SHEPHERD’S  VOICE:

One of the beautiful parts about today’s Gospel is how the Lord brings us to Himself in a gradual way.  The Samaritan woman that Jesus encounters was probably not ready for a sudden, dramatic conversion to her Savior.  Rather, Jesus drew her, little by little, toward Himself and His message of eternal life.  Many of us also come to the Lord, not all at once in a remarkable decision, but bit by bit, slowly realizing who this Jesus is and eventually making the decision to turn our lives over to Him.  May we pray this Lent for a deepening of our conversion, and for a greater surrender of our lives into His will and His love.      Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

All of us have an inner hope, a deep longing, to someday be transformed from this limited, sometimes painful, earthly life into a glorious life that knows only joy and serenity with those we love.  Today’s Gospel gives us a glimpse of that life.  On the mountaintop Jesus is briefly transfigured before the eyes of His three closest disciples, Peter, James and John.  This was a unique, even stunning experience for these men.  Later, when they would watch with anguished hearts the passion and death of their beloved Master, they would recall the moment when Jesus showed them that death is not the end.  They would realize that even beyond His crucifixion there lies an assurance that life would be victorious, that the promise of God would be fulfilled: in Jesus’ life, in the life of His disciples, in the life of each of us who give our lives to the One whom we call Lord and Savior.     Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

The temptations that Jesus faced during His 40 days in the desert are similar in many ways to what we face in our lives.  The desire for material things, the desire for power or fame, and the desire to be independent of God…..all of these we can identify with, perhaps very closely at times.  What we are asked to do is to have the same basic desire that Jesus had: to do His Father’s will above anything else.  If we can make this the heart of all we do and say, we will come to know the truth of what Sacred Scripture says in the Psalms: “To do Your will is my delight, O Lord!”            Father David

MARCH IS FOODSHARE MONTH.  Did you know that the Pierz Area Food Shelf covers the whole eastern half of Morrison County, from Harding, Lastrup and Hillman, to Pierz, Buckman, Morrill and Ramey, and an average of 55 families visit the Pierz Area Food Shelf a month?  A box of cereal or crackers and cans of tuna are items that are always needed.  Pierz Area Food Shelf hours are: 9-11 AM and 5-7PM on Mondays or call 320-468-2187 for information.  The Pierz Area Food Shelf is located behind the Pierz Fire Hall.  Thank you for joining in the efforts to end hunger in our community.

MISSION AT SAINT JOSEPH’S PIERZ 6:45 MARCH 10, 11, & 12 – The Mission’s topic will be The Seven Deadly Sins and the Seven Lively Virtues.  Sometime if we find ourselves dealing with the same sins or temptations it is because we have not dug deep enough to the root sin.  Sometimes Lent can sneak past us so fast that we do not really open ourselves up to change because we have rushed it at the end.  This mission gives us a chance to prayerfully reflect and ask God to change us at the very beginning of Lent, which gives the rest of Lent for the Lord to continue to transform us into a closer image of what God wants us to be.  Michael Pekar will be the Mission facilitator.  Each night we will reflect upon, discuss and pray about 2-3 of the Vices and Virtues.  Via a DVD presentation, Father Barron will guide a reflection on these virtues and vices.  Following this there will be discussion and prayer in which we ask the Holy Spirit to help us reflect upon the condition of our hearts and to act to remove the vice by filling us up with the gifts and virtues we need.  The Mission will be at Saint Joseph’s and will be on March 10, 11, and 12 starting at 6:45 pm.  I will run approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes with an opportunity for individual confessions afterward.  Please pray for the success of the mission.  Success means people come and that everyone is open to the life-giving gifts of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit tremendously moves in our hearts.

Let Us Pray Daily Scripture for Lent – No group of words is spoken more often by more people in more places for more reasons than the prayer which our Lord taught His disciples.  “Hallowed Be Thy Name” (First Week of Lent):  Monday, John 17:6-11; Tuesday, Deuteronomy 6:4-12; Wednesday, Matthew 7:15-29; Thursday, Romans 10:8-17; Friday, 2 Corinthians 3:1-6; Saturday, Mark 16:14-20.  (Please make some time for Reading the Bible – the Word of God, Lent will have a deeper meaning for you).

