FROM GRACE’S CORNER:                        EMAIL:  dembouski @brainerd.net                    PHONE NUMBER: 277-3832

WHERE’S THE LINE TO SEE JESUS?  Christmas time is approaching, snow is starting to fall, shoppers choosing their presents, people filling the mall.  Children waiting for Santa with excitement and glee, a little boy tugged my sweater, looked up and asked me, “Where’s the Line to see Jesus?”  As I stood in amazement at this message profound, I looked down to thank him, he was no where around.  A little boy at the mall might as well had wings, as the tears filled my eyes, I thought I heard him sing, “Where’s the Line to See Jesus?”  Is He here at the store?  If Christmas time is His birthday, why don’t we see Him more?  Where’s the Line to See Jesus?  He was born for us.  Santa Claus brought our presents, but Jesus gave His life for us.  In the blink of an eye, at the sound of His trumpet, we’ll all stand in line at His throne.  Every knee shall bow down.  Every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.  One day, we will all stand in line to see Jesus, Merry Christmas Everyone!

KEEP THESE THOUGHTS WITH YOU THROUGHOUT THE COMING YEAR OF 2016 – 1). If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it.  2). If He had a wallet, your photo would be in it.  3). He sends you flowers every spring and a sunrise every morning.  4). Whenever you want to talk, He’ll listen.  5). He could live anywhere in the universe, and He chose your heart.  6). What about the Christmas Gift He will sent you in Bethlehem, not to mention that Friday at Calvary.  Face it He really does love you.  And remember:  God Answers Knee-Mail!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – “Do you take Me as Lord of your life – for the rest of your life?  To love and honor Me all the days of 2016?”  “I do, Lord!”

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

When John the Baptist appeared, preparing the people for Jesus’ coming, he spoke much of justice and charity.  Our Advent preparation to celebrate the Lord’s birth brings these same words to us.  As we easily get caught up in the shopping, events and other things of this busy time, may we not forget to reach out to those who are in need of food, shelter or perhaps simply our time and care for them as they face their own challenges.                          Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

A prominent figure in our Advent  season is John the Baptist, the one chosen by God to prepare the way for Jesus.  John appears in today’s Gospel, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sin.  His message speaks to us as well.  We are asked during these weeks to receive the Lord once again into our lives.  And we are also asked to make an effort toward repentance, especially through the Sacrament of Penance.       Father David

HOLY DAY OF IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONTuesday, December 8, is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.  This special day speaks of Mary being conceived without Original Sin, being chosen by God to become the mother of His Son, Jesus Christ.  Please note that this is a Holy Day of Obligation.  Mass times will be Monday, 8:00 pm at Holy Cross, Tuesday, 8:00 am at Holy Cross, and Tuesday, 8:00 pm at St. John’s.

SACRAMENT OF PENANCE DURING ADVENTAs Catholics, we are encouraged to go to Confession sometime during the Season of Advent.  This is an important part of our preparation to mark the Lord’s birth.  In addition to the regular weekend times, Confessions this week will be on Saturday, 3:00 pm at St. John’s, and next Sunday (Dec. 13), 7:00 pm at Holy Cross.  Also, there will be a penance service next Sunday at St. Joseph’s in Pierz at 2:00 pm.  Extra priests will be available there for individual Confession.

ADORATION SIGN-UPOur monthly Adoration at St. John’s will be on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 4:30-10:00 pm.  With Confessions at 6:00 pm and Parish Council after the 7:00 Mass, there is more of a need for people to sign up for an hour.  Please consider if you are able to do this, and thanks for your help!

JANUARY PARISH MISSIONPlease pray for the upcoming Parish Mission taking place January 17-20.  Each of our four area parishes will host an evening, with Deacon Ralph Poyo being the presenter.  Plan to attend as we ask the Lord to renew our faith and trust in Him.  Each session will start at 7:00 pm.  Jan. 17 at St. Michael’s in Buckman, Jan. 18 at Holy Cross in Harding, Jan. 19 at St. John’s in Lastrup, Jan. 20 at St. Joseph’s in Pierz.

RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUSAging religious need our help.  Many sisters, brothers and religious order priests spent years working in Catholic school, hospitals and agencies, but receiving little pay.  Their communities are now left without adequate funds for their retirement and medical care.  Your gift to the Retirement Fund will help them live their last years with dignity.  Note: Holy Cross envelopes are in the packets; St. John’s will receive envelopes for this.

