SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

A blessed happy New Year!  No, I haven’t missed a month on the calendar.  Rather, today—the First Sunday of Advent—is the beginning of a new Church Year.  Once again we enter this special time in which we meditate on the Lord’s coming to us: both His first coming as a child in Bethlehem, and His second, which will happen at the end of time.  Today’s Gospel gives us some of Jesus’ words on this, emphasizing that we always need to be prepared.  Both Jesus and St. Paul, in the Second Reading, speak of the importance of living in the here and now.  Our call is to be faithful to the Lord, moment by moment, day by day.  He will take care of His Second Coming in His own time.                Father David

SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTIONThis year December 8th falls on a Sunday, which will move the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception to the following day, Monday, December 9th.  Because of this, the obligation to attend Mass is lifted.  However, all Catholics are strongly encouraged to attend Mass, if able to do so.  Masses on December 9th will be at 8:00 am at Holy Cross and 7:30 pm at Saint John’s.

PARISH BREAKFAST TODAY (SUNDAY) AT SAINT JOHN’SEveryone is invited to the parish breakfast today at Saint John’s.  Serving takes place from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.

PARISH LIAISONS TO DIOCESAN PASTORAL COUNCILThe Saint Cloud is divided into a number of “deaneries” which include parishes located fairly close to each other.   Lastrup and Harding are part of the Little Falls Deanery.  Each deanery has a representative to the “Pastoral Council” of the diocese.  This council brings parish concerns to the Bishop from these representatives.  The rep from the Little Falls Deanery is Darrell Welle of Holy Family Parish in Belle Prairie.  Darrell has asked our parishes to have a liaison person that he would communicate with as far as parish concerns to bring to the Bishop.  The liaisons from our parishes are Dale Beierman of Saint John’s and Phyllis Schmidtbauer of Holy Cross.  Parishioners are welcome to call them if they have concerns that they think should go to the Pastoral Council.  Dale’s phone is 468-6225 and Phyllis’ phone is 277-3869.

OUR LADY OF GUADALUPE CELEBRATIONA special Mass in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe will take place Sunday, December 15th at Saint John’s Abbey Church in Collegeville.  Mass begins at 2:00 pm, with Bishop Kettler presiding.  The special intention of this Mass is to pray for all immigrants and for a just reformation of the immigration laws in the United States.  Following Mass, a reception will be held in Guild Hall with Latino cuisine and entertainment.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.  It’s a fitting way to close the Church Year, and a clear reminder to us that ultimately Jesus will be recognized as the only ruler and Savior of all people.  Ironically, the Gospel today presents Him being crucified…..hardly the picture of a triumphant king.  But it was through His death and resurrection that He has become the head of the Church, the fullness of all things, as our Second Reading shows.  May we always acknowledge Him as our King and Lord.  And may we ever be faithful to Him who has been so faithful and loving toward us!    Father David

THANKSGIVING SERVICEEveryone is invited to the annual Ecumenical Community Thanksgiving Service to be held Monday evening, 7:00 pm at Saint John’s.  It’s a wonderful time to join our area brothers and sisters in giving thanks to God with song, prayer, Scripture and fellowship.  A reception will follow in the parish hall.  And, a special thanks to those who have organized the service and reception, especially Joyce Weiss and choir members, Kathy Tax and others who are helping with the reception.

HOLY CROSS PICTORIAL DIRECTORYPicture-taking will be held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 2-9 pm, in Holy Cross Church basement as we continue to organize our new pictorial directory.  And, to note that we now have Saturday, November 30th as an added day for pictures.  Our sign-up has been wonderful, necessitating an extra day for photos.  Our special thanks to Janet Hanneken, Doug Knopik and Yvonne Kisor for their hard work in organizing things.  Remember: you receive a free directory and an 8” x 10” portrait just for having your photo taken!

SPECIAL COLLECTIONSA special thanks to all of you as we continue to ask your generosity for special needs in the Church and the world.  Today’s collection for the Military Archdiocese will help many of our military personnel to keep their faith growing, especially with a shortage of chaplains.  Next week we are asked to contribute to another special collection—taken after Communion—to help the people of the Philippines recover from the typhoon tragedy.  May God bless you for your sacrifice for those less fortunate than ourselves.  P.S. Any check for the Philippines can be made out to the parish and marked “Typhoon Relief.”