A PRAYER FOR OUR CONFIRMATION STUDENTS – Heavenly Father, I am a child no longer.  So Dear Father, daily help my Faith grow stronger.  Help me to live for Christ in what I say and do.  Please lead me by Your Holy Spirit and make me more like You.  May others see You in me.  Thank You, Father!      Amen.  (P.S. SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today’s Gospel has a number of beautiful, powerful teachings of Jesus that can change the heart of anyone who is willing to listen and meditate on them.  And rather than trying to “explain” His teachings further, I simply place them before us, hoping that we will take these words to heart and let them change our lives.  1) “No one can serve two masters…..you cannot serve God and mammon.” 2) “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink.”  3) “Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your lifespan?”  4) “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides.”       Father David

WE WALK BY FAITH……The latest tests on my leg condition have not revealed anything significant.  The only added thing the doctor will do is prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication that hopefully will reduce the pain to some degree.  So, I’m not certain now what the future will hold.  Father Rolfes, at the Chancery Office, is encouraging me to have my condition checked out down at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.  We’ve had some of our priests, plus Bishop Kinney, receive very good results from treatments down there.  So, I do plan on looking into this, and continue to ask your prayers for my health.  Meanwhile, I do plan to have the weekend Masses now, plus weekday Masses as I am able, but there will be no Mass on Thursday, March 6th at Holy Cross Church.  Please see the next Bulletin note regarding this coming week.

ASH WEDNESDAY…..WE BEGIN THE SEASON OF LENTThis Wednesday marks the beginning of the sacred season of Lent, with Ash Wednesday Masses at 5:00 pm at Saint John’s and 8:00 pm at Holy Cross.  This begins our traditional 40 days of fasting, prayer and penance which prepare us to celebrate the Lord’s “Paschal Mystery” during Holy Week.  It’s a time to deepen our Catholic faith, striving to come closer to the Lord, and being willing to look at sin areas in our life.  Every Catholic is especially encouraged to receive the Sacrament of Penance sometime during these days.  This is a beautiful way—although often a difficult one—that can truly cleanse us within, helping us to once again know the joy of being restored to a full relationship of love and peace with Jesus in our lives.

ASH WEDNESDAY FAST AND ABSTINENCEA reminder that Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting for adult Catholics, ages 18-59, meaning that less than two full meals should be eaten.  And it’s also a day of abstinence, meaning no meat for those of age 14 and above, but also recommended for younger ages as well.  Also, a reminder that all Friday’s during Lent are days of no meat for those ages 14 and above.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS AND CONFESSIONSI plan to have an attachment to the Bulletin next week, listing times of Stations and Confessions.  I will be asking for some help with Stations, so if anyone would like to assist with these, please call me at 468-2111.  Thanks!                      Father David

COMMUNION MINISTERS, PLEASE NOTEFor the time being you will notice another person coming up with you at Communion time to the altar.  This person will be helping me with Communion by holding the ciborium while I distribute.  So, please come up as you are scheduled, even though you notice an extra person coming up at the same time.  Thanks!                                Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

The commandment that Jesus gives in today’s Gospel is one of the greatest challenges we have to face: “I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”  How many of us struggle to just not hate an “enemy”, trying to not seek revenge in some way, trying not to get even with that person in our thoughts?  And then to go that huge step further and actually love that someone who has made our life so miserable?  Perhaps this command, almost more than any other, shows us that only with God’s Spirit working within us can something like this be possible.  With just my own human strength, I’ll not get even close to loving someone that has caused a lot of pain in my life.  But with the Lord’s love and power of forgiveness within me, even this will be possible.                      Father David

