SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

“The kingdom of heaven” is the theme that Jesus speaks about in today’s Gospel.  He gives us three parables, each one showing how our growth in the Lord takes place gradually, like a plant growing in the field.  None of us will be forced to accept God’s loving rule in our lives.  But the invitation is always there.  May we be humble enough to say yes to the Lord, willing to entrust our lives and our future into His hands.                    Father David

A PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS – Dear Lord, We thank you for the lives and service of our men and women in the Armed Forces.  Strengthen them and give them guidance as they stand in harm’s way to protect our nation and way of life.  May they face each day of their service the same way Your Son Jesus did; with courage, dignity and faith.  And if it be Your will, when their work is through, bring them safely home.  Lord, please also bless the families of our troops.  Reward them generously, for their sacrifices are known only to You, while their loved ones are so far from home.  And may we never forget those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom and safety; those who have died in the service of our country.  May they rest in peace forever with You in Your kingdom. Amen

WASH DAY – Monday, Wash Day: Lord, help me wash away all my selfishness and vanity, so we may serve You with perfect humility through the week ahead.  Tuesday, Ironing Day: Dear Lord, help me iron out all the wrinkles of prejudice we have collected through the years, so we may see the beauty in others.  Wednesday, Mending Day: O God, help me mend my ways so we will not set a bad example for others.  Thursday, Cleaning Day: Lord Jesus, help me to dust out all the many faults we have been hiding in the secret corners of our hearts.  Friday, Shopping Day: O God, give me the grace to shop wisely so we may purchase eternal happiness for ourself and all others in need of love.  Saturday, Cooking Day: Help me, my Savior, to brew a big kettle of brotherly love and serve it with clean, sweetbread of human kindness.  Sunday, The Lord’s Day: O God, we have prepared our house for You.  Please come into our hearts so we may spend the day and the rest of our life in Your presence.  **Something to think about when you do your Wash Day Week!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Many, many people through the centuries have found comfort in Jesus’ words for today’s Gospel: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.”  Jesus invites us to bring our cares and struggles to Him, and He promises to give us rest from them.  How that “rest” may come to us can be a test of faith in itself.  It may not be immediate, it may not be in the way we expect or want, but it will come.  To have an open heart, and to accept the way in which Jesus ministers to us is truly an act of faith.  May each of us place or trust in Him.  And may we believe that He will bring us rest from our labors, in His own time and in His own way.   Father David

PRACTICE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE’S MASS LEADERSHIPNext Sunday, July 13th, we invite our young parishioners at Saint John’s to lead us in doing the Introduction, Readings, Petitions and Gift-bearing at the 10:45 am Mass.  We will have a practice for this on Friday, July 11th at 7:00 pm at the Church.  All young people are invited!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today we mark the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, two of the great pillars of the early Church.  Saint Peter, as we remember, was the leader of the twelve apostles, chosen by Jesus to be the “rock” on which the Church would be built.  Saint Paul, a convert from being a Pharisee, became the great missionary, traveling to numerous cities to establish early Christian communities.  Both died as martyrs, giving up their lives for the sake of Christ and His Gospel.  We ask their intercession for ourselves and our Church leaders, that we may remain faithful to the Lord at all times.                         Father David

SABBATICAL NOTESI will be sharing, from time to time, information concerning my planned sabbatical next year (June 1 – August 6).  A basic thing to note is that the Mass schedule should remain the same: both the weekend and weekday Mass times should stay as they are.  However, the monthly evening Adoration and Mass at Holy Cross is now a question mark for next June and July.  I will let you know about this as time goes on.            Father David

JULY’S “YOUNG PEOPLE’S” MASSWe plan on having our young people help lead us in celebrating the July 13th 10:45 am Mass at Lastrup.  A practice for this will take place Friday, July 11th, at 7:00 pm at Saint John’s.  Any “young person” (no age limit) is welcome to come!

MISSION COOP APPEALIf you were not able to contribute to this weekend’s Mission Coop Appeal, and would like to do so, please make out a check to Mission Office of Saint Cloud,” with a memo line note of “MCP.”  Any amount of help is greatly appreciated for those in mission lands who have so little to meet their basic needs.

RELIGIOUS LIBERTYLast week, at Bishop Kettler’s request, we prayed a prayer for our religious liberty, asking God to protect this fundamental right for all of us.  Regarding this, it’s good to recall some words from our retired Bishop Kinney, who wrote in the Visitor some time ago: “When we speak of ‘religious liberty’, we refer not only to freedom to worship in our sanctuaries and teach our doctrines to other Catholics.  From the days of our nation’s founders, religious liberty has also meant the freedom to live out the commitments of our faith in public life, making faith’s unique contribution of service, moral guidance and community to our fellow citizens.”

