SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

At first glance, today’s Gospel seems to have two rather separate emphases.  Following the commandments and dealing with wealth may not seem to be that close initially, but there is a basic truth connects them together.  The more we have, especially possessions, the less our hearts are inclined to center on the Lord.  And without that centering, following His commandments becomes more difficult.  Jesus knows that we will ultimately choose to make God our God, or make something else our god.        Father David

ST. JOHN’S MEMORIAL MASS NEXT SUNDAYEveryone is welcome to join us in commemorating our deceased loved ones at the 10:45 Mass at St. John’s on October 18.  LaVerne and the Starlites will be providing the music, and a potluck lunch will follow at the parish center.

SCRIPTURE READINGS THIS WEEKToday:  Wisdom 7:7-11; Hebrews 4:12-13; Mark 10:17-30.  Next Sunday:  Isaiah 53:10-11; Hebrews 4:14-16; Mark 10:35-45.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

This first Sunday of October has come to be known as “Pro-Life Sunday” in the Catholic Church.  It’s a day to deepen our awareness of the challenge we face in restoring protection to the unborn, as well as other vulnerable lives, such as the elderly, those with special needs and those who may be tempted toward “assisted suicide.”  With all its pain and struggle, life is still the most precious gift God gives to us: both this life on earth and the eternal salvation that Jesus makes possible with His death on the cross.  May we always uphold the right to life, from conception until natural death.  And may also reach out to those who find it difficult to choose life because of difficult circumstances that they face.                      Father David

PRIESTS AT WORSHOPI and nearly all the priests of the diocese will be at our annual workshop in Alexandria from this afternoon (Sunday) through Wednesday afternoon.  In case of emergency, the phone number at Arrowwood Resort is (320)762-1124.  Please note that there is no Mass this Tuesday or Wednesday.       Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

The seriousness of sin is highlighted by Jesus’ words in today’s Gospel.  With analogies that make us wince, he says, “If your hand causes you to sin, cut if off,” “If your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out.”  We know that Jesus is using these words in a figurative sense, but He is stressing how critical it is to address the reality of sin in our lives.  Whatever the cause may be has to be addressed, and done so in a very serious way.  Otherwise, the sin may well become our master, creating a deep split between us and God, as well as between us and our fellow human beings.          Father David

A RESPONSE IS NEEDEDThose of you who subscribe to the St. Cloud Times paper may have noticed the article by George Will last Monday, Sept. 21, page 6A, titled “Francis’ fact-free pretense.”  It’s an article that needs a response from those of us who love and respect Pope Francis and our Catholic Church!           Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

To be a servant, and to be like a child…..these are the two challenges that Jesus gives us in today’s Gospel.  The words are beautiful, but certainly not easy to live out!  It takes a great deal of trust in the Lord to have the heart of a servant, and to be like a child who believes his or her needs will be met.  May God give us that gift of trust, and may we open our hearts to others in need, seeking to serve them with love and compassion.  Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Quite often in our Scripture readings, the people healed by Jesus stand for us in certain ways.  The man in today’s Gospel, who was deaf and had a speech impediment, can mirror us who at times do not hear the Lord’s voice or do not speak about Him to others.  Just as Jesus healed this man, He also desires to heal us of our spiritual disabilities.  We do need to come to Him for that healing.  And at times—as in this Gospel—we may need friends who bring us to the Lord so that we can receive what we need from Him.

HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN – The Pope was visiting the United States and decided he wanted to drive the car he was riding in.  The chauffeur climbed into the back, and off they went down the road.  The car raced along at high speed, drawing the attention of a state trooper, who stopped the car.  The trooper took one look at the driver and rushed back to speak with his dispatcher on the radio.  “I just stopped a very important person,” the trooper replied.  “Who is it?” the dispatcher.  “I don’t know,” the trooper said, “but he must be very important, because the Pope is driving him.”

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – Sometimes God doesn’t give you what you think you eant, but because you don’t deserve it, but because you deserve better.  (Interesting?)

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today’s Gospel brings us the final scene in a lengthy discussion between Jesus and His followers.  He has taught them that He is the “true bread that comes from heaven,” and that His Body and Blood is being offered to them for their nourishment.  The reaction of many of them: “This saying is hard; who can accept it?”  And they decide to follow Him no longer.  We too struggle to believe such a radical teaching.  Yet, we with Peter can say to Him, “Master, to whom shall we go?  You have the words of eternal life.”  May we continue to follow the Lord and trust that what He speaks to us is true.                    Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

In these last weeks we’ve seen a deepening dialogue between Jesus and His listeners, centered on Jesus’ words about Himself.  When He provided food for the hungry crowd, everyone was willing to listen and seek Him out.  As He begins to speak about Himself as the “bread of life”, and about giving His “flesh” for the life of the world, things start to change.  The people question and murmur, and soon we will see a large departure among the crowd.  All this challenges us as well.  It’s not easy to truly believe that Jesus gives us His Body and Blood as our food and drink.  And yet, these are the words He asks us to believe in.  May we have open hearts in accepting this beautiful, yet challenging teaching about Himself.      Father David

ADORATION AT ST. JOHN’SOn Tuesday, from 4:30 pm until 10:00, we will have Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament at St. John’s, except for the time of Mass from 7:00 to 7:30.  There is a sign-up sheet in the entry, and we deeply appreciate those who are able to take an hour to ensure that someone will always be present during these hours.

SPECIAL THANK YOU FOR BAPTISM FONT DONATIONWe thank the family of (deceased) Urban and Viola Gruber for their generous donation of the new, beautiful Baptism Font at St. John’s.  And these are their words to express what this means to them: “As members of the St. John’s Parish for many years, the family of Urban and Viola Gruber honored their parents’ wishes and donated the Baptism Font.  They were there in spirit as Henry John Gruber was baptized on August 9, being the first to be baptized using the font.  We hope many more children enter the faith using the new parish font.”

A Holy Hour can be summed up in a simple story:  A visitor to a Catholic parish noticed an old man just sitting in the back of the parish with his eyes on the tabernacle.  After some time, curiosity got the better of the visitor and he asked the old man, “What are you doing?”  The man replied, “I look at Him, and He looks at me.”  A perfectly good Holy Hour can be made simply by sitting in the presence of God.  “Could you not watch with me one hour?”

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – A man trying to understand the nature of God asked Him, “God, how long is a million years to you?” God answered, “A million years is like a minute.”  Then the man asked, “God, how much is a million dollars to you?” And God answered, “A million dollars is like a penny.”  Finally, the man asked, “God, could You give me a penny?” And God said, “I’ve a Minute.”