STILL WAITING FOR………… - As of this writing (Wednesday), I still haven’t found out what’s causing my leg to have the pain it has.  Because of this, we again have another priest with us this weekend, and we thank Father Richard Leisen for helping us out during these days.  However, I will be scheduling 2 weekday Masses, Tuesday, 7:00 pm at Saint John’s and Thursday, 7:00 pm at Holy Cross.  Looking ahead to Ash Wednesday, March 5th, I am scheduling Masses for 5:00 pm that day at Saint John’s and 8:00 pm at Holy Cross.  I thank each of you for your prayers during these days, and I treasure those prayers and your concern for my health!    Fr. David

LOOKING AHEAD TO ASH WEDNESDAY AND LENTLent begins with Ash Wednesday, March 5th, as we once again enter the most sacred time of the year.  Masses that day will be at 5:00 pm at Saint John’s and 8:00 pm at Holy Cross.

CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES FOR HOLY CROSS AND SAINT JOHN’S – Holy Cross: Samantha Gross – Steven & Gwen; Crystal Kowalczyk – Shannon; Rebecca Schlegel – Jill & Robert; Daniel Tautges – Mike & Audrey; Peter Woitalla – Bernice; Anna Young – Randy & Delores.  Saint John’s: Kyle Becker – Lonna & Kurt; Kendra Fischer – John & Minnie; Kyle Meyer – Lisa & Todd; Kalven Schraut – Linda & Duane; Robert Skiba – Robert & Kim; Raychel Virnig – Dean & Lois.  Every day, Jesus invites you to come into His presence and have Communion with Him. He wants to fill the deep needs in you.  He knows that His love is the only thing that will fully satisfy you. He wants you to know that real happiness and true meaning can be found in Him.  So let’s take up His invitation every day of our life.  Let’s end with something called the “Rough Road”…..Following Jesus isn’t always an easy or comfortable road.  Often it means great cost and sacrifice, with no earthly rewards or security.  Jesus didn’t have a place to call home.  You may find that following Christ costs you popularity, friendships, leisure time or treasured habits.  But while the costs of following Christ may be high, the value of being Christ’s disciple is an investment that lasts for eternity and yields incredible rewards.  God Bless Each one of You on your new venture in life and asking the Holy Spirit to come upon each one of you.  Congratulations!!!  You as Parents, must be very proud of your Student and I’d like to thank you for your time you spent with them.  God Bless You!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

At times it can seem that Jesus—and our Catholic faith—give us a lot of commandments, especially those that prohibit us from doing certain things.  What’s important in these lists, such as we have in today’s Gospel, is to see how Jesus emphasizes the inner reality of our being.  Before any sin is committed outwardly, there’s already a sin, or at least some kind of choice or decision, that takes place inside of us.  As Jesus teaches us, before the outward sin of adultery takes place, the person has already committed that sin in their heart.  May each of us be closely aware of what is taking place inside our hearts.  And may we—with God’s help—take the steps we need to in order to keep our lives holy and free from sin.              Father David

NOW WHAT CAN WE EXPECT? – I apologize for all the uncertainty with our weekday Mass schedule, because of my health issues.  Unfortunately, it’s not getting much better at this time.  The doctors are still trying to pinpoint what’s causing my leg pain, though they suspect it’s a nerve condition in my back.  I will be getting another test on that soon.  Meanwhile, I ask your patience and understanding, especially with Mass intentions that are not being offered because of no weekday Masses.  And I ask your patience as well for the future.  Hopefully, I will eventually get back to full-time ministry.  For those who might be wondering, I have to acknowledge that there is the possibility—hopefully a low possibility—that my ability to minister may be curtailed in the future.  If that happens, we’ll have to deal with it as it unfolds.  But again, I certainly hope that the medical people will be able to get me back to full health, and that I’ll be able to resume all my duties as before.  Meanwhile, we welcome Father Ernie Martello once again as he celebrates our Masses this weekend.    Father David

FIRST COMMUNION PARENT MEETINGParents who have children preparing for their First Holy Communion are reminded of the preparation meeting taking pace at Saint Joseph’s in Pierz this week.  This meeting takes place on Wednesday evening (19th) at 6:00 pm in the church basement of Saint Joseph’s.

