The “day of the Lord” is a Bible term for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.  We know it will happen someday, but God hasn’t revealed to us when that will be.  St. Paul says it will be like “a thief at night.”  Whether it’s the Second Coming or the day of our own death, may we be found faithful to the Lord when this call comes.            Fr. David

A THANKSGIVING PRAYER…..Even though we clutch our blanket and growl when the alarm rings each morning, thank you Lord, that we can hear.  There are many who are deaf.  Even though we keep our eyes tightly closed against the morning light as long as possible, thank you Lord, that we can see. There are many who are blind.  Even though we huddle in our bed and put off the effort of rising, thank you Lord, that we have the strength to rise.  There are many who are bedridden.  Even though the first hour of our day is hectic, when socks are lost, toast is burned, and tempers are short, thank you Lord, for our family.  There are many who are lonely.  Even though our breakfast table never looks like the picture in magazines and the menu is at times unbalanced, thank you Lord, for the food we have.  There are many who have no jobs.  Even though we grumble and bemoan our fate from day to day and wish our circumstances were not so modest, thank you Lord, for the gift of life!!!           HAVE A VERY HAPPY THANKSGIVING DAY AND GOD BLESS EACH ONE OF YOU!!!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

The virtue of wisdom is often praised in the Bible.  Today’s First Reading and Gospel both speak of this quality, reminding us how desirable it is to attain.  What is always needed is the realization that God’s wisdom may be very different from the world’s “wisdom.”  May the Lord enable us to distinguish between the two.                     Fr. David

Fr. David

PRESIDENT HARRY S. TRUMAN ONCE SAID, “Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid.  They have earned our undying gratitude.  America will never forget their sacrifices.”  To all of you who have served our country in the military (like my husband, Joe), I hope you observed the holiday with great pride.  Happy Veteran’s Day!

VETERAN’S DAY – SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11 – Thank you to all who served our country.  The sacrifices you made have given us the freedoms we enjoy today.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

It’s helpful to know that all the things God asks us to do can be summed up in His Great Commandment love God above all and love your neighbor as yourself.  Although this is put very simply, it certainly isn’t easy.  We pray for the grace we need to give this kind of love, perhaps especially to that “neighbor” whom we find it difficult to love and care for.                            Fr. David

SOLEMNITY OF ALL SAINTSWednesday, Nov. 1st, is the Solemnity of All Saints, a Holy Day of Obligation.  We thank God for the gift that the saints are to us, both by their example and with their intercession.  Please note the Mass times:  Tuesday, 8:00 pm at St. John’s; Wednesday 8:00 am at St. John’s and 8:00 pm at Holy Cross.

ALL SOUL’S DAY On November 2nd we pray for those souls still undergoing their cleansing in Purgatory.  And we truly believe that our prayers—like those of the saints for us—make a difference for them.  Mass that day will be in the evening, 8:00 pm at Holy Cross, preceded by Adoration at 7:00 pm.

Fr. David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

A well-known saying of Jesus appears in today’s Gospel:  “Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.”  While we do owe certain things (like taxes) to our government, we owe our very lives to God.  Ultimately, He is all we will have when this earthly journey is completed.  May we live in such a way that our lives reflect this truth. Fr. David

YESTERDAY, TODAY, TOMORROW – Yesterday I met a stranger…Today this stranger is my friend.  Had I not taken the time to say Hello, or return a smile, or shake a hand, or listen, I would not have known this person.  Yesterday would have turned into today and our chance meeting would be gone.  Yesterday I hugged someone very dear to me.  Today they, are gone….And tomorrow will not bring them back.  Wouldn’t it be nice if we all knew tomorrow we would be here?  But this is not to be so take the time TODAY to give a hug, a smile, an “I LOVE YOU.”  TAKE TIME TODAY, PLEASE!

DAILY PRAYER – Lord Jesus, you came into the world to save man from his own sin.  You defeated the temptations of the evil one in the garden in order for mankind to have eternal life.  By your power we ask that you cast away the evil that lingers to destroy the mission you have given us to do.  By saying your name, JESUS, we ask this.  Amen.

ONE SMILE – Someone gave me a smile today; I tried my best to give it away to everyone I chanced to meet as I was going down the street.  But everyone that I could see would give my smile right back to me.  When I got home, besides one smile, I had enough to reach a mile!