HOLY YEAR OF MERCYPope Francis has proclaimed a “Holy Year of Mercy” beginning this week on December 8th.  This is a time in which all Catholics are asked to promote healing, forgiveness and helping others.  Each month a “theme” will be suggested to guide our actions.  This month we are asked to “Shelter the Homeless” and to “Welcome the Stranger.”  These corporal works of mercy are especially appropriate at the beginning of winter.

FEELING GOD’S CALL TOWARD PRIESTHOOD?A “Day of Recollection” will be held this Saturday, Dec. 12 at the Speltz House, 308 3rd St. South in Sauk Rapids, for young men (high school and college) who sense God may be calling them to look into priesthood.  The day starts at 8:45 am and ends at 3:00 pm.  Please call Julie Jacobs at (320)251-5001, or email her at [email protected], to register.

FROM GRACE’S CORNER:                        EMAIL: [email protected]                  PHONE NUMBER:  277-3832

(Something to think about before Christmas) JESUS IS BETTER THAN SANTA – Santa lives at the North Pole, JESUS is everywhere.  Santa rides in a sleigh, JESUS rides on the wind and walks on the water.  Santa comes but once a year, JESUS is an ever present help.  Santa fills your stockings with goodies, JESUS supplies all your needs.  Santa comes down your chimney uninvited, JESUS stands at your door and knocks.  And then enters your heart.  You have to stand in line to see Santa, JESUS is as close as the mention of His name.  Santa lets you sit on his lap, JESUS lets you rest in His arms.  Santa doesn’t know your name, all he can say is “Hi little boy or girl, What’s your name?”, JESUS knew our name before we did.  Not only does He know our name, He knows our address too.  He knows our history and future and He even knows how many hairs are on our heads.  (I’ll continue this next weekend, I think this is enough for one week to think about).  *Remember, JESUS is the REASON for CHRISTMAS!

IT’S ALMOST JESUS’ BIRTHDAY – It’s almost Jesus’ Birthday…So let us not forget.  To give to Him the present, that He would like the best.  He doesn’t want a stocking…Hung upon the tree.  Or lots of toys or presents, like selfish you and me.  He only wants our Love for Him, to shine out to the earth.  He wants us to tell others, about His Miracle Birth.  He wants us to bring all we know, to Church to worship Him.  He wants us to remember…He died for all our sins.  Please focus on His Birthday…The sacrifice God made.  To send His Son to live and die, so we could all be saved.  This tiny Baby Jesus…Born in a lowly stall.  He came to bring salvation…To save us one and all.  This Christmas has more meaning…I’m calm and have such peace.  So let us bow before Him and worship at His feet.  The Church bells now are ringing, for you and I to bring…Our gifts of praise and worship…To Our Savior and Our King.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – A SMILE is like a light in the window of your face, telling everyone your home!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

We begin a new Church Year with this beautiful Season of Advent.  “Ad-Vent” means “to come,” reflecting the Gospel readings that speak of the two comings of Jesus Christ.  Interestingly, the beginning of Advent looks at His Second Coming.  Later we reflect on His first coming as a child in the stable at Bethlehem.  Every day, however, we pray that we are open to the coming of the Lord within our hearts.  May these days help us to receive Him deeply, with faith, hope and trust.                      Father David

BULLETIN ATTACHMENT……SACRAMENT OF PENANCEPlease note today’s Bulletin attachment, listing the times of Masses for Advent, Christmas and New Year’s day, as well as Confession times.  Take time to reflect and pray on how you can receive the Sacrament of Penance during this time.

YOUNG PEOPLE’S PRACTICE AND LEADERSHIPThe youth from both parishes are invited to take part in leading during the 10:45 Mass next Sunday at St. John’s.  Practice for this will be Friday, Dec. 4th, 7:00 pm at St. John’s.

LOOKING AHEAD: IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONDecember 8th is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, a Holy Day of Obligation.  Mass times will be 8:00 pm on Dec. 7th at Holy Cross; 8:00 am Dec. 8th at Holy Cross, and 8:00 pm Dec. 8th at St. John’s.

AREA PARISH MISSION IN JANUARYMark your calendars and plan to attend our 4-Parish Mission that will take place January 17-20.  Deacon Ralph Poyo who heads New Evangelization Ministries in Ohio, will be our presenter.  We ask the Lord to renew our faith through this experience, and to open hearts and minds to the message that we will hear.  Also: pray and consider if you are able to take a Pre-Mission training session to take place on Saturday, January 16 at St. Joseph’s in Pierz.  These participants will help lead small group gatherings taking place for six weeks after the mission.  This will help keep the spark going that we pray will be enkindled during the mission.