RETROUVAILLE: A PROGRAM FOR HURTING MARRIAGES -  Retrouvaille is a French word meaning rediscovery.  The Retrouvaille Program is a ministry offered to married couples experiencing a troubled marriage.  Its goal is to teach new communication skills and establish an ongoing support network for the couple.  This program is for all ages and backgrounds, any religious denomination, and for separated or divorced couples.  If you think you could benefit from this, call Central Minnesota Retrouvaille at (320) 255-5314.  You can also check with Craig and Connee Thorstad at (320) 808-0465.

PRAYER BEFORE MASS – You have given me your sacred Body to be the refreshment of my soul and body, and have set your Word as a lamp to my feet.  The Word of God is the light of my soul, and Your Sacrament is the bread of my life.  One might describe them as two tables, set on either side of the treasury of Holy Church.  The one is the table of the holy altar having on it the Body of Christ.  The other is the table that enshrines holy doctrine and the true faith that unerringly guides our steps.

PRAYER FOR THOSE IN SERVICE – OUR MEN AND WOMEN…..Oh God of Mercy, we beg You now to protect those who are in service for the country we love.  Bless them and take care of them.  If they are tired, give them strength.  If they are wounded and suffering, give them comfort.  If they are lonely, touch them with Your gentle hand and let them know that You are with them.  And if it be Your will that they should give up their lives for us, please grant them a good death and a home with You in Heaven.  Hasten the day when we can all enjoy the Blessings of Peace once more.  Amen.  Please thank our Service Men & Women whenever you meet them.

GOLF DURING CHURCH – The Pastor woke up Sunday morning and realizing it was an exceptionally beautiful and sunny early spring day, decided he just had to play golf.  So…he told the Associate Pastor that he was feeling sick and convinced him to have services for him that day.  As soon as the Associate Pastor left the room, the Pastor headed out of town to a golf course about 40 miles away.  This way he knew he wouldn’t accidentally meet anyone he knew from church.  Setting up on the 1st tee, he was alone.  After all, it was Sunday morning and everyone else was in church!  At about this time, Saint Peter leaned over to the Lord while looking down from Heaven and exclaimed, “You’re not going to let him get away with this, are you?”  The Lord sighed, and said, “No, I guess not.”  Just then he hit the ball and it shot straight towards the pin, dropping just short of it, rolled up and fell into the hole.  It was a 435 Yard Hole in One!  Saint Peter was astonished.  He looked at the Lord and asked, “Why did you let him do that?”  The Lord smiled and replied, “Who’s he going to tell?”

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

As our Easter Season continues, and we move toward the great feast of Pentecost, our Gospel readings speak more of the coming of the Holy Spirit.  Today Jesus tells His disciples about “another Advocate,” also called “the Spirit of truth,” that He will send to them.  We can imagine how mystified they must have felt when first hearing about this.  They were still trying to grapple with the truth of who Jesus is, that He is one with God the Father.  And now there’s this third being, also equal with the Father and Jesus.  Certainly enough to make their heads spin as they try to understand this new truth of who God is!  We too find it challenging to understand the Lord, which really is as it should be.  If we understood God completely, we would bring Him down to our own level.  As it is, the Lord will always be beyond our complete comprehension.  And that’s o.k.  Knowing that He is so much greater than we are assures us that He can give us the gift of eternal life, something we would be powerless to give to ourselves.     Father David

ANNUAL DIOCESAN APPEALThrough the Annual Diocesan Appeal in our Saint Cloud Diocese, many programs are funded which help Catholics and others throughout this area—and beyond—to find help, both in their faith and in their temporal needs.  As one note from the Chancery Office puts it: “The Annual Diocesan Appeal is an exercise in gratitude.  When we offer gifts of time, talent or treasure, we are simply thanking God for all that we have.  Your gift to the Diocesan Appeal is a symbol of your love for God and neighbor.  Please know your prayers and gifts have made a difference.  God bless you!”

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – Jesus had no servants, yet they called Him Master.  Had no degree, yet they called Him Teacher.  Had no medicine, yet they called Him Healer.  Had no army, yet Kings feared Him.  He won no military battles, yet He conquered the World.  He committed no crime, yet they Crucified Him.  He was buried in a tomb, yet He Lives Today!