THANKS FROM MISSION OFFICEThe Saint Cloud Mission Office sends their gratitude to us for our contributions for World Mission Sunday: “Thank you for your parish’s generous contribution to World Mission Sunday.  We appreciate all the energy and effort that you put forth in the promotion of this global connection of solidarity.”

CLOSING OF THE “YEAR OF FAITH”Today—November 24th—marks the closing of the special “Year of Faith” that Pope Benedict called for in 2013.  Each one of us can ask ourselves how we have tried to deepen our Catholic faith during this time, and how we will continue to grow in the days to come.  Perhaps this is a good time to recall the basic suggestions given to us in the September 28, 2013 issue of the The Visitor: 1) Participate in Mass,  2) Go to Confession,  3) Learn about the saints,  4) Read the Bible,  5) Read the Vatican II documents,  6) Study the Catechism of the Catholic Church,  7) Volunteer in your parish,  8) Help those in need,  9) Invite a friend to Mass,  10) Incorporate the Beatitudes into your daily life.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

The Second Coming of Jesus has been part of our faith belief since He first began teaching His disciples.  And it has been an object of interest, even of fascination, ever since.  It goes without saying that many, many people have tried to predict the day of His coming through the centuries, with every prediction—obviously—not turning out so far.  It needs to be stressed that Jesus wants us to be more concerned about how we live our day-to-day life.  Whether He comes in our lifetime, or on some day far in the future, is not our main concern.  What we need to prepare for is that day when we will leave this earth.  That, for us personally, is the “Second Coming” that is of greater concern.                                Father David

FIRST RECONCILIATIONWe’re asked to keep in prayer our children who will receive the Sacrament of Penance for the first time on Tuesday.  Parent’s, please note the 6:30 pm starting time at Saint John’s, and that this is for both Saint John’s and Holy Cross families.  May God bless each of our students with a deep sense of His love and forgiveness through this very special sacrament!

HOLY CROSS PICTORIAL DIRECTORYA special word of thanks to those who have already signed up for the directory picture-taking November 25-27!  And if you haven’t signed up yet, please do so.  Our parish directory just won’t be complete without you.  You can sign up before or after the Sunday Mass, at the table in the entry.  You can also go online at hardingchurch.org.  And if you have questions, please call Janet Hanneken at 745-2641.  As of this writing, we’re not sure if we may need to get another picture-taking date, as the sign-up has been wonderful so far.  Announcements will be made in church about that, and also about whether Saint Joseph’s in Pierz has some slots open November 22 and 23 with their picture-taking.  Remember, you will receive a free directory and a free 8” x 10” portrait just for signing up.  And if you’re a member of a parish group or ministry, please plan to be part of the group pictures taken next Sunday, November 24th, after our 8:45 am Mass.

THANKSGIVING DAY MASS- Looking ahead, Mass on Thanksgiving Day, November 28th, will be at 8:30 am at Saint John’s.

SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR U.S. MILITARY ARCHDIOCESEQuite recently our U.S. Bishops made the decision that every 3 years parishes would be asked to take up a special collection to help our men and women who serve our country in the U.S. Military.  This is the first year that our Saint Cloud Diocese parishes are being asked to contribute.  The Archdiocese for the Military Services oversees these funds, which go especially toward providing our deployed men and women with the sacraments and spiritual support.  Please consider using the envelope that will be attached to next week’s Bulletin.  Your offering will be sent to our Chancery Office, which will then forward it to the Military Archdiocese.  And thank you for your generosity in the face of a large number of special collections.  Your sacrifice is deeply appreciated!

HUMOR FROM OUR LITTLE TYKES – A church in town was scheduled to have a food fellowship after the Sunday services.  When the Pastor got up to the pulpit, he joked, “I don’t smell the food, so I can preach as long as I need to.”  About halfway through his sermon, a little tyke leaned to his mother and whispered loudly, “I smell food.  Is church over?”

A little 3-year-old boy was having a meal one evening.  After everyone finished praying, he said, “Grandma, I only prayed halfway.”  “What do you mean?”  I asked.  “I only had one eye closed,” he answered.

THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD – A Sunday School teacher decided to have her young class memorize one of the most quoted passages in the Bible – Psalm 23.  She gave the youngsters a month to learn the chapter.  Little Rick was excited about the task – but he just couldn’t remember the Psalm…After much practice, he could barely get past the first line.  One day that the kids were scheduled to recite Psalm 23 in front of the congregation, Ricky was so nervous.  When it was his turn, he stepped up to the microphone and said proudly, ‘The Lord is my Shepherd, and that’s all I need to know.’

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

A very basic foundation of our Christian faith is our belief in the resurrection.  In today’s Gospel, Jesus outlines this reality for the Sadducees, explaining to them that even in the days of Moses there was a fundamental belief that those who died in God’s grace would rise again.  And we know that Jesus, by His own resurrection, has conquered death and made it possible for us to also rise to new life.  May this assurance give all of us hope and faith as we travel this earthly journey of joy and sorrow, of struggle and promise.                             Father David

WELCOME BISHOP KETTLERLast Thursday we witnessed the installation of our new Bishop, Donald Kettler, as leader of the Saint Cloud Diocese.  We welcome him to central Minnesota, and may all of us give him our prayer and support as he begins his ministry to Catholics and others, here and beyond.                           Father David

POPE FRANCIS AND THE YEAR OF FAITHIn a homily on May 5th, Pope Francis stated: “May you also be true evangelizers!  May your initiatives be ‘bridges’, means of bringing others to Christ, so as to journey together with Him.  And in this spirit may you always be attentive to charity.  Each individual Christian and every community is missionary to the extent that they bring to others and live the Gospel, and testify to God’s love for all, especially those experiencing difficulties.”  (Columbia, June 2013, p.16)

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today’s Gospel speaks about the encounter of Zacchaeus, a tax collector, with Jesus.  And this was an encounter that would change the life Zacchaeu forever.  We hear about the joy that he experienced when Jesus asked to stay at this house, and of the changes he made in his treatment of other people.  It’s worth noting that all of this began with a simple desire that he had to see Jesus.  Just that basic thing was enough to set in motion a series of events that would bring Zaccaehus into salvation.  We can ask ourselves a fundamental question: Do I have a desire to “see” Jesus, to encounter Him?  With that simple hope in place, He will meet me more than halfway and lead me to a fulfilling relationship with Himself.                   Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

One of the most often-quoted teachings of Jesus that we hear comes from today’s Gospel: “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”  Humility is a beautiful virtue, and the example of the tax collector shows us two basic foundations of that virtue.  First, we need to recognize and admit our sins.  And second, we need to acknowledge that God is the one who can forgive us and heal what sin does.  It’s true that humility is not necessarily connected with sin all the time.  Yet, so often it’s some kind of sin that leads us into pride……or vice versa.  A proud, self-centered way of life easily provides an opening for sin to enter in, and can also prevent us from recognizing sin for what it is.               Father David

ALL SAINTS DAT…..HOLY DAY OF OBLIZATION:

Friday, November 1st, is the Solemnity of All Saints.  This is one of the Holy Days of Obligation in which Catholics are asked to attend Mass, both to receive what the Lord wants to give, and as a way of making the day truly one of holiness.  Mass times will be Thursday, October 31st, 8:00 pm at Holy Cross; then, Friday, November 1st, 8:00 am at Holy Cross, and 7:30 pm at Saint John’s.  Join us as we celebrate what God has done in the lives of the saints, and as we ask His help in becoming saints ourselves.   Father David

ALL SOULS DAY AND INDULGENCES:

Please check the Visitor from this past week for information regarding All Souls Day and Indulgences.

TUESDAY’S MASS IN THE MORNING:

A reminder that Tuesday’s Mass at Saint John’s this week will be 8:00 am.  This is due to the Parish Vibrancy Tool meetings in both parishes that evening.  Note: Parish Council members of both parishes are reminded of our meeting with Deacon Mark Barder Tuesday evening to look at the Vibrancy Tool results.  Holy Cross will meet with him at 6:00 pm in the church basement, and Saint John’s members meet with him at 7:00 pm in the rectory.