ANNUAL APPPEALThe Annual Diocesan Appeal in our Saint Cloud area enables Catholics across 16 counties to further the mission and work of Jesus Christ.  By providing financial support for many programs and offices, the Appeal extends help and education to a great number of people, even for some who may not share our Catholic faith.  Your generosity is deeply appreciated, and may the Lord reward you for your act of charity toward others in need.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – Please spend some time with Jesus.  Let Him put His finger on just one trait He would like to work on with you.  Is it kindness or humility or patience.  Each is a blessing that can “come out” of us more if we ask the Lord for help.

A well-known verse from Scripture—in Jesus’ own words—is given to us from today’s Gospel: “You are the salt of the earth…..you are the light of the world.”  Those of us who believe in Jesus as our Lord and Savior realize the challenge He gives us.  He asks us to live our lives in such a way that people will see something different in us.  Our actions—perhaps more than our words—will show that we live on a different level than the culture around us.  We are led, not by our surroundings, but by an inner presence and conviction.  We know that Christ dwells within us, and we strive to do His will as fully as we can.  We pray that each of us will be faithful to His voice as He guides our steps in this earthly pilgrimage.                         Father David

ASKING YOUR PRAYERS FOR MY RETURN……..

I’m praying and hoping that I will be able to start celebrating Mass next week and for the weekend.  Those of you who come to weekday Mass, please note that I will have to see how I feel as those days come (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday), and, if necessary, would have calls made if I’m not able to celebrate Mass.  Right now the vertebrae surgery recovery seems to be going well.  The leg issue—apparently a lower back nerve situation rather than a leg sprain—still has to be taken care of, but hopefully will be o.k. by this week.                        Father David

ANNUAL DIOCESAN APPEALThe Annual Diocesan Appeal is a call to stewardship, and an opportunity to look beyond ourselves and support the greater Catholic community.  The Diocese of Saint Cloud is truly our Church, and Bishop Kettler is our pastor.  Your generosity supports many of our diocesan offices and programs.  An example of this is the Office of Worship.  Many homebound people are able to take part in the Mass because it is broadcast—through this office—across our diocese on local TV.

CATHOLIC MEN’S CONFERENCEOn Saturday, March 15, Saint John’s University will host the annual Catholic Men’s Conference, a great opportunity for men to grow in their commitment of faith.  The conference title is “Men of Integrity: in the New Evangelization.”  The day begins with registration at 8:00 am, followed by the keynote speaker at 9:30 am.  The Sacrament of Penance will be available, and the day ends with Mass at 4:00 pm.  Please register ahead of time; please call Father David at 468-2111 for a form.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord.  It’s recalling the day when Mary and Joseph took the child Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem to “present Him to the Lord.”  This ritual showed the faith of parents in dedicating their children—especially their firstborn—to God, realizing that their child was a gift from the Lord, and belonged to Him even more so than to the parents themselves.  This is a good time for all of us to remember that we belong to God first of all.  Whatever other groups, organizations or people there are that claim us as theirs, they and we need to realize always that God has first claim.  We belong to God from the moment of our conception, throughout this life, and especially through the endless days of eternity in His kingdom of joy and peace!

                                                                                                                                                                                                Father David

“FATHER, YOU SEEM TO BE ACCIDENT-PRONE…….!”  - These may well be your thoughts as I now share with you that over the weekend I somehow managed to sprain a ligament in my leg, resulting in some hobbling around and in the need to nurse this latest thing back to health over the next days.  Apparently, I do seem subject to this thing, probably from my fall through the ice 2-3 years ago, plus many years of jogging.  Walking fast on the basement cement floor here in the rectory last Sunday for about 40 minutes—with a log of turns—seemed to be the immediate cause of my sprain, as the doctor concluded.  So…..some adjustment in my return to full ministry.  There will again be no weekday Masses this week in either parish, plus I plan to have another priest take our Masses next weekend, February 8th and 9th.  Hopefully, by the following weekdays I will be having Mass, and will be able to take the weekend Masses in both parishes February 15th and 16th.  I know…..I need to watch things more closely and be more careful!  I appreciate your patience as I adjust to my own increased klutziness and aging!           P.S. (Someone told Father David he should be shut up in a cage, what do you think?)                          Father David

