also held.

SCRIPTURE READINGS THIS WEEKToday: Isaiah 55:10-11; Romans 8:18-23; Matthew 13:1-23.  Next Sunday (July 20th): Wisdom 12:13,16-19; Romans 8:26-27; Matthew 13:24-43.

CD’S ON OUR CATHOLIC FAITHA reminder that both parishes have a CD display in the entry (Holy Cross) or just inside the back of church (Saint John’s) with many great CDs on the Catholic faith.  A $3.00 donation is asked if you’re able, but don’t let that prevent you from taking one and listening to it.  There are great topics available in the display.  Check them out and take some time to increase your knowledge of what it means to be Catholic.

MARIAN PRAYER SERVICE AT SAINT JOSEPH’SThe Knights of Columbus sponsor a traveling icon of the Immaculate Conception of Mary which comes to this area every so often.  This icon will be present at Saint Joseph’s Church in Pierz on Wednesday evening, July 23rd.  A prayer service will begin at 7:00 pm that night, and everyone is most welcome to attend.  We ask Mary’s intercession for ourselves, our communities and our country.  Please join us as we gather that evening, worshiping our Lord and honoring His Mother as our mother and model of faith.

POPE PAUL VI TO BE BEATIFIEDYou may have hear that on October 19th Pope Francis will beatify Pope Paul VI who led our Catholic Church from 1963-1978.  Beatification is the final step before canonization, when the Church declares an individual a saint.  We pray that this too will take place in the not-too-distant future for Pope Paul VI.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS  of our Pierz Area are helping sponsor a “Paint-A-Thon” on Saturday, July 26th.  Volunteers will be painting the house of Kay Voegtle in Pierz.  To help out, call Mark Fyten at 468-6722.
