SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

A very basic foundation of our Christian faith is our belief in the resurrection.  In today’s Gospel, Jesus outlines this reality for the Sadducees, explaining to them that even in the days of Moses there was a fundamental belief that those who died in God’s grace would rise again.  And we know that Jesus, by His own resurrection, has conquered death and made it possible for us to also rise to new life.  May this assurance give all of us hope and faith as we travel this earthly journey of joy and sorrow, of struggle and promise.                             Father David

WELCOME BISHOP KETTLERLast Thursday we witnessed the installation of our new Bishop, Donald Kettler, as leader of the Saint Cloud Diocese.  We welcome him to central Minnesota, and may all of us give him our prayer and support as he begins his ministry to Catholics and others, here and beyond.                           Father David

HOLY CROSS PARISH DIRECTORYA special thanks to those Holy Cross parishioners who have already signed up for picture-taking November 25-27, and a reminder to others to please sign up as soon as you can.  Our directory won’t be complete without you, plus you will receive—free—a directory and an 8” x 10” portrait just for signing up.  Please visit the sign-up table in the entry before or after Mass on Sunday.  You can also go online to our website at hardingchurch.org.  If none of the times on November 25-27 (2-9 pm) work for you, you can look into having your picture taken at Saint Joseph’s in Pierz the week before.  They are getting a new directory organized, and have a couple of picture-taking sessions still scheduled: November 22 from 2-9 pm, and November 23 from 10:00 am-5:00 pm.  Please call Billie Kimman at 468-6550 to arrange this.  Finally, those who are members of ministry groups in the parish, such as Ushers, Servers, Lectors, Communion Ministers, Choirs, etc., please note that group pictures will be taken Sunday, November 24 after Mass.  Plan to be there for that session.

COMMUNION FOR THOSE WITH SPECIAL NEEDSIf you are unable to come forward at Mass to receive Holy Communion, please let Father David or an Usher know.  We will be glad to bring you the Body of Christ to where you are in church.  Also, for those who are homebound, please let us know that you are unable to come to church.  A Communion Minister or Father David will be glad to bring the Eucharist to you.

ECUMENICAL THANKSGIVING SERVICEThis year’s Community Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service will be held at Saint John’s in Lastrup, Monday, November 25th at 7:00 pm.  Everyone is invited to take part in this festival of prayer, thanks, song and Scripture.  A reception will follow in the parish center.

POPE FRANCIS AND THE YEAR OF FAITHIn a homily on May 5th, Pope Francis stated: “May you also be true evangelizers!  May your initiatives be ‘bridges’, means of bringing others to Christ, so as to journey together with Him.  And in this spirit may you always be attentive to charity.  Each individual Christian and every community is missionary to the extent that they bring to others and live the Gospel, and testify to God’s love for all, especially those experiencing difficulties.”  (Columbia, June 2013, p.16)

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today’s Gospel speaks about the encounter of Zacchaeus, a tax collector, with Jesus.  And this was an encounter that would change the life Zacchaeu forever.  We hear about the joy that he experienced when Jesus asked to stay at this house, and of the changes he made in his treatment of other people.  It’s worth noting that all of this began with a simple desire that he had to see Jesus.  Just that basic thing was enough to set in motion a series of events that would bring Zaccaehus into salvation.  We can ask ourselves a fundamental question: Do I have a desire to “see” Jesus, to encounter Him?  With that simple hope in place, He will meet me more than halfway and lead me to a fulfilling relationship with Himself.                   Father David

POPE FRANCIS AND THE YEAR OF FAITH:

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

One of the most often-quoted teachings of Jesus that we hear comes from today’s Gospel: “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”  Humility is a beautiful virtue, and the example of the tax collector shows us two basic foundations of that virtue.  First, we need to recognize and admit our sins.  And second, we need to acknowledge that God is the one who can forgive us and heal what sin does.  It’s true that humility is not necessarily connected with sin all the time.  Yet, so often it’s some kind of sin that leads us into pride……or vice versa.  A proud, self-centered way of life easily provides an opening for sin to enter in, and can also prevent us from recognizing sin for what it is.               Father David

ALL SAINTS DAT…..HOLY DAY OF OBLIZATION:

Friday, November 1st, is the Solemnity of All Saints.  This is one of the Holy Days of Obligation in which Catholics are asked to attend Mass, both to receive what the Lord wants to give, and as a way of making the day truly one of holiness.  Mass times will be Thursday, October 31st, 8:00 pm at Holy Cross; then, Friday, November 1st, 8:00 am at Holy Cross, and 7:30 pm at Saint John’s.  Join us as we celebrate what God has done in the lives of the saints, and as we ask His help in becoming saints ourselves.   Father David