FROM GRACE’S CORNER:                             EMAIL: [email protected]                           PHONE NUMBER: 277-3832

We need to start the New Year of 2014 with A Prayer For Our Troops, who are so bravely fighting for the Freedom of our Country, thank the Lord for them.  Here we go with the Prayer For Our Troops – Dear Lord, We thank you for the lives and service of our men and women in the Armed Forces.  Strengthen them and give them guidance as they stand in harm’s way to protect our nation and way of life.  May they face each day of their service the same way Your Son Jesus did; with courage, dignity and faith.  And if it be Your will, when their work is through, bring them safely home.  Lord, please also bless the families of our troops.  Reward them generously, for their sacrifices are known only to You, while their loved ones are so far from home.  And may we never forget those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom and safety; those who have died in the service of our country.  May they rest in peace forever with You in Your kingdom.  Amen

A little Humor for Father Jerry and guess what Father Jerry it’s about Priests, so please enjoy it.  There were a bunch of Priests reciting Vespers together: Franciscans, Dominicans, Jesuits, and a Parish Priest.  All of a sudden the lights went out.  The Franciscans burst into s song praising God for the darkness.  The Dominicans began debating about the theology of darkness.  The Jesuits began to argue about whether they were still bound by church laws to recite Vespers.  The Parish Priest went and changed the light bulb.  *Knowing you, Father Jerry, you would of done the same thing!  P.S. Thanks Father Jerry for helping us out!

LITTLE HUMOR – Just before Easter, I bought a box of Girl Scout cookies from one of my first-grade Sunday school students.  But I mentioned I couldn’t eat them yet because I’d given up sweets for Lent (which is just around the corner for us).  The next Sunday, her mom walked up to me before class and noted (with a big smile) that she’d heard I couldn’t eat cookies because I’d given them up for the dusty stuff you find in the bottom of your pocket (Lent – Lint, got it).  Guess what the lesson for that Sunday was!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – Someone gave me a Smile today; I tried my best to give it away to everyone I chanced to meet as I was going down the street.  But everyone that I could see would give my Smile right back to me.  When I got home, besides one Smile, I had enough to reach a mile.  (P.S. This is my way of looking at Life and being able to do this with the help of Jesus in me).

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

The beginning of Jesus’ public ministry is given to us in today’s Gospel, with two fundamental points presented.  First, Jesus begins to preach a basic message: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”  Second, He calls His first disciples to become part of His ministry: Peter and Andrew, and then James and John.  These foundational happenings continue to form us today, even though we are many years removed from them.  For someone who is serious about following Christ, repentance will always be a basic part of their life.  And the call to follow Jesus is given to each of us.  May we, like those first disciples, respond with willingness and trust, giving our lives to the One who is true life itself.       Father David

NO WEEKDAY MASSES THIS WEEK……VISITING PRIEST FOR WEEKEND……NEED FOR TRANSPORTATIONBecause of my surgery, I’m not able to celebrate Mass until sometime in February.  So there will be no weekday Masses this week in either parish.  And then, Father Jerry Dalseth will cover both parishes next weekend.  We thank him for coming, and hopefully I will be able to start offering Mass the following week.  However: I need to mention that the doctor has asked me to not drive for at least a month, possible even longer.  I will be calling parishioners to give me rides to Harding when I have Mass there.  If you would like to help me with this, please call me at 468-2111.  And thanks so much for your prayers and help during these days!  The surgery went well, but it’s going to take some time to recover fully.  Fractured vertebrae take time to heal, especially when you’re “approaching older age!”

