SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

A prominent figure during Advent is John the Baptist who appears in today’s Gospel.  John’s role is to point out to the people the One who is the Messiah, Jesus Himself.  John also calls the people to repentance, something that is very needed to prepare for the coming of Jesus.  That message is the same for us.  During Advent we are asked to prepare to receive Jesus anew, and to do this by recognizing our sins and being willing to turn from them.  The Sacrament of Penance is a needed part of these four weeks before Christmas.  Father David

RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS – Sunday, December 11th marks the annual special collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious.  Our generosity can help those many women and men who ministered for years with little, if any, compensation given to them.  They now depend on us to help them live in retirement with dignity and hope.  Your gift provides vital services for them with medications, nursing care and more.  Please be generous!  *Just a Note…Holy Cross Parishioners have envelopes in their packet of contribution envelopes to use and Saint John Nepomuk Parishioners will have one attached to the bulletin next weekend.

VOLUNTEERS – How many volunteers does it take to make a difference during the holiday season?  Just one – you!  During this holiday season consider driving an elderly neighbor to appointments, or help with snow removal, be a friendly visitor to a neighbor or nursing home resident, or be a guest reader at a local school.  If you’re looking to change your life, and make a difference in another’s, then we have a place for you.  HORIZON HEALTH RSVP & Faith in Action programs have a variety of volunteer opportunities to choose from all with attractive benefits, flexible hours, and immediate openings – training provided.  Make a joyous holiday season for others in your community, be a volunteer.  Give an hour.  Give a day.  Give a year.  Please contact Michele at 1-800-224-6451 or 468-6451 for more information.

PRO-LIFE INSERT – What does the Bible teach about abortion, a word it does not mention?  Two principal life-affirming Biblical teachings hold that (1) human life is different from other types of life because human beings are made in the very image of God; and (2) children are a blessing.

ADVENT

Each week the students will gather together for Advent Prayer.  K-1 students pray together daily placing Jesse Tree symbols on a tree.  2-6 grade students pray together weekly using the Advent Wreath.

The Season of Advent is a wonderful time to watch, prepare and be ready for the celebration of the Birth of Christ.  At Holy Trinity School we do so many things to ready ourselves and prepare the way.

*4-6 grade students sang Christmas carols December 1st during Saint Nick Night

*3-6th grade students participated in Reconciliation

*The “Giving Tree” have gift tags for the students to select gifts to purchase for families who would be without during Christmas.  You are invited to come and wrap gifts any time during the week.  Donations of wrapping paper would be appreciated.

FROM GRACE’S CORNER:                             Email: [email protected]                     Phone Number: 277-3832

A LITTLE CHUCKLE – PARKING SPACE…A Minister parked his car in a no-parking zone in a large city because he was short of time and couldn’t find a space with a meter.  Then he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: “I have circled the block 10 minutes.  If I don’t park here, I’ll miss my appointment.  Forgive Us Our Trespasses.”  When he returned, he found a citation from a police officer along with this note.  “I’ve circled this block for 10 years.  If I don’t give you a ticket, I’ll lose my job.  Lead Us Not Into Temptation.”

CONTINUING ON WITH THE OUR FATHER – EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE…I cannot say “On Earth as it is in Heaven” unless I am truly ready to give myself to God’s service here and now.  Am I a good steward?  Do I offer hope to the world, by sharing my material gifts with others?  Do I support my parish so the hope of Christ may be felt in my community and my world?  Do I deny myself luxuries so others might have necessities?  Do I give glory to God for what is done through me?  I cannot say “Give us this day our daily bread” without expending honest efforts for it or by ignoring the genuine needs of my brothers and sisters.  Do I offer hope to others by giving to the Church or social agencies so the hungry may be fed, and the naked clothed?  Am I willing to personally reach out to those in need?  Do I share my material gifts?  Am I thankful for the gifts God has given me?  (P.S. Something maybe to think about as we do our Sacrament of Penance for Advent in these next couple of weeks.)

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – Every night before bed, think of one thing you’re grateful for that you’ve never been grateful for before.  God has a way of turning things around for you.