HAPPY HALLOWEEN – From one Pumpkin to another!!!  A woman was asked by a co-worker, “What is it like to be a Christian?”  The co-worker replied, “It is like being a pumpkin.”  God picks you from the patch, brings you in and washes all the dirt off of you.  Then He cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff.  He removes the seeds of doubt, hate and greed.  Then He carves you a new joyful smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for all the world to see.  This was passed on to me by another pumpkin.  Now it’s your turn to pass it to other pumpkins.  I liked this enough to send it to all the Pumpkins in my Patch.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

The word “persistence” comes to mind when we reflect on today’s Gospel.  Jesus uses the story about the widow and the judge to encourage us to pray always and not to lose heart.  To say that this is challenging is putting it mildly.  How many of us have felt at times that our prayers were not being answered, that God seemed to be absent, that all our efforts were not producing any results.  And we may have wondered: why bother?  Well, perhaps a first thing to remember about prayer is that it’s not so much for “getting something” as it is for letting God change us.  The primary reason we pray is to deepen a personal relationship with the Lord, believing that His love will then make everything work out for our good, no matter how hard it is to see that at times.    Fr. David

PARISH VIBRANCY TOOL MEETINGS:

Parish Council members are reminded of the Parish Vibrancy Tool evaluation meetings with Deacon Mark Barder on Tuesday, October 29th.  The meeting for Holy Cross will be at 6:00 pm, and for Saint John’s at 7:00 pm.  Note: Mass on that Tuesday at Saint John’s will be at 8:00 am.

HOLY CROSS PICTORIAL DIRECTORY:

We’re looking forward to having a new pictorial directory published for Holy Cross.  All parishioners are encouraged to sign up when contacted about having pictures taken, which will happen November 25-27.  Also, if you can volunteer to help in any way, please contact Janet Hanneken at 745-2641 or Father David at 468-2111.  And a couple of things to note: first, every household or individual that has a picture taken will receive a free 8” x 10” portrait and a free directory.  Second, the company will then offer other pictures for sale.  Please note that you are under no obligation to buy anything; that choice is strictly up to you.  Be sure you are aware of the price package before you purchase anything.

POPE FRANCIS AND THE YEAR OF FAITH:

In a message to the world last Easter, Pope Francis stated: “This is the invitation which I address to everyone: Let us accept the grace of Christ’s resurrection!  Let us be renewed by God’s mercy; let us be loved by Jesus; let us enable the power of His love to transform our lives too; and let us become agents of this mercy, channels through which God can water the earth, protect all creation and make justice and peace flourish.”  (Columbia, June 2013, p.15)

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Perhaps the most obvious thing we learn from the healings Jesus performs in the Gospel is that He has God’s power to do this.  And this leads us to the conclusion that Jesus is God: He is God-With-Us in human flesh, the One we know as Jesus Christ.  Then, specifically from today’s incident with the ten lepers, we learn that faith leads to salvation.  This one leper—as the other nine—was healed by Jesus’ power.  But his gratitude led him deeper into faith, and by that faith he was assured of his own salvation. Fr. David

THANK YOU:

To all of you who have given prayer, sent cards and offered to help these past days, a very special thanks!  I’m gradually starting to get better since my fall on October. 4th.                Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

At first glance, faith and service may not seem to be that closely related.  Yet, in today’s Gospel, Jesus puts them side by side.  And I think we can see, after some reflection, that our faith in the Lord needs to be a companion of service to others.  Even more so, our faith in God is deepened as we serve the needs of others, especially those who are struggling the most.  Perhaps that is so because when we help another person we are being like Jesus Himself, and we are actually serving Him in that person.  Recall the words Jesus spoke at the end of Matthew’s Gospel, when He was describing the Last Judgment scene: “I assure you, as often as you did it for one of my least brothers, you did it for Me.”       Father David

BIBLE HUMOR FROM OUR LITTLE SPROUTS…ALL MEN/ALL GIRLS – When my daughter, Kelli, said bedtime prayers, she would bless every family member, every friend, and every animal (current and past).  For several weeks, after we had finished the nightly prayers, Kelli would say, ‘And all girls.’  My curiosity got the best of me and I asked her, “Kelli, why do you always add the part about all girls?”  Her response, “Because everybody always finish their prayers by saying, ‘All Men!’”

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Jesus’ story of the rich man and Lazarus gives us a dramatic illustration of how blind one can become to the needs of another.  Whatever caused the rich man to become so hardened ended up taking over his entire life, and led to his eternal loss.  It’s a sober warning to all of us that it’s possible to become like him.  If we turn away from those in need, if we don’t notice the person in front of us looking for help, our lives can become callous and closed.  We need to always remember the one Last Judgment scene that Jesus described (Matthew’s Gospel): “As often as you neglected to do it to one of these least ones, you neglected to do it to Me.”