HOLY CROSS PARISH DIRECTORY:

Work has begun in preparation for a new pictorial directory for Holy Cross.  The picture-taking is scheduled for November 25-27.  A special thanks to Janet Hanneken for being willing to coordinate volunteers for this effort.  Please call Janet at 320-745-2641 or Father David at 468-2111, if you can help as a volunteer.

Bishop Donald Kettler will be installed as the 9th bishop of the Saint Cloud Diocese on Thursday, November 7th.  Because of limited seating capacity, the Mass of Installation at 2:00 pm at Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Saint Cloud is by invitation only.  However, the public is invited to two other related events: Solemn Vespers at the Cathedral on Wednesday, November 6th, 7:30 pm (a special prayer service prior to the next day’s installation), and a reception following the Mass of Installation on November 7th, lasting until 6:00 pm, at Saint Paul’s Church, 1125 – 11th Avenue North, Saint Cloud.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN – From one Pumpkin to another!!!  A woman was asked by a co-worker, “What is it like to be a Christian?”  The co-worker replied, “It is like being a pumpkin.”  God picks you from the patch, brings you in and washes all the dirt off of you.  Then He cuts off the top and scoops out all the yucky stuff.  He removes the seeds of doubt, hate and greed.  Then He carves you a new joyful smiling face and puts His light inside of you to shine for all the world to see.  This was passed on to me by another pumpkin.  Now it’s your turn to pass it to other pumpkins.  I liked this enough to send it to all the Pumpkins in my Patch.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

The word “persistence” comes to mind when we reflect on today’s Gospel.  Jesus uses the story about the widow and the judge to encourage us to pray always and not to lose heart.  To say that this is challenging is putting it mildly.  How many of us have felt at times that our prayers were not being answered, that God seemed to be absent, that all our efforts were not producing any results.  And we may have wondered: why bother?  Well, perhaps a first thing to remember about prayer is that it’s not so much for “getting something” as it is for letting God change us.  The primary reason we pray is to deepen a personal relationship with the Lord, believing that His love will then make everything work out for our good, no matter how hard it is to see that at times.    Fr. David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Perhaps the most obvious thing we learn from the healings Jesus performs in the Gospel is that He has God’s power to do this.  And this leads us to the conclusion that Jesus is God: He is God-With-Us in human flesh, the One we know as Jesus Christ.  Then, specifically from today’s incident with the ten lepers, we learn that faith leads to salvation.  This one leper—as the other nine—was healed by Jesus’ power.  But his gratitude led him deeper into faith, and by that faith he was assured of his own salvation. Fr. David

THANK YOU:

To all of you who have given prayer, sent cards and offered to help these past days, a very special thanks!  I’m gradually starting to get better since my fall on October. 4th.                Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

At first glance, faith and service may not seem to be that closely related.  Yet, in today’s Gospel, Jesus puts them side by side.  And I think we can see, after some reflection, that our faith in the Lord needs to be a companion of service to others.  Even more so, our faith in God is deepened as we serve the needs of others, especially those who are struggling the most.  Perhaps that is so because when we help another person we are being like Jesus Himself, and we are actually serving Him in that person.  Recall the words Jesus spoke at the end of Matthew’s Gospel, when He was describing the Last Judgment scene: “I assure you, as often as you did it for one of my least brothers, you did it for Me.”       Father David

BIBLE HUMOR FROM OUR LITTLE SPROUTS…ALL MEN/ALL GIRLS – When my daughter, Kelli, said bedtime prayers, she would bless every family member, every friend, and every animal (current and past).  For several weeks, after we had finished the nightly prayers, Kelli would say, ‘And all girls.’  My curiosity got the best of me and I asked her, “Kelli, why do you always add the part about all girls?”  Her response, “Because everybody always finish their prayers by saying, ‘All Men!’”

PRAYERS FOR FATHER DAVID – Please keep Father David in your prayers, as he had a little injury last night, maybe our prayers will ease the pain for him. Take care of yourself, Father David – please feel free to call on someone if you need help! God Bless You!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

POPE FRANCIS AND THE YEAR OF FAITH:

In an address to young people on April 28th, Pope Francis said: “Pay attention, my young friends, to go against the current.  This is good for the heart, but we need courage to swim against the tide…..we Christians were not chosen by the Lord for little things; push onward toward the highest principles.  Stake your lives on noble ideals, my dear young people.”  (Columbia, June 2013, p.17)