SCRIPTURE READINGS THIS WEEKToday: Jeremiah 33:14-16; I Thessalonians 3:12-4:2; Luke 21:25-28, 34-36.  Next Sunday: Baruch 5:1-9; Philippians 1:4-6, 8-11; Luke 3:1-6.

RESERVATION OF HOLY CROSS FACILITIESAny group or individual who wishes to rent or use the church basement or any other facility at Holy Cross Parish is asked to make this reservation at least 30 days before the event.  Call Leonard Thesing at 360-9720.

RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUSEach year we are asked to help our aging and retired religious who so often have inadequate savings for their older years.  This effort takes place Dec. 13 this year, and we are asked to be generous in assisting the many sisters, brothers and religious order priests who have made a positive difference in so many lives.  Holy Cross parishioners have an envelope in their packet.  St. John’s parishioners will receive an envelope on that day.

YEAR OF MERCYPope Francis has proclaim a “Year of Mercy” beginning December 8th and lasting until November 20, 2016.  This is a time in which Catholics are asked to promote healing, forgiveness and helping others.  One of the special efforts that will be made in our diocese is a “Festival of Forgiveness,” to be held March 4th.  This will entail a concerted effort throughout the diocese to encourage Catholics to receive the Sacrament of Penance.  More on that later……

A HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAY RECIPE – 2 cups of Love, 2 cups of Loyalty, 4 quarts of Faith, 5 spoons of Hope, 1 cup of Friendship, 1 barrel of Laughter, 2 spoons of Tenderness, 3 cups of Forgiveness, A touch of Understanding, 1 large Bunch of Smiles and 3 pints of Consideration for Others.  Take Love and Loyalty, mix thoroughly with Faith, blend with Tenderness, Forgiveness and Understanding.  Add Hope, Friendship and abundant Laughter.  Top freely with Smiles and Consideration for Others.  Bake with bright Sunshine, serve daily in generous helpings.   (Try this recipe over Thanksgiving and I know you will love it, because it never fails and by following the recipe closely it will turn out and it’ll be a keeper for your recipe box). It will take longer to make!

KIDS IN CHURCH – A Priest was visiting a classroom to give a talk to the children.  He asked the kids what Jesus said at the “Last Supper.”  One boy raised his hand, “This is my Body.”  “Very Good,” the Priest said.  “What about when Jesus was walking on water?”  Another girl raised her hand, “Be not afraid.”  “Excellent!”  The Priest continues, “Does anyone know what Jesus said at the Wedding Feast of Canna?”  After some time, one boy raises his hand and says, “Father, forgive them, they do not know what they are doing.”  (Kids are so precious, I work with them at Holy Trinity and they are part of my life – truly a Gift from God)!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK - As our world grows colder and darker during the winter months, why not do the right thing and light one candle in someone’s life each day.  A little bit of friendly light is all we really need!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

A central article of our faith is the knowledge that there will be a Second Coming of Jesus Christ.  As He states in today’s Gospel, “They will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.”  Through the centuries many have tried to predict when that day will be.  However, Jesus also says, “But of that day or hour, no one knows.”  Our challenge is to live in such a way that we are ready to meet the Lord, whether at our own death or at His Second Coming.         Father David

TUESDAY’S MASS IN THE MORNINGBecause of First Reconciliation taking place that evening at St. John’s, Mass on Tuesday will be at 8:00 a.m.

PRAYER ASKED FOR OUR CHILDRENPlease keep in your prayers our children from all four parishes will be receiving their First Reconciliation this week.  May they experience a deepening of their faith and knowledge of Jesus their Savior as they encounter Him in this sacrament of forgiveness and healing.

THANKSGIVING DAY MASSLooking ahead to Nov. 26th, Thanksgiving Day Mass will be 8:30 am at St. John’s.

4-PARISH MISSIONI know that all of us have our minds occupied a good deal with the upcoming days of Thanksgiving, Advent and Christmas, but I’d like to ask that we try to set aside the evenings of January 17-20 for a special Parish Mission event taking place in all four area parishes.  Deacon Ralph Poyo, who has a wide evangelization ministry, will be leading these evenings.  It’s a unique opportunity for renewing one’s Catholic faith.           Father David

CATHOLIC CHARITIES CAMPAIGNPlease take time to read the handout on Catholic Charities that was distributed today, and consider a donation to help this organization that does so much for those in need.  Note that 100% of all donations stay in central Minnesota.

