YOUR CROSS – Whatever your cross, whatever your pain, there will always be sunshine after the rain.  Perhaps you may stumble, perhaps even fall, but God’s always there to help you through it all.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK……EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS – When we see the glory of the cross and the sacrifice Jesus made for us, we rejoice.  With grateful hearts we say, “Lord, I love you, have mercy on me.”  But then we lose sight of this gift of salvation.  Without even realizing it, we let the cross get buried underneath our many priorities and responsibilities.  “Jesus, I exalt Your cross.  I make it my foundation.  Lord, have mercy on me!”

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

When Jesus healed people, such as the leper in today’s Gospel, He often pointed them toward a deeper kind of healing as well.  We know that within us there are various things that are in need of God’s healing touch.  With Lent beginning this Wednesday, may we ask the Lord to show us those areas of sin that need to be confessed, so that we may experience His healing and peace. Fr. David

ASH WEDNESDAY…..BEGINNING OF LENTWednesday marks our entry into the sacred season of Lent, leading to the celebration of the Lord’s Paschal Mystery during Holy Week and Easter.  Please note the Mass times for Ash Wednesday: 5:00 pm at St. John’s and 8:00 pm at Holy Cross.  Also note the attachment on today’s Bulletin, listing times of Confessions, Stations and the Holy Week schedule.

BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEALNext weekend is the opportunity for all Catholics in our diocese to make a commitment to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal.  Please consider, with prayer, what the Lord may be asking of you.  Many of the offices and programs in the diocese rely a great deal on the Appeal.  May each of us be generous in what we will commit to this effort, And please note that each household should be receiving a letter this week regarding the Appeal.

David for a registration form, or call the Office of Marriage & Family at (320)252-4721.

LENT – Lent is around the corner, so maybe this is the time for life-changing resolutions…One is Prayer…Resolve this Lent to pray more.  Avoid telling yourself that there is no time for prayer.  Be inventive.  As you get ready for the day, in the shower, on your way to work, during lunch, on your way home, while preparing dinner – there are  always a few moments for prayer and the Second is Fasting – Resolve this Lent to fast.  Start your fasting with small things: no jam on your toast, no soft drink for lunch, no afternoon snack, no dessert with dinner.  Fasting has been called “the prayer of the body.”  When we consciously deny ourselves some small pleasure, we almost automatically become more attentive to things that really matter, like our relationship to God.  These are two life-changing resolutions we can work on before Lent really starts.  Think about it Lent is on Wednesday!  Maybe we could give this a trial test starting as of today before Lent is here on Wednesday (Valentine’s Day).  Thanks for trying!

Fr. David

FROM GRACE’S CORNER:                             EMAIL:  [email protected]                          PHONE NUMBER:  277-3832

SPECIAL THANKS to all of you from Holy Cross and St. John’s and Friends for all your phone calls, concerns of how I’m doing with the loss of my dear husband, Joe.  It is so great to have family, parishioners, friends and ones that knew Joe really good and told me how great of a gentlemen he was.  I know he was, and well-liked by so many people.  God Bless each one of you and thanks for your Prayers and Concerns!

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

At times probably all of us feel like Job in today’s First Reading.  Job’s life has become miserable and hopeless, and he expresses his despair, saying, “I shall not see happiness again.”  At a time like this, it takes a deep faith to believe that God will bring light and peace once again.  May we turn to the Lord, and to each other, when the struggles of life seem to overwhelm us.            Fr. David

BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEALEach year Bishop Kettler asks us to prayerfully consider making a financial commitment to the St. Cloud Diocese through the Bishop’s Annual Appeal.  Next weekend, February 10-11 will be “Announcement Weekend,” with information being given.  A mailing will then go out to each household during the next days, leading up to “Commitment Weekend” February 17-18.  Please begin to ask the Lord what He wishes for your response.  Our contributions help fund many offices and programs in our diocese which reach out to a great number of people, both here and beyond.

DIOCESAN  FUTURE PLANNINGThe St. Cloud Diocese has begun an intensive time of planning for a future with fewer priests.  If you have a basic, “statement of hope” for your parish that you would like the diocese to consider, please contact a Parish Council member or call Fr. David.

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

The word “authority” often brings up negative images and feelings.  Today’s Gospel describes Jesus as teaching “with authority.”  We pray that this truth will be a positive reality in our lives, that we may realize His divine knowledge as the source of all truth.  Jesus is God, the One who is able to reveal to us the truth of our lives and of the gift of salvation.           Fr. David

SHEPHERD’S VOICE:

There is a key question that Jesus asks the first two disciples who become His followers: “What are you looking for?”  This question goes before us in this earthly journey.  We are asked to believe that only in a personal, trusting relationship with Jesus Christ will we truly find what our hearts and minds are looking for.                    Fr. David

FR. DAVID ON KOINONIA NEXT WEEKENDI will be at the TEC Center in Belle Prairie next weekend (Jan. 19-21) for a Koinonia retreat.  Fr.Laurn Virnig will be having Confessions and Mass at the usual times in both parishes.  In case of emergency, the number at the TEC Center is 632-1675.  We are always looking for more candidates interested in making a weekend.  There are already a couple of our parishioners on the team for next weekend.  Please call me at 468-2111 if you’d like to join with others in a renewal of our Catholic faith.

A LETTER FROM AN UNBORN BABY:   Dear Christian, I was very much looking forward to my life in this world.  I wanted to have dolls, ride a bike, go to the circus, and see the zoo.  I looked forward to celebrating Christmas and receiving Jesus in Holy Communion.  I’m very sad I never got to do any of these things.  My parents did not let me be born.  But I just don’t understand one thing – why didn’t any of you help me I wish you had.  Nobody heard my crying voice.     (*Something to think about with our Pro-Life Rally coming up on Monday, January 22nd at the State Capitol in St. Paul).

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK – Blessed are they who have the gift of making friends for it is one of God’s best gifts!!!