                                                                                                                                                                                                Father David

WELCOME, BISHOP KETTLER!

We rejoice that the Lord has given the Saint Cloud Diocese a new shepherd to succeed Bishop John Kinney who is now retiring.  Bishop Donald Kettler comes to us from the Diocese of Fairbanks, AK.  However, he is no stranger to Minnesota.  He was born in Minneapolis and has schooling experience from both Saint John’s in Collegeville and from the Crosiers in Onamia.  We welcome him to our diocese and look forward to meeting him whenever that will be possible.  And let us pray for him that God’s guidance and strength will be his in a special way!        Father David

PRIEST CONFERENCE OCTOBER 6-9:

Virtually all of us priests in the diocese will be at our annual workshop in Alexandria October 6-9, so there will be no weekday Masses on Tuesday or Wednesday of that week.  In case of emergency the phone number at the Arrowwood Resort is (320)762-1124.                   Father David

40 DAYS FOR LIFE:

POPE FRANCIS AND THE YEAR OF FAITH:

In an address on March 22, Pope Francis stated: “Francis of Assisi tells us we should work to build peace.  Bur there is no true peace without truth!  There cannot be true peace if everyone is his own criterion, if everyone can always claim exclusively his own right, without at the same time caring for the good of others, of everyone, on the basis of the nature that unites every human being on this earth.”  (Columbia, June 2013, p.15).  Note: the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi is October 4th.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

“No servant can serve two masters.”  With these words, Jesus places in front of us a basic decision that every human being—at least as an adult—needs to grapple with.  And it’s not a decision that can be made quickly or easily.  On the one hand, we “serve” a lot of other people and even certain things in our lives.  We serve the government (maybe not always willingly), we serve our employers, our family members and many others.  But on the other hand, Jesus is asking us: Who or what is your final “master”?  To whom or to what do you really entrust your life?  This makes us realize that, when all is said and done, God alone is our one master.  He will be the only one to whom we will give a final accounting when we leave this earthly dwelling.  Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

The lost sheep……the lost coin……the Prodigal Son: we might ask what all of these have in common in today’s Gospel.  Jesus tells these parables to those who felt He was out of place in welcoming sinners and eating with them.  And it’s precisely that which shows the wonderful, constant mercy that our God—in Jesus Christ—has for all of us.  None of us can claim to be free from sin.  Even the saints realized their weaknesses and how they were unfaithful to God at times.  But they also knew, beyond a doubt, that God’s love and forgiveness would triumph over their sin.  We need that same conviction inside our own hearts.  When our struggle with sin drags us down, may we remember that Jesus came into this world not for the righteous, but to save sinners.          Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Becoming a disciple of Jesus is not a decision that is made lightly.  Today’s Gospel make it clear that being His follower means to prefer nothing else to Him, whether that be family, possessions or anything else that is dear to us.  And to live in this way means to accept the cross.  Not an attractive image, yet we are asked to believe that this cross will eventually bring us a joy that no earthly person or thing can match.  These words are not difficult to write down and speak about.  Living them is another matter.  As we are told in other parts of Scripture, there is a death to self that is necessary if we are to become true disciples.  May the Lord give us that kind of faith and courage, that we might give our lives in a true surrender to His love, guidance and gift of eternal life.   Father David

LITTLE HUMOR…A little 3-year-old boy was having a meal one evening.  After everyone finished praying, he said, “Grandma, I only prayed halfway.”  “What do you mean?” I asked.  “I only had one eye closed,” he answered.

BEST MEDICATION FOR THE DAY – Every morning, take a full glass of Gratitude.  When getting to work, take one spoon of Peace.  Every hour, take one pill of Patience, one cup of Brotherhood and one glass of Humility.  When getting home, take one dose of Love.  When getting to bed, take two caplets of Clear Conscience.

ONE FOR OUR DEDICATED FARMERS – MISSED SIGNALS…Said the Preacher to the Farmer: “Do you belong to a Christian family?”  Farmer: “No, I live two farms down the road.”  Preacher: “No, I mean, are you lost?”  Farmer: “No, I’ve been here 30 years.”  Preacher: “I mean, are you ready for Judgment Day?”  Farmer: “When is it?”  Preacher: “Could be today, could be tomorrow.”  Farmer: “When you find out for sure, let me know.  The wife will probably want to go both days.”

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – People are funny; they want the front of the bus, middle of the road, and back of the Church.