NATIONAL CATHOLIC SCHOOL WEEK - Please join us for National Catholic Schools Week, the 40th anniversary of this annual event.  We have a whole week of activities planned (see last week’s bulletin attachment/insert or MCR) to demonstrate what our students are accomplishing and to celebrate the community we've built to educate tomorrow’s citizens and church leaders.  This year’s National Catholic Schools Week theme is based on community: “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.”  The theme highlights the fact that not only are schools communities themselves, they are also part of many other communities, including families, parishes, cities and our country.  In addition, the theme focuses on key components of Catholic education: faith development, academic excellence and dedication to service.  These elements set Catholic schools apart from our educational options.  They are why families make sacrifices to provide a Catholic education to their children.

Kids Say Such Sweet Things – A mom was preparing pancakes for her sons, Kevin, 5 and Ryan, 3.  The boys began to argue over who would get the first pancake.  Their mother saw the opportunity for a moral lesson.  “If Jesus were sitting here, He would say, ‘Let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait.’  Kevin turned to his younger brother and said, ‘Ryan, you be Jesus!’”

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – To forgive is the highest, most beautiful form of Love.  In return you will receive untold Peace and Happiness.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Today’s Gospel is like an echo of last Sunday when we celebrated the Baptism of the Lord.  John the Baptist points out Jesus as the One that people have been expecting, and tells them that “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”  This reminds us of our own Baptism in which we received God’s Holy Spirit for the first time.  Later, in Confirmation, a deeper, more conscious reception of God’s Spirit takes place, partly because of a greater awareness of our young adults regarding their faith in Christ.  We pray that this Holy Spirit will truly come alive in us, leading us to give our lives to Jesus in faith, trust and love.                         Father David

SURGERY SCHEDULEDI will be needing surgery to repair the vertebrae fractures that happened with my fall last October.  The surgery is scheduled for Monday, January 20th in Saint Cloud, and will result in me being pretty much inactive for about two weeks.  Because of this there will not be any weekday Masses in either Parish January 21-23 and January 28-30.  We do have priests scheduled to come in for the weekends of January 25-26 (Father John Hawkins from Crosier in Onamia and February 1-2 (Father Jerry Dalseth).  Please welcome them, and I do ask your prayers for a successful surgery and recovery.              Father David

ROE V. WADE……41 YEARSAs we somberly recall the Supreme Court decision of January 22nd, 1973, which has resulted in the deaths of over 56 million unborn children, we continue to pray and work toward the day when legal protection will once again be given to all whose lives are vulnerable.  May each of us have a strong conviction of the humanity of the unborn, and may we be people of prayer while we work to change our culture’s attitude toward life

MARCH FOR LIFEPlease join us for the day to “Celebrate Life” on Wednesday, January 22nd.  A motor coach bus will leave Coborn’s in Little Falls at 7:30 am and then pick up in Pierz at Saint Joseph’s at 8:00 am.  We will be returning at approximately 4:00-4:30 pm.  Please bring along a bag lunch, warm clothes and a friend.  Sponsored by the Pierz KC’s.  To sign up for the bus ride, please contact Dale Beierman at 468-6225.

SINCEREST APOLOGIES – My sincerest apologies to Gary and Shari Schubert.  I misplaced part of their list of names for the Memory Tree, so they never got read on Christmas Eve.  They graciously donated the money anyway.  Please say a prayer for their names that I forgot.  Gordy Becker, Phil Tretter, Cathy Rowland, Leonard Schromel, Alfred and Mary Ann Schromel and Frank and Magdalene Schubert.  In looking through paperwork to see where I left names I realized I left out Leander Thesing also, so I also owe an apology to Chad and Meghan Thesing, whom purchased that bulb.  So sorry everyone.            Teresa Thesing   The above mistakes change our totals so we had one more red bulb and five white ending up with a total of 204 bulbs for a profit on them of $2,305.00 and with the wreaths the final total is $2,552.50.  Thank You everyone.  I am really sorry for the mistakes.       Teresa

KIDS PRAYERS GONE AWRY(with a little twist) – A Sunday school class was studying the Ten Commandments.  They were ready to discuss the last one.  The teacher asked if anyone could tell her what it was.  A little girl raised her hand, stood tall, and quoted, “Thou shall not take the covers off the neighbor’s wife.”
