SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Sometimes it can seem that God ignores our prayers or our pleas for help.  There’s always going to be some degree of mystery in how He answers prayer, in what way and in what time.  Our challenge is to be persistent like the woman in today’s Gospel, trusting that the Lord does answer prayer, even if it’s not in the way or during the time that we would want.                       Father David

FROM GRACE’S CORNER:                             EMAIL: [email protected]                           PHONE NUMBER:  277-3832

ISN’T IT STRANGE – Isn’t it strange how a 20 dollar bill seems like such a large amount when you donate it to Church, but such a small amount when you go shopping?  Isn’t it strange how 2 hours seem so long when you’re at Church, and how short they seem when you’re watching a good movie?  Isn’t it strange that you can’t find a word to say when you’re praying, but you have no trouble thinking what to talk about with a friend?  Isn’t it strange how difficult and boring it is to read one chapter of the Bible, but how easy it is to read 100 pages of a popular novel?  Isn’t it strange how everyone wants front-row-tickets to concerts or games, but they do whatever is possible to sit at the last row in Church?  Isn’t it strange how we need to know about an event for Church 2-3 weeks before the day so we can include it in our agenda, but we adjust it for other events in the last minute?

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – A little boy was listening to a long sermon in church.  Suddenly the red sanctuary lamp caught his eye.  Tugging his father’s sleeve, he said, “Daddy, when the light turns green, can we go?”

PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE PATRIOTIC ROSARY 2017 – Because our nation is so desperately in need of prayers, various Catholic groups are uniting to pray the rosary on Monday, September 11, 2017 at 12:45 pm at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz.  The Hearts of Faith, local Christian Women groups, Legion and Auxiliary, Knights of Columbus, and the students of Holy Trinity School will each lead a decade of the rosary.  There are 50 Hail Mary’s in the decades and 50 states, so we will be praying for 10 states with each decade.  We also will be praying for all of our government officials.  We are only a small voice, but for the future of this country we can gather together to pray to ask the Lord’s guidance of those who are in leadership of our nation.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Recognizing God’s presence is certainly easier at some times than others.  Jesus’ disciples, seeing Him walk on the water, couldn’t help but know that this was a unique manifestation of God.  Elijah, on the other hand, had to listen carefully to a tiny whispering sound before he knew that God was present with him.  The Lord comes to us in varied ways.  Often we need to listen closely, and then believe by faith that He is with us at that moment.            Father David

HOLY DAY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF MARY – On Tuesday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Holy Day of Obligation.  At the end of her life, Mary was taken—body and soul—into heaven to be with her Son.  The separation of body and soul that we experience at our death did not affect her.  God preserved her from this, part of her being chosen as the Mother of Jesus Christ.  Please note the Mass times:  Monday, 8:00 pm at Holy Cross, Tuesday, 8:45 am at Holy Cross and 8:00 pm at St. John’s.  Come and join us for the Rosary about ½ hour before these Masses begin.

CONGRATULATIONS!  - We congratulate Douglas Stich and Vicki Karls who were married at St. John’s on August 12th.  May God bless and guide you in your life together.

MARRIAGE BANNS:  III for Sam Zevnik and Brittney Schubert, Harding.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

When something—or someone—is precious to us, we take the time and energy that is needed to keep that person or thing at the heart of our lives.  Jesus challenges us to think of the kingdom of heaven in this way.  He calls it a “treasure” and a “pearl of great price”.  Only we can determine for ourselves if God’s presence and His will are that important to us.           Father David

FR. DAVID AWAYI plan to be in Bismarck, ND today through Thursday, visiting a priest friend from seminary days.  In case of emergency, please call (320)232-0346.  Please note there are no weekday Masses this week in either parish.                   Father David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

Jesus’ parable about the weeds and the wheat reminds us of the mixture that we encounter, both with other people and in our own lives.  As much as we wish otherwise, we have to admit that all people—including ourselves—are imperfect beings.  For this reason, we turn to God’s mercy, both for ourselves and for others.  We pray that the Lord cleanse us of our sins, making us ready for this eternal kingdom when we leave this world.                 Father David

EVERY TEN YEARS – The monks in the monastery are allowed to break their vow of silence to speak two words.  Ten years go by, and it’s one monk’s first chance.  He thinks long and hard before telling the head monk, “Food bad.”  Ten years later, it’s his turn to speak again.  This time he says, “Bed hard.”  A decade later, it’s the big day again.  The man gives the head monk a long stare and says, “I quit.”  “Well, I’m not surprised,” the head monk says.  “You’ve been complaining ever since you got here.”

PRAYER FOR OUR PARISHES……Oh God, you have made us the Church of your dear Son.  Make our Parishes a family of one heart and mind in love toward you.  Grant that our common life and work may be an example to all about us.  Guide our Pastor, Father David, and his assistants in their work.  Acknowledge the intercession of Holy Cross Church and St. John Nepomuk Church and keep us secure in your love.  Amen.

A HAPPY HOME – 1 cup good thoughts, 1 cup kind deeds, 1 cup consideration for others, 3 cups forgiveness, and 2 cups faults, well beaten.  Mix all above ingredients.  Add tears of joy, sorrow and sympathy for others.  Fold in 4 cups of prayer and faith to lighten other ingredients and raise the texture to great heights of Christian living.  After pouring all of this into your family, bake well with the heat of human kindness and serve with a Smile!