ADORATION AT ST. JOHN’SThis monthly time of special prayer will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 24th, starting at 4:30 pm at St. John’s.  There is a sign-up sheet in the entry; your help in filling these hours is deeply appreciated!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

How much one “gives” to the Lord, or to another person, is not only measured by the amount of the gift, but also by the degree of sacrifice that gift entails.  The widow in today’s Gospel gave a small fraction of what the wealthy contributed to the treasury, but her degree of sacrifice was much greater.  When we give of our time, talent or treasure, we can ask ourselves if we’re giving only from our surplus, or if the gift truly requires a sacrifice on our part.                                Father David

PARISH MISSION FOR OUR AREAPlease mark your calendar for January 17-20, and plan to attend our 4-Parish Mission that will take place each of those evenings.  Each parish will take a turn hosting our speaker, Deacon Ralph Poyo: Sunday in Buckman, Monday in Harding, Tuesday in Lastrup and Wednesday in Pierz.  A central need right now is for people willing to attend a 6-hour training session on Saturday, January 16, 9:00-3:00 at St. Joseph’s in Pierz.  Those receiving this training will then facilitate small groups for a six-week follow-up after the mission.  This is to “keep the fire burning,” in Deacon Ralph’s words…..to keep the renewal going.  Please call Fr. SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today we mark the Solemnity of All Saints, a day in which we honor those that have attained eternal life with the Lord.  We ask them to pray for us as we continue our earthly journey, often enough challenged with pain, personal and family problems and other difficulties.  And we ask God’s help that we can progress toward sainthood, that we can become—in Jesus’ words of today’s Gospel—“poor in spirit”……”merciful”……”clean of heart”……those qualities that lead us to holiness.                Father David

ALL SOULS DAYMonday, November 2nd, is our observance of All Souls Day.  We, in our turn, are now asked to pray for those souls still in purgatory, trusting that the Lord will use our intentions to hasten their entry into heaven.  Join us, if you are able, at the 8:00 am Mass at St. John’s.

ALL SOULS’ DAY INDULGENCESAn “indulgence” is defined by the Church as a “remission before God of the temporal punishment for sin, the guilt of which is already forgiven” (Canon 992).  A “plenary” indulgence (all punishment remitted) can be gained on Nov. 1st or 2nd with the following conditions: 1) a visit to a church or public oratory, 2) praying the Lord’s Prayer and the Creed during this visit, 3) doing the following within a week before or after the visit: Sacrament of Penance, Holy Communion, prayer for the Pope.  It’s also necessary that any attachment to sin, even venial, be absent.  For a more in-depth description of this indulgence, please read the Visitor of Oct. 23rd, p.11.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MEMORIAL MASSAnyone is welcome to attend the annual Knights of Columbus Memorial Mass, celebrated Wednesday at 7:30 pm at St. John’s.  Those Knights who have died this past year will be recognized and prayed for.  Family members of these deceased are especially welcome to join us.

23rd, p.11.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

The blind man in today’s Gospel teaches us a couple of valuable lessons.  First, simply coming to Jesus speaks of his faith that the Lord has the power for physical healing.  This may not happen all the time, but we still go to the Lord when this is our need.  Secondly, “blindness” can be as much spiritual as it is physical.  The prayer of Bartimaeus, “Master, I want to see,” can be our prayer as we ask Jesus to heal our hearts and spirits.                Father David

ALL SAINTS DAYWith this holy day falling on a Sunday this year (next Sunday), the Mass schedule will be the usual weekend times.  Saturday, 8 pm at St. John’s, 8:45 am at Holy Cross and 10:45 am at St. John’s.

CLOCKS BACK NEXT WEEKENDDaylight Savings Time ends next Sunday, Nov. 1.  Turn your clocks back one hour Saturday night.

WOULD YOU BE WILLING? – We are looking for 5-10 people from each parish who are willing to participate in a day of training prior to our 4-parish mission of January 17-20.  Deacon Ralph Poyo, who is leading this mission, is asking for people who can facilitate small group meetings for about six weeks after the mission, to keep the renewal going in our parishes.  Deacon Ralph will train these facilitators on Saturday, January 16, 9:00-3:00 at St. Joseph’s in Pierz.  Please consider whether the Lord might be calling you to this much-needed ministry, and call Fr. David at 468-2111.  Trust that the Lord will enable you to fulfill what He calls you to!
